The many "Best VR Games" articles that feature Elite Dangerous - reminding FDev of what they've achieved (and should continue)

There have been quite a few gaming news outlets including Elite in their "Best VR Games" lists for many years now:

Quoting my thoughts on the Odyssey VR news again for posterity, as I'd like to see VR support added to Odyssey post-launch asap:
Cheers for the answers, Tim.
"For launch" implies further information. Is VR support being developed for an Odyssey-update post-launch?
VR is a major feature for Elite - it's widely regarded as one of the best VR games available - so axing VR support from future expansions would be extremely unwise imo. VR would be unfortunately be added to the perceived ever-growing-pile of abandoned features.
As Horizons will still support VR, what happens when one wants to play in VR: logout of Odyssey then login to Horizons?
Considering the enormous goodwill and enthusiasm yesterday's announcement brought it'd be very disappointing to apply the handbrake. 2 steps forward, 1 step back etc. Killing the golden goose is counter productive.
If production is tight with the Elite devteam being fully utilised already, then this is a good reason as any for FDev top-brass to expand the devteam further.

Some potential good news obtained by UploadVR however:
In a follow up email we confirmed that VR support is still an open possibility sometime after launch, “with no defined date,” according to the company.
Perhaps VR isn't a complete write-off for Odyssey and it is just a devtime/staffing problem?

Yep there's similar glimmers of possible post-launch support in today's twitch stream.

I'd be wary of reading too much into it, it was some quick phrasing from Stephen while dealing with an angry mob & streaming the game ;). But it does seem to mirror what UploadVR have been told there:

:i was just saying on malics stream, i dont know if can even keep playing now knowing there will be no future vr support. what the heck am i working for?

So again, I mean, this is just the beginning right now. We've explained the reason why it won't be there on launch. Obviously especially with VR it's a very difficult... you have to get it really right, because people can get motion sickness and everything else, and all this other stuff. So it may not be there on launch. And we hope that it doesn't upset anybody, we do apologise.

Here's everything else they said regarding VR:

So for you guys asking about VR, we did put a couple of clarifications on the forums for you, but I'm more than happy to share it here as well. So VR is not going to be compatible with Odyssey at launch, but it will stay compatible with the base game and with Horizons. So that's all that we've got to share at the moment regarding VR. But anything that you've been saying, we've heard your feedback, and we've got it all collected. That's just really all we can say for now on that one.

Stephen said:
I can see that some people say that Malic is a bit upset, now we hope that any information that Malic is doing ok. I'm sure he'll be fine. We'll make sure that we reach out to him.

Tim said:
Yeah we'll have a chat with him

VR will still be compatible with the base game and Horizons.

:I understand that you cannot answer the more specific questions regarding Odyssey and VR right now but just to resister my voice to the issue, please liaise with the devs and get back to us asap. MANY of us are confused at best/hugely disappointed at worst riight now
:/

Tim said:
To answer your question myarch, we have of course seen all of the feedback, and that's why we wanted to make sure that we were sharing what we could, as soon as we could, regarding VR.

And it is something that of course we're in contact with the team all the time. So as soon as we're able to share more information and we have more to share with you about those kind of specifics then naturally that's what we're going to do.

@StuartGT YOu've excelled yourself with your research there sir! +1

ED was a pioneer with VR. It kills me that they are turning their back on it.

The mods have the ability to lock it still, but now there are replies, as far as I am aware, they cannot delete it, all we need to do is to keep posting links to it.

I'm still not completely clear, if I install odyssey, no more vr in my ship? Or only no vr in fps mode? Or if I want to keep vr enabled ship and srv, I should NOT get Odyssey and keep playing horizons?

If the act of installing odyssey disables vr for the main game of spaceships, I fear FD has made a grave error, and I don't even play in vr (I do have a rift, I just prefer elite on a monitor) that will materially affect sales of the expansion. Vr users will not buy it, and may quit altogether in disgust.

VR using LEP holders are going to be feeling very betrayed as they've already bought it.

Thanks for that. A bit more hopeful news in that Upload VR article reporting on an email exchange with FDEV. The limitation may also be obviously technical/performance related, not just staff or dev time.

This topic needs to not die. VR should be supported at launch.

If it's not possible, we need a DEFINITE answer on the plan for VR support. If we have to wait 6 months? FINE. 1 year? STILL FINE.

But going "no information as of yet" is simply unnaceptable. This isn't rocket science.

No ETA's, no promises. ;)

Nice of you to post this Stuart, but I won't be holding my breath for VR support going forward in this game. I really hope I'm wrong, I'm a VR player (and ED is the only game I play in VR, so I'm not really a fanatic) with zero interest in playing again on a flat screen. But I don't believe that VR players are a market that FD are truly interested in any more.

We don't know yet, all we know is that Odyssey will not support VR at launch but previous versions (Horizons, Vanilla) will continue with VR capability, if not support.

Yeh but like I say, what does that actually mean? If I install Odyssey, will I no longer be able to fly in VR at all? Or do the new Odyssey features not support VR? Naturally, I'm assuming the former, unfortunately, cos it makes more sense from a compatibility standpoint, but if so, wow.

I'd like to think that Odyssey would allow us to have the VR experience in the cockpit, but don't get your hopes up. I suspect that launching Odyssey means no VR at all.

So I expect I'll become a Horizons hobo until I get tired of it.

I'm assuming that if you launch the Odyssey version of the game then there's no VR (so any new planets will not be VR compatible) but if you launch the game through Horizons then you'll be able to play in VR as we do now.

Would be nice if they could make the flying and SRV'ing in Odyssey VR compatible, but it doesn't seem from what's being said (have a look at the upload.vr link in the OP) like it's going to happen.

No VR support at launch. Won't be purchasing. It kills me they aren't supporting VR right away. It also kills me they're going the space-legs route vs adding more ships, more things to do in ships, more star ports, different bases, addition SRVs, and just generally adding to what everyone loves about Elite Dangerous versus turning it into Star Citizen / No Mans Sky

+1 support for this thread from me. I am super new player and got ED after beating Alyx, friend told me it is amazing in VR. So it goes, really amazing game and since I started playing with VR I just can not imagine switching to flat screen (I did it couple of times for grinding mats but it just not immersive or as interesting).

Game dev myself, so I know sometimes strong voices do change people's minds on a team, so hopefully Frontier will reconsider.

all this sounds like damage control

I'm not a very vocal person in regards the the game mostly because I enjoy it so much but no VR support would kill the game for me and many others. If they want to grab that sweet sweet console money by making a FPS... Fine, I get it. But just make a new space shooty shooty game and call it "Space Shooty 3000" and keep developing the Elite story as it is.
