Newcomer / Intro The N00best N00b of all (right now)

Hey there, I just bought the game and haven't installed it yet (on Steam). I've been searching on these forums to learn the game. I have Satellite Internet and downloading the game would put me WAAAY over my download limit - but I download it at work (Monday) and move it to my home computer. I've been watching YouTube instructional vids. Bought a new T.Flight HOTAS X and supposed to get it Monday, it is not my fist stick by far - I've been PC gaming for 30 years and have had 3 models of sticks (not HOTAS) in the past including MS W/force feedback (but no good game supporting it). Looking forward to playing ED :D, have the commander "package." Would appreciate any advice you can give me. My system (short description is aging high-end custom gaming computer):

Intel Core i7-3930K
Asus Rampage IV Extreme
G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series 4x4Gb DDR3 1866
2x Sapphire Technology ATI Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition OC 2 GB Xfire
Crucial M4 SSD 256GB - OS
3x WD Black 500GB data and games JBOD
Corsair CMPSU-1000HX 1000-Watt Power Supply
Corsair H100 AiO cooler, AS5
2x Excalibur 120mm PWM CPU Fan p-p
Auzen X-Fi Bravura 7.1
Dell U2412m (24") IPS monitor 1920x1200, yes 1200 not 1080! More immersive IMO
Cooler Master HAF 932 case

Probably TMI for most ppl.

Among the hundreds of games I have played:
Skyrim, Morrowind, Oblivion, ESO, the Far Cry series, Fallout 3 & 4, Civilization V, the Company of Heroes series, Codename: Panzers and sequel, Deus Ex (all before 2015), the Splinter Cell series, Galactic Civilizations II, the Homeworld series before the latest this year, Sins of a Solar Empire, Supreme Commander II, Max Payne (I), Battlefield 1942 (& add-ons), Icewind Dale, Half-life & 2, the Quake series (except arena), Total Annihilation & CC, the DOOM series.

With my joysticks: F19 Stealth fighter, F119, F16 Falcon, and an old submarine game. Also tried others but no joy (pun intended).

BTW, Satellite Internet has horrid 1-2 SECOND lag! Unfortunately, I have no other viable choice where I live and I own the house. [sad] I can only hope this game will play properly on it.

Hello, welcome to the forums note the snake pit is on your starboard.

Have no idea what the lag will do to you, but you seem on the lower side for ram.

Good luck and enjoy.

If I understood you correctly, eg Satellite for your connection, I would strongly recommend avoiding Open play.

Lag/Latency is likely to get you killed frequently which can be both frustrating and (in game) expensive.

Your system specs are fine - I also have a home built gaming rig that's getting a bit long in the tooth (i5-3570K, 4GB GTX 970, 16GB RAM) and I can run the game on Ultra settings at 1080p and consistently get 60 fps with a few short dips into the mid to high 40's. I have also played a bunch of Fallout and Elder Scrolls, a fair amount of Civ, and just recently finished the main story in Witcher 3.

I echo the advice above about avoiding Open play - that much lag is going to be a serious problem.

Hello HalloweenWeed,

your system should run - basic requirements are a decent graphics card, 64 bit system and DX11. The lag however... I have a cable connection, and even then, I have some horrible rubberbanding occasionally. Solo mode shouldn't be affected by the lag too much (you may have some longer load screens a.k.a. hyperjumps), but any open or group action will suffer.

Another problem might be that the game requires frequent updates, which are usually run through the launcher. No idea if/how you could do those on a different machine than the one you're playing at. But if you run into problems, it can never hurt to check with frontier support, they're awesome.

Every single part of your system is better than mine, some parts much better. With everything at high I get 45-60FPS (locked at 60 due to refresh rate). Unfortunately, the lag will make it rather hard to connect with others I am afraid, netcode is fragile enough even with the best connections. Solo should be fine though, and if at some point in the future better options become available you can move your account from Solo to Open and back as often as you want. Downloading on a different computer and moving it may be tough, make sure to connect with Support if any issues arrive, they're pretty awesome.

Take pictures! :D
(or better, a video. I will forever regret that I didn't film my beginnings. I would be lmao, now, watching it when I'm gloomy)

Thnx guys, solo play has been working GREAT. I don't often have trouble connecting to the server, and sometimes (Sat. eve & Sun.) I feel that might be happening to everyone. One thing that might be diff: I probably have a much longer wait to access the starport menus than most, like when I open the missions interface it takes 25 sec., same for many other sub-interfaces in the starport menu - I figure that's my lag slowing it down. I've nearly maxxed my Sidewinder upgrades (often opt for B level), and have a nice wad to rebuy with. BTW, Cannons are awful, MUST rebuy lasers. I wonder about rail guns... My cmdr name: HW1. See you in game eventually.

In can you didn't know (yet) Cannons are Kinetic weapons so are more effective on inflicting hull damage rather than on shields.
Lasers are thermal so do more damage to shields.
Railguns are both but only available in the 'fixed' variety so your aim has to be very good. They also generate a lot of heat and need quite a lot of power - so not sure how they would fare on a Sidewinder.
You maybe able to buy some burgers at your next station stopover and have a BBQ party in your cockpit (after you've fired your railguns).

Like Mr. Boombastic said, different guns are good for different things. You'll have to experiment a lot before you find out what suits you the best.
My Sidey is fitted with a beam laser against shields and missiles to finish the bad guy. It works quite well.

I think you dont have to worry about the Star Port menu load times, especially the Mission Board and Shipyard. From where i am, internet speeds are crazy fast and it still takes about 20-30 seconds for the Mission Board to load and about 10-15 seconds for the Shipyard.

Also, B rated stuff are most of the time heavier than other ratings decreasing your speed/top speed/boost speed and jump range. So when you can, upgrade them to A. D-rated stuff are always the lightest.
