General / Off-Topic The new F1 qualifying?

If Formula One had this ------>

F1 pilots should have an ejection seat, as in fighter jets

and engines, like this ----->

I'd definitely tune back in (even if qualifying was rubbish).

-----------

Surely by now we should be seeing alternative (hydrogen car) races? Co-opted with F1, as ultimate in class?
(F1 drivers, F1 chassis, H2 powerplant).

Although solar no good for transport,
an example of what a solar car F1 race might look like?
I'd watch. Go, go, go ....

The whole program, a bomb on Dougal's milk van, set to go off if his speed drops below 4 mph is total delight. (And those women were in the nip!)

The trailer ..

There was a Formula 1 race over the weekend?
No news items, no TV coverage that I noticed at least.
As I said, Bernie does not run F1 any more. Murdoch does and dictates who gets broadcast what and that is very limited. If you don't have Sky, you don't get anything. Channel4 was not allowed to do anything about the build up etc, until Saturday.

I'm an F1 nut, have been since the early 70's, My first hero was Jochen Rindt, then I was a fan of Jo Siffert, then Francois Cevert then Ronnie Peterson, then Elio de Angelis then Ayrton Senna and then Michael Schumacher. I've since stopped supporting individual drivers as it can be so depressing :(

I watched the race, actually I want all the sessions, FP1-2-3, Qually and Race and I record the races for my collection (which dates back to Sept 1988)

As for the new qually, I suspected it might be crap but boy I didn't expect it to be so crap, I mean over 4 mins at the end with no one running? what a shambles that was!
I stayed up all night for the race as I'm usually so fired up for the 1st race that I cannot sleep, it was mostly a good race, I'm so so very happy Alonso is okay, that was a horrible crash indeed. I honestly think if the car had one of the dumb "halo"'s on it might have been a different story and I doubt he'd get out so fast, also I think the gravel trap was a big help in the accident, yes it made him roll but it dissipated a lot of energy there, I believe a tarmac run-off wouldn't have scrubbed off anything like as much speed.

Shame about the red flag, that and Ferrari's decision not to change to mediums just handed Merc the race on a platter which tbh is the last team that need a gift.

I look forward to the next race and hope Ferrari can again put up a challenge, tbh even as a Brit, I'm very tired of Lewis cruising to easy wins.

That was a fantastic start from the Ferraris, but then, boom, engine gone. Not sure about the halos yet; although I feel they are a bit over the top and have not seen a lot of info on them, even the F1 website, is a bit sparse these days. No build up on C4, found about the basics of qually, 2 mins before it started.

Massive fan, for years; might have to find a friendly landlady;with Sky, to let me stay for the weekends, now and then.

I thought is was funny, he's in 6th, I think and whining, that nothings working right.

The recent Australian Grand Prix was marked by the failure of the new format of the qualifying session ... And all the pilots are worried about the future of the F1

Grand prix.jpg

They have reason to be worried about the future, especially now that Sky have acquired all rights to F1 from 2019 to 2024.
No live free-to-air coverage in the UK except for the British GP, the rest will be highlights. http://www.skysports.com/f1/news/12433/10215419/sky
:(

I just hope that RTL continue their free-to-air coverage as I can pick that up via a repurposed freesat dish, and together with R5Live coverage have a workable alternative to watch live races... otherwise I guess I'll stop watching - I can't stand highlights.

I don't thing that they realise just how much the Sky deal has killed the viewing figures.

Channel4 was not allowed to do anything about the build up etc, until Saturday.

Apart from running trailers for two weeks prior to qualifying and the programme on Thursday prior to qualy featuring DC and Guy Martin racing around Silverstone.

Channel 4's qualy programme was well done, except for the actual commentary itself because they retained the same team the Beeb had who are dreadful.

Back on Topic

Its been decided to retain the qualifying format from Australia for the next race despite and announcement prior to the race they would return to the old format.

Oh and from 2019 Sky has exclusive tv rights for F1 in the UK, this is a huge mistake (and this is from someone who watches Sky F1 - I get it FOC).

So... not happy with constantly shooting themselves in the foot, they now shoot themselves in the face. ughh.. they really are killing this sport step by step.

FIA allowing more in-season engine development, is the only way for the sport to have tight races again. That would come with a big price though - smaller teams being dropped further behind the order due to limited resources -.

Let's face it, in this hybrid era, the power unit determines 90% of how competitive a car is. Red Bull has the best chassis on the grid, but even if they were running Ferrari's latest spec unit, they still wouldn't be able to overthrow Mercedes.

Yay an F1 thread! \o/

I'm also very relieved they ditched that awful qualy format. What were they thinking?!
I really liked the driver's letter, I think a lot of fans are behind it, but will it fall on deaf ears at the top? I hope it gives them a wake-up call.

Totally agree with you! Monopolies are never a good thing, especially when Murdoch and Ecclestone are involved *shudder*

Really hoping that Ferrari pick up and take the fight to Merc - don't want another monopoly on the track as well!

Looking forward to Shanghai!
