The Krait Phantom has now replaced the Asp Explorer as general run-around

I always used to have a build of the Asp that had a big jump range but was also armed. It was my multi-purpose mission ship which was used for generally running around the bubble. However, the the new Krait is amazing, I've just managed to build one that:

1. Is fully armed with size 3 double shot frag cannons.
2. And yet can still jump 62 LY!!
3. With 300MJ of shielding and 500+ hull
4. 500 m/s speed
5. While carrying 100 cargo as well as an SRV, surface scanner, collectors, wake scanner, heat sinks and a size 5 fuel scoop.

It's definitely my new mission ship and it looks cooler than the Asp to boot :-D The only other ship that can jump 62LY while still having the firepower to kill a hostile Conda is the Conda, and that's not nippy enough to run missions.

Been thinking of buying one and making it a pirate raider. Something more fun than the python, you dig?

Tried one for a bit, and for me at least it suffers from not quite being a Python - that said it's a nice option to have. I did try a mining varient as well, but the Cobra 4 has won that spot hands down - again for me anyway.

I’m quite glad to be putting my Asp X in mothballs now that I have my Phantom.

I always thought of the Asp as being sort of like a Volkswagen sedan. Technically very good, but soulless and boring. The Phantom has so much more character inside and out, and with nearly the same range and better internals.

I actually think it has a better range, more internals mean you can afford to carry a size 5 guardian FSD booster.

Can you share the build?

The Phantom runs very cool 'A' rated (Mine sits at 14% in deep space) but not sure if stealth builds work any more. For a medium ship it is fairly nimble too :)

The only thing is, in order to have the equal/better jump range, you need to lightweight engineer some things in addition to the normal downgraded components trick.

Before I engineered more of the components, my Asp would get better jump range with the same G5 Engineered FSD than the Phantom, and the Asp is un-engineered completely (other than the FSD). That being said, that's without a Guardian FSD Booster in the mix.

My Asp jumps three or four LY less then my Phantom's 64 LY, but it's much faster. And very much hotter.
To get a Phantom to fly as fast as my Asp (550 m/s) its jump range would suffer massively. My Asp is so heavily engineered that reducing the speed and heat wouldn't increase my jump range all that much.
They're well balanced

I've never liked the Asp. Don't like how it looks, how it sounds, how it handles.. Bought one, engineered it, tried to like it for about an hour, sold it.

The Type-7 has replaced the Asp for me. I even like the cockpit better.

That's for focused exploration, BTW. Not sure what qualifies as "general run-around".

Well damn , i mustve missed the "boat" on this one , i had no idea the phantom jump range wasbon par or better than the aspX .. have to look into building a miner varient instead of the python , the python is great but the speed and jump range is a bit low for my tastes.

I always thought the Asp looked like a B2 Bomber and sounded like a Cessna with muted engines. I used it lots, but never really liked it either.

The Phantom sounds interesting as an Asp replacement, but never considered it as my Python replacement. Ill check it out more in depth.

590 m/s, very low boost energy comsumption and useful hardpoint convergence make it a strong competitor for the Clipper as a pirate ship. Unlike the Python, nobody is going to outrun it.

According to Coriolis, with D rated Cores, a 6C SG, and nothing else, it can only go 45ly max.

If you are going for jump range you can still perma boost over 500 with 4a dirty drives off of a 4a PD and have class 3 or 4 shields with a 4a or 5a PP depending on if you have a guardian FSD booster. This will get you in the ~65ly range (with Guardian FSD, ~55 w/0).

Yeah that's better but my DBX does about the same.

The Phantom indeed seems like a amazing pirate ship. Large enough to fill in everything you need for this and then some but still nimble (for its size) and fast. Well built, nothings gonna escape unless you let it.
