The new settlements.. They're a positive talking point!

Ever since the alpha I wanted to take some time to take a good look at all the settlement types since these are definitely one of the things the developers got right :)

I believe there are 6 types: Agriculture, extraction, installation, high tech, military and tourism. They all have 4 varients ranging from 1 small pad to 2 large and 2 small. I'd rate them small, medium, large and huge, just like the hard points :)

I made a little video showcasing one varient of each economy type, I hope you enjoy!

And to the developers I say; job well done on these assets!

P.S. Can we please get increased security levels for an increased local faction status? This will give us more freedom to explore the beautiful rooms that we otherwise have no access to, legally. Think the HABs, luxury suites, etc.

I think the settlements are what the stations should have been like on foot. Places where you carry a side arm, where it could all kick off. Not pound land Star Citizen (safe places you might choose to buy perfume or sweets)

Hope so, eventually.

A couple of commandos patrolling space stations in full gear in systems with certain states wouldn't be a bad idea either. Not scanning players, just being there.

Settlements look cute atm, but are pretty lacking from the gameplay perspective.

You can only do 2 things on foot: Steal (hoard) stuff and Fight. (Restoration and fire extinguishment is barely any gameplay.)

You can access all buildings only by 1-3 legitimate airlocks, no roof access with an ARC-cutter, no freedom to approach the objective.

You can not have any friendly interactions while on foot: Everybody freak out about your presence, no option to talk to NPCs or legitimately trade for engineering items instead of having to steal them.

So settlements are a good looking gimmick right now - not impressive!

It would be cool if we could rent a room in some tourist settlement for example :)

We could then go there and stand beside the bed for a while.

I'm pretty sure Agri has at least 5 variants. I can think of 4 plus one in Alpha that I haven't seen as much live.

I love this part of the game. The level of detail is so impressive and they're all unique and yet, due to some prefab building types, somewhat familiar. It's a perfect mix. Throw in the near-infinite variations of the surrounding planet too (seen some amazing locations in my short time playing) and you've got a massive winning formula. Hope they keep adding to this (more mission types, creepy post-apocalyptic scenarios and bug hunting).

And those megaships - stick an interior in those, and you can be a good guy getting aboard to massacre pirates, or a bad guy getting in to loot and cause mayhem.

CMDR BlackMaze, Thank you for making this video. I haven't been to every settlement variant in game yet, but what I have seen in game is very impressive. o7

Everything that’s being said would be great additions to the settlements.

I too really hope that they will continue to expand upon them for a while!

Yep this is my problem with them too. There needs to be more content. A gun shop at military bases (more likely to have engineered items?), a bartender at tourist bases; faction specific NPC mission givers at the bar, in the command centre, giving missions relevant to the base type (massacre for military etc.) Space ships defending the base from air attack. This is a space ship game and these bases have no air force defence? Horizons bases have air force security why not Odyssey bases?

The game feels unfinished in many places and the new settlements are one of the most obvious examples. They're very well designed otherwise and a great foundation: lets hope they do something more with them.

It'd be neat if they could add special "Abandoned/Deserted" settlements on some planets, with no loot, no staff, no security, no fines, no random dropships, no missions leading to them. These could be used for small custom team multiplayer engagements (if the matchmaking decides to cooperate, obviously).

I agree, the settlements in Odyssey are very impressive. Found one with moonbase alpha vibes recently, great atmosphere. Ground and building textures really detailed. Really enjoy the planetary experience in ED.

Apparently there are 28 types, although those seem like the main themes yep

SETTLEMENTS (NEW FOR ODYSSEY)
  • Increased unique Settlement count from 10 in the Alpha to 28. Themes include Agricultural, Extraction, Industrial, Military, Research and Tourism across a variety of sizes

Saw quite a few smaller medical and laboratory types last night. As well as a sprawling agri-industrial laboratory affair.
