The Grind for Combat Rank...

is really turning me off from bothering with Combat. Your only choice is to take on harder and harder ships and then, even if you win, you get a percentage point or two. I get that the point is to make it a timely challenge last everyone become Elite, but still... it could take a casual like me a decade to get there.

I’ve clocked 25% of deadly this weekend, and I’m a philthy casual.

Why does it need to be a grind ?
The grind is your choice. Does the badge at the end make you the best ?

Went there in the beta hoping to see the new Incursion stuff. No silly scouts at all in the system. Made me trudge out to the Pleaides, where I was seeing NHSS Threat Level 9s. New USS change... they can spawn 400,000ls out. I hope that won't be the case for bubble systems they're infesting.

Does that mean I get to have some Ice cream too??

Send it via the interwebtubes. Hehehehe

I know the perfect icy place to do some canyon scream... er I mean racing. It's a one way trip though. ;)

I have always thought that not only should your combat rank increase proportionally to the combat rank of the NPCs, but also the ship you are flying. For example, if you are in your fully engineered Cutter and kill an NPC Elite Cutter, you get an increase of 0.2%. But if you are in a Courier and kill the same NPC Elite Cutter, you should be rewarded more, say an increase of 0.8% or even 1%. Give the players the option of taking small or even medium ships where still will come to play and reward them accordingly.

Reward for skill?

blasphemy!

Commander HazelrahFiver,

I may have an Elite Combat rank, however, I just looked at my CQC stats...

roughly 5.5 hours logged and 537 deaths

yes 537

that means .615 deaths per minute or at least one death every two minutes

In other words, ranks are relative.
Please do whatever makes you happiest.

Why should you care about getting Elite? It will come as it comes, you should be engaging in combat for the fun of it. Forget the rank grind and get to killin!
Competent ranking will unlock nearly everything in Engineering.

I did the fed rank grind first which brought me to Trade Elite rather quickly
Next I went to Sag A and back for the Explore Elite (started out as Pioneer). I had a lot of fun with that 2 week trip and don't count it as a grind.
Combat Elite took me the longest, but I didnt grind that either. Just hanging out in the weekly bounty hunting CGs, killing NPCs and getting murdered by griefers. Note: at 50% deadly I stopped using the SLF to stop the rank stealing.

1 year 45 days later -> triple elite.

Ooh, any chance you could divulge the name of the system? Is it far from the bubble (would chuckle if it was Sol lol)

I was Elite in exploration before I ever deliberately outfitted a weapon on any ship. It happened after coming back from a long expedition and cashing in about 300M CR in data, and was actually a surprise to me at the time.
Since then I've also been running missions, engineering and trading (ie just playing the game) without regard to ranks, and I'm Tycoon in trading, Dangerous in combat and have the rep with both powers to get the "big" ships (which I don't really care about flying right now). At no point did it feel like I was "grinding".

Just play the game. You'll get there.
