The latest Odyssey Video and DTEA

I imagine most people who don't like a game don't spend hours every day going on about how much they dislike it on the game's fansite. They just find another game that's more fun.
I did and I'm only here because I CTD'd from MS Flight Sim. :)

Joke aside, I became one of those who only get info from OAs videos, and to be honest I did't even bother to fully watch the alpha footage. I rarely play FPS games, and when I do it is story driven. So basically my favorite spaceship game got just a huge does of gameplay I'm not interested in.
Having said that, I quit because of the ridiculous mining economy and unfun, timesink exploration minigames.

Everyone is going crazy about the video, lots of negative feedback. So, I might as well give my opinion too.
I thought that the CM's made the point, rather clearly, that this was a pre alpha build. An earlier version of Odyssey, separate from the build they are going to drop on 29 March. I'm confident that the Alpha will be vastly more polished and finished than what we saw.
It fulfilled its purpose of giving us a feel for a bit of the gameplay, at the same time I can understand that they would not allow the CM'S to play with the build that is due to go Alpha, while the devs are putting on the final touches.
It makes sense that they would be allowed to use an older, but functional backup copy though.
As for gameplay, the mission shown is merely a variation of the mission types we have now, as such, you never have to do missions like this if you don't want to. 99% of the time you could probably avoid combat altogether if you wanted to, focusing more on the other gameloops depending on your playstyle.
Odyssey is not a FPS, it's just adding the ability to walk around and to visit light atmosphere planets. It's goal, I'm sure, is to add a layer of depth and immersion to the galaxy we already play in.

The thing is that other gameloops have been neglected to bolt-on this FPS gameplay that has nothing to do with the spaceship gameplay I loved so much, so even if they fix the broken economy in the game (unlikely) and the garbage exploration mechanics (even more unlikely), what should make me come back to the game. Tenuous atmospheres?

Ok, I have let it '"Think in" (I think) ... So, some of your friends haven't played since March 2016 .. Maybe they just don't like the game, I mean, it's not for everyone .. And I would say, as an uneducated guess, many of those friends (if they come back for Odyssey) will be gone after a few months as they don't seem to like the base game.
Well it was actually the longest time, it varies from 72, 16, 8 and so on, however only a few still plays the game, and that was my point.

OK not sure what you wrote means but, I can't see FD working on a new release if "Only a few" Are still playing .. There are clearly enough players playing for Odyessy to be viabile.

Oh good, I get all jittery and nervous without my daily DOOM fix.
Just for you then.

Betas and alphas tend to concentrate on netcode and balance passes as a rule. Even though we as players are a bit short of info still, pretty sure the knee-jerk feedback is pretty useful for devs, who get three weeks headstart on up front concerns.

That was the whole point i thought. There's been so much spam in the threads lately i wonder what the CM's are thinking about people wasting all day on the forums not talking about the game.

Feedback -> Update spreadsheet.
Cats -> what?

They would need a mighty big spreadsheet to keep up with the 'feedback' given here... How do they 'balance' what is 'reasonable' feedback?
To satisfy all sides of the ongoing 'debates' with their accompanying 'suggestions' there would need to several versions of the game running concurrently and a few more on the 'back burner' to accommodate the ever diverging views...

Just give everyone a personalised copy, job done! Or at least, it will be by the actual 34th century when they actually finish everyone’s versions of the vision!

I think you're making a lot of "black or white" assumptions, OP. For me: it bugs me how little info FDEV is giving about the upcoming expansion of the game. I also agree with you the footage released looks amazing. My problem is I'm not interested in the slightest bit in a FPS. No matter how cool it looked I'm not going to sneak into bases and start pew pewing. I am still excited about walking in bases/ starports but if that means getting into a firefight every time, I'll call that quits quite soon. I am very curious what else the expansion is going to offer. But what I've seen thus far I am totally disinterested. Does that immediately mean I hate the game now? That was a rethorical question. Because if I don't like the game anymore I won't play it.

Greetings,

It happens every time. Frontier releases something new added to the game and all heck breaks loose on the Forum mostly negative about something that they haven't even played yet. Probably why Frontier doesn't release much. [...]

Lol, I doubt that.

Down To Earth Astronomy is a fan support YouTube website who obviously likes the game and is into the math of how it all works. If you want to crunch shield numbers in a spreadsheet this is your guy. Frontier is lucky to have him.

Regards

Are you his PR team? 😝
