Watched F1 for years.. A hippy who likes F1 and snooker... go figure.
Anyway, I agree, a complete mess. Vettel in 3rd yet in his jeans before the session ended? Ridiculous.
As the sky crew were saying, all the focus is on the timer and not on the cars doing fast laps.
It was painful to watch and I don't think you'll find anyone who though it was fine.

Last half of the Q3 was quite funny. Maybe not what it was meant to be. Almost makes me want the old "only one lap" qualifying back.
Obvious improvements would be
a) combine all sessions
b) use old Q3 format
c) let drivers finish current lap before elimination
Point "a" would require tyres that don't degrade so fast, but maintain their speed throughout the session.
But all this doesn't matter if Mercedes dominates yet another season. In that case I'll spend my time better, like playing ED.

every 4 minutes eliminate last 2 on leaderboard
no pit stop, pulling into the pits or shopping/crashing on circuit drops you out at whatever the next elimination position is.

This would mean that in order to get pole you would need to stay out of the elimination zone fir the entire session.

As you have to be fuelled and tyred for the whole session your early lap times will be impaired preventing a one shot lap early on.

The pole winner is likely to have to do several "hot" laps thought the session as times increase.

Bernie's decided to drop it, mainly because it didn't achieve the desired objective of handicapping Hamilton and Rosberg.

Looks like that'll be the short term solution, but Ecclestone seems very keen to impose a system to penalise the most successful teams so we can expect something else sooner rather than later. It'll get a lot of stick from F1 fans I imagine, but it won't be the first time it's happened:

It'll likely be time penalties rather than extra weight (the cars would need to be redesigned to accommodate ballast weights, and F1 being what it is that would take a while to do).
I can't decide whether I like it yet (and I certainly have no love for Ecclestone), but if done properly it would certainly make F1 a bit less processional.
I'd like a weight penalty (i.e. the minimum driver+car finishing weight would be increased) linked to championship points, say 0.5kg a point, this would automatically help the slower teams "catch up".

After 40 years of research and at over £2 million a time; I would hope so. It did look very scary. Did all the wheels stay with the car this time? The C4 coverage was limited to say the least.
Lol, sorry, I just had to drop this this here, but seeing the title about qualifying F-1's, on a forum for a science fiction game, made me think about "engine qualification tests" for a completely different kind of "F-1"

Sand traps are definitely a double edged sword, on the one hand it was the trap that caused him to flip,which wouldn't have happened with a run off area and on the other hand,it was the digging in reverse impact back into the sand that took all the energy out of the crash and probably saved his life.
