The Limit Theory Thread

Procedural Reality, founded by Joshua Parnell, expects to release its first game, 'Limit Theory,' this year.

To use the current Frontier downtime (over 8 hours now) something constructive research:

And a comment from Mr.Parnell in the forum about this:

Hard fight. Support this man!

Thanks for the links - I'd put Limit Theory on my back burner for ages now and just hoped Josh would eventually get back to it. Good to know there is stuff happening again.

Nice links those, thanks. I lurk about on the LT boards but somehow missed those ones. I'm still hopeful that LT will see the light of day this year. I think the overall premise is excellent and I would really love to see it released and be a success.

That's good news, thanks for posting.

I'd given up on LT, my parting hope being that Josh didn't 'work himself to death' ever again - so here's hoping LT does arrive, but much more than that, I hope JP stays well - and if that means no LT, then that's fine by me.

:D

I've just payed my bi-monthly trip to the LT forum and am pleased to see a certain Josh Parnell active there!

I'm not sure I'd expect delivery this year, but hurrah! I find it additionally reassuring that, by all reports, he is not accepting any more backing until he has a product to ship - whereupon it's sales-revenue.

So, is there any news on this front? I'd rather not revisit the forums, makes me sad seeing all those folks still trudging on, not abandoning hope. Though, I hope they stick with it as long as they see a light at the end of the tunnel.

I so much want to play this game, but am still of the opinion that Josh took on more than he can handle. Good school /= godlike abilities.

In a word, no. Josh reappeared a few months back promising to restart the project, but since then it's gone dark. I believe he is working, but as for the results ...

I don't know that he took on too much, the stuff he was releasing was frankly amazing for a solo developer, and really innovative, but I do think he had issues with focus and control. I got the feeling, around about dev video 15, that he was becoming obsessed with perfection and was constantly reinventing the game mechanics. I think in the end this was the problem - he started drowning in his own ideas and frenetic level of activity.

That makes a lot of sense. It is really hard to work on something like this alone. I wonder if he has ever considered finding a partner to bounce ideas off of and share the work load.

I think he'll be tinkering about with his snazzy interfaces for years to come! I envy his noodling and hope that, considering his health, he's indulged for as long as it takes.

For someone that went through a couple months mental breakdown he sounds remarkably together when he does an appearance to talk about LT. I have this concern though that as it was (in effect) working on LT that caused this event in his life, it may be a longer term problem for him in terms of game development. I hope for him this is not the case, like he can shrug off what happened, but i just have this terrible feeling he will always be struggling with this issue.

As a backer of LT i pretty much gave up on the idea of seeing it as a full working game (and i don't regret that i backed it, nor would i look to get my money back) and just wish Josh all the best in dealing with his new reality as someone with mental health issues.

One thing is for sure: Josh has bright future in gaming industry, he seems to be very talented young man. As for the LT, I am sorry to hear that he is (most likely) stuck with it; he might have bitten off more than he could chew.

I'm waiting in hope for LT. Such a shame, it really looked great and had some very interesting gameplay ideas. Will it ever see the light of day? I really hope so but I really have some doubts. I visit the forums now and then more to keep in touch with people than in any hopes of progress.

Pretty much my feelings too. The last significant updates I read (months back) were from Josh's girlfriend, saying that progress was good and Josh was in a 'good place' (my words, not a quote), but I don't really bother thinking about LT anymore. Whilst LT had some nice ideas, some of them seemed quite introspective, e.g. the endlessly modifyable user interface - nice to have maybe, but a smallish side issue to my mind.

This can be a continual problem for some folks with mental health problems. I suffered two breakdowns from heavy stress from two different jobs, with each breakdown happening within 11-years of each other. One's life can be effected indefinitely with minor or major health issues once something like this hits the nervous system. From my experience my nervous system has never really fully recovered properly. Medication and therapy can help when it happens, but it really requires a major lifestyle change to stop it reoccurring. Even today, from time-to-time I can suffer from anxiety attacks when some forms of stress comes into my life. Josh has my heartfelt sympathies. I hope he keeps himself well and can bring his game to fruition.

Thanks for sharing Robbie :) And i wish Josh (and yourself off course!) the very best in relation to finding that better work/life balance and a more tranquil existence :) These are not small issues, and a growing problem in our growing ever more frantic lives. We all need to do more meditation and yoga! ;)

I remember being shown this game by a friend that followed its development closely and being amazed by this one man band doing sleek UI's and cool music for a very simple yet complex space game. Very sad if all this effort never sees the light of day. Probably all the attention made him feel the pressure just a bit too much, that's when the fun evaporates and it becomes harder and harder to just get out of bed and just do "stuff"...

If only he was able to allow some folks willing to collaborate and help him I think that would be very very good not only for the game but also for him at a personal level. More human interaction and less numbers...
