The Mining nerf was likely the worst implementation of a Balancing in Years...

They are not finished. They've said it's going to take a while to get the prices right, listen to feedback.
Then they will balance other parts of the game (although I think they said exploring is not on the agenda right now).
They said exploration comes after mining, combat and solo missions. See the quote above.

Agreed. I would also add the fact that you can escape an NPC merely flying above 300 odd m/s in any ship, despite the NPC flying something much faster.

Release those handbreaks and make Elite Dangerous Again!

The frustrating part is all the pieces are there, just in the wrong order. High sec should be safe but low profit, anarchy high demand and high profit, mining should be stealth aware / get ready for pirates / gold rush. Black markets should pay for illegals, BH should pay most where its needed, PP bonuses should offer handy bonuses to aid your play in exchange for service.

But instead everything likes in small boxes isolated from each other.

I'd temper that slightly differently.

High sec should be safe but low profit for lawful activities. Anarchy should be safe but low profit for criminal activities.
Meanwhile...
High sec should be dangerous and high profit for criminal activities. Anarchy should be dangerous but high profit for lawful activities.

Indeed. I'd love to smuggle several tons of narcotics into Sol if it meant I could get paid a lot of cash, knowing one wrong move means execution, or, I'd been sent to kill someone 'to send a message' knowing high sec and ATR will be on me very, very quickly.

Typical for this forum someone gets on their high horse and bleats about the first of several changes while ignoring the outstanding ones...

I admit to being biased as I don't mine unless I really have to, and prefer to just play for fun not an ever-increasing nember of credits... Each to their own, I suppose...

Do like the sub-discussion over risk though 🥳

Anyway, nothing was nerfed into the ground. Mining is probably still most profitable.

It is, but until the combat buff in the next weeks it's way slower to make mony... until a new min-max traderout is found out of course.
Being the most profitable activity is a questionable feat, if the "competition" is granting pittance at best.

I think the OP is implying that the mining nerf is no different to any previous mining one shot nerf and he doesn’t believe/trust FD when they say they will be buffing other stuff next.

Personally I say wait and see - the OP would be justified if this was the only change by Christmas, but not right now.

I guess it all depends on one's interpretation of "pittance"

I packed my bags and went off for a long term exploration expedition. I'll leave it to the devs to nerf everything to oblivion and the plan is to come back to "civilization" after the Odysse patch.
What I don't understand is why the nerf hammer had to ruin mining. I think I speak on behalf of the vast majority of players when I say: we play to have fun. I know having fun is purely subjective. For me a great part of the fun I'm having in this game is to try to get obscenely rich. In my imagination I want to be able to accidentally hear those guys from Lakon and the other company argue with each other in the corridors. I'll sooth the argument by saying: tell you what. I'll buy both of you. Here is 1 trillion each. Keep the change. But in the meantime I want to be a complete cheap uncle Scrooge: I scoop before I dock to save on my fuel bill, when I have limpets left I don't jettison them but sell them back, when doing cargo missions I always check the markets and buy my cargohold full to sell some more, I'm sticking to my Dolphin for passenger missions: stripped it to the bare minimum to be able to fly and jump as far as possible. No weapons, shields and a engine which barely is able to take off from planets (cheaper rebuy in case I get whacked). I equip every ship with a planet mapper in case I stumble over a Earth/ water etc for the extra cash.
And I don't see any problem with that. Yes I could buy all the ships in the game. So what? I'm having a good time racking in those credits and I'm not bothering anyone with that. So the mining nerfs ruined my fun for quit a bit.
Though I agree combat needs TLC in profit terms I don't get why some players are nagging about the mining profits. Everyone was able to get those profits. I'd say live and let live and let everybody having their idea of fun. Personally I think the combat in this game is lame and stupid. But that's my opinion. If the profits were the other way around I'd be arguing for buffing the mining but I'd leave combat alone. Now it seems the combattants whining over mining nerfs are saying; If I can't have fun, nobody can.

Anyway: when I'm done with work I'll go on mapping the rest of the galaxy. Rest assured: I got my mapping scanner with me and am picking the most expensive planets to map. (-; And I'll find a way after all the nerfs to go full Ferengi again when I return.

I'm already seeing tangible benefits by the changes this week... Making 200 million profit in an hour or so not mining (not doing much actually, but I digress) but trading previously 'low-margin' commodities - but admit to the benefit of utilising the cargo capacity of my FC to my benefit...

I think OP just ignores everything that doesn't fit his agenda.
It's 3 pages and so far he cautiously avoided to address the point about upcoming balancing changes to the other professions. The whole argument becomes pointless the moment we assume that FDEV aren't lying.

I have no salt to give. 🤷

Now pepper I seem to have aplenty!

I wouldn't put mining at the bottom of it (laser mining, maybe) - you still need to locate suitable mining locations, and core mining does require some flying and targetting ability.
If mining goes to the bottom, I wonder how many actually will even do it after that - meaning that the various features thought out by FDev will go to waste. I've always seen the payout as boredom pay.

Says who?
Anyway, nothing was nerfed into the ground. Mining is probably still most profitable.

Not anymore
It was.

Now the most profitable are Delivery missions involving the newly boosted metals
34 millions credits to deliver 180 of Gold... like 5-6 minutes job. \o/

Endless supply, demand does not matter, fixed prices, guaranteed profit.

anyone still mining?

Should slow the increase in numbers of new carriers some at least for a while. Far fewer new players will be aiming for a carrier from the get go.

Expect more abandoned FC's though, quite a few systems are going to resemble a carrier graveyard 🤷‍♂️
