The Limpet Problem

What, exactly is "The Limpet Problem"?

That there is exactly one kind of generic limpet?

Or is this really a "Limpet Controller Problem"?

There certainly are a large number of them, aren't there? Collector, Prospector, Repair, Fuel-Transfer, Hatchbreaker, Recon, Decon, Research.... but let's really think a bit here.

How many of these do you actually need on one ship at any given time? Recon and Hatchbreaker pretty much cover Megaship interactions. Collectors and Prospectors cover mining.
Fuel Transfer and Repair cover search-and-rescue, Decon and Research cover thargoid messing about.

That's really not that many.

You honestly don't want to put one of these in your pocket, and you certainly don't want to fly one around.
Really, you don't. You might think you do, but you'll be disappointed with the results.

Indigo, hatchbreaker, recon and collector sum up megaship piracy.
Nobody with the module slots to spare does the canister fetching manually anymore.

We need limpet controller bays.

As I understand it there are USS' that are of no use to you unless you have the correct controller. You can pretty much ignore these if you didn't come prepared and yes, you can fly to the nearest station equip the right controller fly back to the USS do whatever it is you need to do then fly back to the station ditch the controller and again equip what you need to do whatever it was you were planning to do but in a game where pretty much everything already takes a lot of time...

Universal limpet controller please.

Oh, and can we give those limpets some therapy so they won't suicide every five seconds?

That's what ruins the fun for mining for me a bit. Seeing how all my freshly deployed collector limpets destroy themselves because they try to collect a chunk which clipped into an asteroid. We have this issue for years now and I don't envy the developer who is tasked with fixing this, but if they cannot be bothered at least they should disable collision detection for these things (with exception of ships maybe).

I only wrote this because I decided on a mad passenger mission a few thousand light years out after a long break, my first long range outing and didn't really plan ahead, so I have Collector limpets when Repair limpets would have made more sense (plus - what are fuel limpets, useful?), I also didn't think about the AMFU (or whatever it's called), and instead of more shielding I've got the anti-missile utility mount, heavy [redacted] weapons, an SLF and SRV and my jump range is a woeful 30LYs unladen (sexy Krait II).
I think I may also be suffering a touch of space madness! Nearly 300 jumps and halfway there but still mapping every system (it makes a nice break from honk / fuel / jump) and managed to snag my first space anomaly...
