The Moray Starboat comes to EDRPG

Josh 'Badger' Atack is a name well known in the Elite Dangerous community, as is the artwork that he creates. If you have a screensaver of Elite: Dangerous it is likely that it will either be an in game shot or a piece of artwork from Josh.

Here at Elite: Dangerous Role Playing Game we are extremely lucky to have been able to lure Josh back in to the galaxy he had so much fun in helping create several years ago. (In fact lure is completely inaccurate, as he was very excited to be asked to create more artwork for such an amazing and dynamic galaxy, but I wanted it to sound like we had done some work!)

Anyway... We have just started to discuss commissions and the first ship that sprung to mind as one I would love to see was the Moray Starboat. The evocative description in the Dark Wheel really sparked my imagination back when I was too young to shave:

To the right, running a parallel course...was an odd shaped ship, with powerful lights flickering on and off. It was catching the sun and Alex could see that it was slowly spinning about it's central axis. Fish like fins opened and closed. Across its sleek hull a rapid pattern of coloured lights

So whilst ED might not have the Moray (not yet anyway) we at EDRPG have set about designing one that will fit perfectly within the RPG but also not look out of place on a screen. It is only a sketch so far but this is a concept that Josh has come up with, very Catfish esque. Plenty more ships to come...

Longcobra is long.

Possibly because I designed the cobra mk iii for Elite dangerous, so I probably use similar visual cue's, also there is only so many ways you can redo that original shape! But I feel this early go at the Moray is sufficiently different.

My primary thinking was to keep it elite styled, and to keep it streamlined to be capable of supercavitation on waterworlds, so complex wing folds and no sharp edges facing direction of travel.

That is one beautiful looking ship ;-;

I'm not sure how realistic it is to ever expect the Moray Starboat in the computer game - since I'm not sure how realistic it is to expect submersible gameplay...

But damn, that really is a beautiful ship.

When FD development let us land on water worlds they should do the following:

- Add the Moray Starboat explorer ship
- Add a Jaques Costeau easter egg on some water world
- Add the corpse of Kevin Costner on another in a Catamaran wreck

I mean, what's submersible gameplay in the end ? Take a currently landable world, add a layer of extremely thick fog, so thick that's it's a liquid, add friction.

Done, the seafloor is the planet's surface. :D

Now for flora/fauna and friction, we might have to wait for at least atmospheric landings ;)

And quality ED sound design. Damn, I just got... feelings :D

Looking forward to EDRPG once the legal mudfight is over.

Yes, please. Can't wait for that! [praise]

Atmospheric Landings Confirmed
:D

Ouch, messy. :(

Given the Moray doesn't actually exist in ED, could this ship could have been over the "legal line"? =/

Deriving from ED might be one thing, bypassing ED and taking from original Elite may be something else? IANAL

It's some jealous ex dev partner of Mr Braben who wanted nothing more to do with Elite in the 80's and wanting some of today's pie.
