The Last Starship

This project looks like The Expanse meets Rimworld (or Prison Architect). Focus is less on "colony sim" and more on "space combat, cargo and exploration" but still has a lot of "base / ship building" features.

This is still in (quite solid) alpha.

Here's the latest dev update:

Really looks awesome. That space combat looks very appropriately brutal. I'll certainly spend a lot of time on this...

There are a few of these games knocking around. I have Space Haven, it's completely underwhelming.
Lacks a bit of punch, doesn't it? Rimworld adds its spice with the procedural events. It is not perfect, but keeps it from being a simple builder game. FTL had tight schedule - every step took you one step closer to the end. Space Haven lacks any of this atm.
There is many games that try this. I'm looking for a rogue-ish space game for a while now, but haven found my perfect fit yet. It's either build your spaceship through combatting waves of enemies or linear chains of events with events in between. I'd love Rimworld - but in Space.

The devs behind The Last Starship are the same behind Prison Architect, which itself heavily influenced Rimworld - seeing where they come from I have a good confidence in them delivering something on par with those. Also it seems like space navigation is FTL-like, without the time pressure...

Rimworld in Space - that's what this game is shaping up to be and why I posted it :) Spent a too many hundred hours on Rimworld myself... The devs know that they're doing (as shown in the dev vlogs) and are moving at a surprisingly good pace given how small the team is. Fingers crossed they dont mess that one up !

Introversion are kind of the blueprint for indie to me. And every game they made was worth to have a look at: innovative, intersting, fun.
I followed through Prison Architect EA and they were also entertainers in their progress shows.
