The name of your spaceship

Find a name for your spaceship will be easier or more difficult, than to have found your commander name and npc name ?

The name of the spaceship will certainly not unique. But it is our choice. And it will not be unpleasant to meet another spaceship with the same name.

But perhaps, you want that your spaceship has a unique name ?

Perhaps Frontier, will implement a system to ensure that the name of spaceship is unique ?

Moreover, we'll be able to naming our spaceship ?

Have you already find a name for your spaceship ?

You keep the secret up to the start of the game ?

What do you think of this?

I don't know, but I think that to have unique player names, Frontier have to put those names into the game, so for example, Commander Alien is programmed into the game so that if anyone else attempts to create a Commander Alien, then game then goes "Name Already Taken" ... I can't see how else the game would know.

To have Frontier also set up taken ship names just means more work for them, and I think they are at a limit already.

I have already chosen my ship name, and I'll keep quiet on it until the game is released.

I don't care if the ship's name is unique. I mean how many ships are called Enterprise? Then of course there is the Enterprise. Personally I prefer to try and create my own legend now.

As you can see mine will be called Imperial ship Ironfist....... i may change my mind before ED is released, but its a name ive used alot in other games and kind of fits into the Empire Faction(to me anyhow!)

As to being unique i dont know? the Commander names are the important ones, but i guess unique ship would be good.

I would hate to be locked in after playing the game and find ive found a better name due to the way i play(if that makes sense?)

Its no biggie though, Ironfist for now and go with the flow :)

edit @ Graham....http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Harvest_(Family_Guy) that maybe? :)

I thought you'd call yours the Lonesome pine...

Hmmm I would call mine 'Kow Shed' or ooh ooh 'Muck Spreader'

hehehe thats me settled now..

My job is working with ships and I have to say that names are repeated all the time. I also sail in my spare time and if i had a pound for every boat I have seen called Gin an Tonic I would be more than happy.

In most online games its the Char name that people use all the time. My name has been used on so many online games that people I have know since Everquest even in real life use it rather than my real name.

I met up with a group of friends from an online football sim, it was very wierd when you're asking about drinks.. people at the bar shouting to me, 'Kow!!! What you wanting'... and me shouting back, Rebel... pint of heavy...

Other names, Wee, Evil Sparticus (we called Evil), Savaloy, Calitibo (now carroty blow after over doing it)..

Now members of my family call me Kow, and my kids are calves.. its surreal but strangely ok...

Yeah Jeff Ryan has existed since.... 1996 or 1997 on Hemlock II MUSH. His most famous incarnation though was OtherSpace MUSH where I played him until 2007 when he died

Just a bit! :D

Although because its ED, the Empire is obviously different, so i may change avatar/text as i find out more about ED fiction as time goes by.

I do love the gothic imperial look of 40k though!

Edit, meant to say i use to love painting Games-workshop miniatures, more elves, wizards and dragons back then before 40k came along, even made drama pieces(Fantasy castle with miniatures, or small pieces with Dwarfs fighting dragons) had to learn all the painting techniques from scratch... ie drybrushing etc but lots of fun!

Liking your ships name to!

Totally agree there, I'd love to see this kinda stuff with Imperial ships in ED... A bit like Dune style I think!

Thanks! I stole it from a Raymond Feist book.

Yeah, back in the early 90's I used to wargame with Citadel miniatures. Dry brushing good for highlights in armour :D Good fun

Dune is a very good influence for style(ships uniforms and ranks!) gotta love big ships!

Yeah i think your ship is from The Shadow of a Dark Queen(not read it, but sounds good!) must have had a good impact on you, love it when a book does that.

Again as for imperial ships couldn't agree more(liking the ones you put up) but i think ED want Imperial ships more curvy looking.
Hey if we get to do modding/tools to change shapes of ships, we can go the other way! ;)
We need good commanders like this for the Cap ships to :D

Yeah they will be more curvy but I wonder if between the curves we might get this ornate castellations like on those pics once close in?

Sorry whoever started this thread, we've highjacked it a bit! But back on subject, naming a ship is very important I think!

There are several reasons for not having unique ship names, and reducing the potential workload for Frontier is only one. How many ships are you going to have in your Elite career? I'm not just talking about losing ships in combat, but are you really still going to flying around in your starter Sidewinder a year after release. There have also been heavy hints (especially on Lave Radio) that you will be able to own more than one ship at a time. So maybe you will still have your starter Sidewinder but also an Anaconda too.

As yet I'm undecided on a name, though Really? is a possibility;)

Multiple ships I can live with. It's the naming part that gets difficult. I have one name, that I will give my first ship and the ones following that will have to make do with whatever I come up with, when I acquire them. Hopefully not too many malts have been had, when the time comes to think of a name...

I think it'll still be cool if you're about to name your ship by the simple means of writing it on the exterior skin, not necessarily as an intrinsic part of the game engine. Once a ship is destroyed it has been wiped bar from the memory of the owner. If your ship has been sold, perhaps it would be cool to leave it on the skin in the ship yard for others to purchase with it still left on but with the option of renaming it. Might be surprised to see what you find though!
