The Name You Gave Your Ship...

I get a warm feeling thinking of my second account's vulture ....

My exploration CMDR is the more serious of the two accounts I regularly play, and his small fleet of ships have the more serious albeit eclectic names:

  • Arrhenius, an exploration Anaconda named in honour of a ship in a MegaTraveller campaign I played in my youth.
  • Rares Racer, a Sidewinder that won me a trading race competition in Mobius years ago that I can't bring myself to sell.
  • Maizuruyama Maru, an Asp Explorer refitted as a general purpose bubble runner. A legacy from a time when I was going to name all of my ships after mountains, but ultimately didn't.
  • Acornsoft's Legacy, a wireframe-skinned Cobra Mk III with white engine and weapon colours, because nostalgia.
My regular CMDR, with the same name as this forum account and so not nearly as serious, has most of his ships named after him according to their purpose. Hence...

  • Schitt Off A Shovel, a fast Diamondback Explorer for high speed bubble taxiing.
  • Heavy Schitt, a T9 bulk carrier.
  • Serious Schitt, a Python awaiting some heavy Engineering so it can live up to its name.
  • Schitt Happens, a FAS for bounty hunting and mission running.
  • Schitty Death, a Vulture that doesn't get much action since the FAS came along.
  • Annoying Little Schitt, an interdictor Sidewinder with Engineered enhanced thrusters.
...and in a break with tradition, for the sake of maintaining a terrible pun...

  • The Asp, Idistra. It's not the biggest in the world, but it does have a green paint job.

You need to add another ship that is purely for being exceptionally silly in and call it "Schitts and Giggles"

But do have a care about blaspheming the aspidistra. Something horrible will come down the chimney...

Sidewinder: The Edible Poet
Cobra Mk III: The Dancing Groigan
Python: Eat Violent Sitcoms
Anaconda: Solace of the Void
Viper Mk III: The Silver Bullet
Imperial Eagle: Hot Needle of Enquiry
Vulture: Empedocles
Fer-de-Lance: Remember Wadjet
Cobra Mk IV: M'as-tu-vu
Asp Explorer: The Boolean Lattice
Type 10 Defender: Harmony of the Spheres
Federal Dropship: The Tribalista
Federal Assault Ship: The Infamous Fazzle
Federal Gunship: The Tranquilizer
Hauler: Brushed Steel Prophet
Beluga Liner: Casa Beneficio
Orca: Almora

The names of the first three ships may ring a bell to those who have played the original ELITE and ArcElite.

Pics of the ships are here, their stories and more pics are on the site linked in my sig.

The Metro series of games & books, has gotten me quite interested in Russian history and culture. In particular, their weapons development.

When I was first starting out, I bought a Cobra to go on the Crab Nebula Expedition. I couldn't think of a name, and it's bad luck to take a ship out without a name, so a friend suggested I call him the Snakey McSnakeface. Ever since, my ships have always had that suffix.

Sidewinder - Siddy (original, I know)
Eagle - Smol McSnakeface
Eagle - Silly McSnakeface (dedicated trench runner build)
Cobra Mk III - Snakey McSnakeface
Asp Explorer - Slither McSnakeface
FDL - Crunchie McSnakeface
Orca - Sluggish McSnakeface (Was considering Sluggish McWhaleface for a time)
Type-9 - BFF McSnakeface (prize for guessing what BFF stands for)
Anaconda - Crunchie McSnakeface (because firing eight multicannons simultaneously approaches the limits of fun a Commander can have legally, in most systems.)

I'm also going to pick up a FGS which is going to have six multicannons and a railgun, which I'm going to call the Rocinante.

For bonus pick, a couple of my partner's ships that are my favourites, are the Anaconda called The Martian, and the iCutter called the Useless Lesbian.

My ships are named after the ships in Thunderbirds 2086, which was one of the first shows I can remember that excited me about space.

I remember thinking how old I would be when this all became 'real' in 2086!

I've also modified the ships to make them as close to the show as possible:

DBS -> Magpie (my favorite ship, used for rob and run)
DBX -> Mistral (the name for a wind. Used for traveling and sneaky missions)
Clipper -> Medianoche (it means Midnigh, I painted her black, used for rescues and transport)
Dolphin -> Banshee (did you hear the noise it makes?? Tourism )
Cobra -> Country Roads (for bouncy paths filled with pirates or sneak illegal stuff in stations)

But the best name I ever read for ship was "Ship Happens", I could not read the name of the commander to congratulate them later because I was laughing to tears.
