Here's an idea that I kicked about on the EIC forums that a few people liked so I'm going to repeat it here. I think it can be very workable.

Instead of guilds let's call them 'clubs' - and players can join as many player created clubs as they like.

So for example I could be a member of the EIC club, the 8th Dragon club, elite dangerous Facebook community club, frontier forums club, SEA gamers club, elite craft beer appreciation club, elite redditors club etc... All at the same time!

The list of clubs I join is public to everyone who sees me in game. So I could meet another pilot and they could see all the clubs I am a member of. And if I see they are a member of the 'screw the EIC' club then I'll blap them.

Sound simple enough?

Yeah, there's no way at all to avoid that interaction in a multi modal, poorly implemented instancing experience, is there?

right... so your argument is if you do not like it go to solo then......

IF such content was introduced, and even more people dropped to solo, how long before the same guildies such as yourself was then demanding removal of solo even more than now? (complete with people coming from all over to add to a poll).

I bought a game where the head guy said in open forced PvP would be rare and that game mechanics would dissuade PvP & where open would be a largely co-operative experience... this is what was actually happening until around some time in feb.. then it all went to crud..

Elder Scrolls Online had a multi-guild system like that. It was rather nice. You could, for example, have your primary guild, but also be part of more general communities. In ED terms, you could, for example, be a member of the EIC, but also of 'Elite Explorers' Club' and 'LHS 142 Community' (a guild acting as a casual chat for people residing in a specific system) and so on. I like the idea.

Of course it's simple. It's Facebook Gangs in Space to beat up other Facebook Gangs in Space - that's absolutely all guilds amount to in games, and it's the only reason that peeps want to see them here - to show everyone who's the baddest Faceboom Gang in Space :)

what has that got to do with anything.... for that there IS the reddit poll.... this poll was a poll to get the feeling on THESE forums.

imagine if I was making a poll on a car forum saying What do you think of Ford GT and do you think its 14MPG is a problem..... I am only interested in what the people on that forum that I chat with think.... if someone posted the link to the poll on to a greenpeace website does that make the poll more or less accurate on what people on the forum I actually give a hoot about?

As one of the "zero day" accounts that voted on the poll, I find this pretty ridiculous. I've lurked on these forums since january, and this is the first issue that made me actually motivated to post. If you just wanted a poll of regular forum posters, you should have explicitly made that poll. It might be interesting that an issue like this is split pretty heavily based on where you previously have posted (here vs. the reddit) but I don't think it in any way makes this poll illegitimate.

If it looks like a duck, acts like a duck, quacks like a duck, then it's probably a guild.

How about "No!" :)

So we have
Guild / No-Guild
Open / Solo

in this thread.

Can I please see some Offline Client discussion, to make the unholy trinity of neverending thread-boredom complete?

Why the need to be recognised? Personally I am completely unaware of you and your group's goals and achievements and I would rather it remain that way. If you have achieved your personal goals then isn't that enough?

Just goes to show that many who play this game are totally unaware of Galnet News that features in the game, or you would have recognised our Group name immediately and the success we have achieved.

Spoken like a man who was never a member of a (good) guild. With a good player group you can easily find buddies to PvE or PvP together, make your own fun, help out newbies, fight griefers and make lots of friends. I still play with people I met 7 years ago in my Age of Conan guild, and my case is hardly exceptional.

fair point! having seen the chain mails sent around asking X Y Z to be upvoted on various topics i have nothing to do with myself however I still believe you are a minority case... but as i said you do make a good point.
My point is tho, we already know the results of the reddit poll so what is the point in copying it here?

(the downright rude and hostile attitude towards player groups being a big reason),

Declaring wholecloth that a forum is hostile to an opinion is a little bit like saying it's wrong for people to have opinions on a game they play and have paid for.

Player-owned stations can *ONLY* work under one very important condition: They must not be able to impose controls, permits, taxes or influence other players in any other way. Period. The unified background sim makes such impositions and declarations by players entirely unworkable across the three game modes. I suspect that once you remove all ability for players/groups to affect other players through their claim and ownership of stations a large proportion of the player base clamouring for the feature will declare the feature 'pointless' and walk away.

Besides everything else - I cannot, never ever, play a game where the possibility exists for "mur|)3r-L33tz kr3w kek" to become a station's authorized name, in-game. Just... Just, oh gods, no. Flat out no.

Considering this is hardly the only time since January that this has been raised - as a poll or otherwise, why did a link to reddit and THIS particular poll inspire you so much more than the other threads/polls since January?

Maybe I wasn't clear enough, but I think you have the exact same opinion as me. You're just saying what I wanted to say, maybe with better words :)

And that happened just after this thread was linked in the reddit thread?

Along with 2 other threads urging people to go vote?

That's quite a coincidence :)
I'm sorry, I came from the thread on these forums that just has been closed, linking here. I absolutely have no knowledge about what happened when merging with reddit and co.

With a side of Newtonian?

On a serious note, please stick with the guilds and player owned content in this thread. I dread to think what would happen if we had to merge this into the Open v Solo threadnaught.

Speaking as a player who never even looked at the forum, but reads reddit, I wouldn't have even *known* about the pole unless it had been posted there. So I made a forum account and voted. Yes, it's a zero day account, yes it's my first time coming here, yes I am a redditor. I am also a player, so I voted.

I don't actually want guilds. I've sort of proved, with The Code, that internal guilds aren't t necessary. I just want an extra box for 'enemy' next to the one for friend. Maybe ally too. That's the totality of my requirements for guild functionality.

The devs, and your expectation, that pvp would be rare in a universe with destructible ships and the means to destroy them was naive, to say the least. As was the expectation that a social species in a social space would not make alliances, friendships and joint enterprises in that social space.

Considering this is hardly the only time since January that this has been raised - as a poll or otherwise, why did a link to reddit and THIS particular poll inspire you so much more than the other threads/polls since January?

Because polls were disabled and threads or polls about guild topics usually got merged into the monster thread with the poll from 2013, so people could say "See how the poll ended? Noone likes guilds."
