The Imperial Clipper

Yeah and make it medium, and then rename it as Imperial Krait MkII.

Or just get a Krait mkII and paint it white, which already has all the things you desire, and leave the clipper for those that appreciate it as is already , a blooming good ship in its own right.
That was my actual problem with it. When I was flying it I just kept wishing it was a Krait. So I sold it and went back to my Krait.

But it won't be as pretty. I think the Python/Krait could use some competition anyway. If not the Clipper, then some kind of medium Imp ship. Like the Imperial Explorer, when are we ever getting that?

I 'm sorry for necroposting. I got the Clipper some day ago. And I almost happy now! I'm not the combat pilot so I decided to make my new ship the explorer/bubble taxi. I lowered its mass to minimal using low sized power plant, thrusters and distributor. Now I fully satisfied with this build. Of course I do not like some disadvantages (weak vertical thrusters + huge hull mass, weak shields, large landing pad etc.) But I think I can live with it.

The Clipper is really extraordinarily fun to fly... too bad, it has such an awkward hardpoint placement, leading to a very limited choice of weapons, when used for combat... and where else would such a great maneuverability make more sense?

Luckily there's a ship, which feels very similar to the Clipper in terms of speed and maneuverability... in fact it feels even more nimble, thanks to stronger vertical and lateral thrusters. It also has the same hard points, but with a much, much better convergence...

So, if you love to fly the Clipper, but hate its hardpoint placement and thruster performance... try the Krait Phantom :)

The Clipper, the Orca and the Type-7 are the only large ships that use a size 5 FSD. I have no idea why they're large instead of medium. Orca and Type-7 do their specialized roles worse than the multipurpose Python, and the Clipper is a worse multipurpose.

FDev considered pad size as well as cost as variables to be balanced.

The Type 7 is cheap, which is good, but uses a large pad, which is bad. They considered that a balance. As the game stands, nobody cares about cost, so nobody understands why the Type 7 needs a large pad.

In the same way, I suspect they considered the sublight performance of the Clipper to be in balance with the large pad disadvantage.

Everyone compares everything to the Python. FDev considered the higher price a disadvantage which was balanced by its ability to use a medium pad. But here again, nobody cares about cost so it no longer seems balanced.

I hate the Clipper

  • Low shields
  • Low speed
  • Terrible noise, seriously, it's like a cat's deathrattle
  • Bad name, reminds me of toe-nail clippings
  • Large landing pads are a drag, in the way that it drags down your sanity by forgetting this medium-ship is considered large

Basically it's the Cutter's "special" step-son. Phantom does everything better as an explorer/miner in my opinion.

Low speed??? I love the clipper, despite it's very glaring flaws. It is in fact the only large ship I use. One thing it is not, however, is slow. It is tied with the Orca being the fastest large ship (and far more functional) and the only medium ship that can outrun it is a lightweight Mamba (by a whopping 1m/s). My "core miner" clipper with a full cargo bay is substantially faster than a stripped down FDL.
