The Not so Engoodening of Elite Dangerous Odyssey Review - How I Fell Out of Love

How dare you not play on the Star Citizen Intel Optane SSD!

Seriously, everything is monetized. Star Citizen SSDs, webcams, hotas, pluche toys (no joke), a $27,000 completionist pack with all ships (spoiler: not all ships are included). Its like some feverish nightmare EA executives have but don't dare act upon. :D
Thanks, think I'm cured already.

Yes. Half a decade ago someone already spend more (https://www.pcgamer.com/meet-a-fan-who-has-spent-30000-on-star-citizen-ships/), and last year some dude proudly posted on twitter proof that he spend $50,000. There are tiers to it, like some offers you only get if you've spend at least $1000 on ships and so forth. These ships also come with 'perks', like 'lifetime insurance' and other stuff. It really is the Spinal Tap version of p2w.

There's a guy who has spent over 100k.

There is a slightly more serious and darker aspect to it though. Plenty of folks have 'invested' in Star Citizen by spending hundreds, thousands or tens of thousands of dollars on ships. The assumption was that as SC would become the Ultimate Game that would appeal to nearly every gamer (space sim, FPS, ORG manager, racing, colony builder, hospital crew, everything) these ships would become worth more every year. A 'grey market' appeared, where people could buy second hand SC ships. Believe it or not, but prices did not sky-rocket.

And you better believe me when I say that some of these folks are looking at unhappy ED players as an absolute godsend. There is now a small window during which disillusioned SC players can sell their ships to disillusioned ED players before they realise what is what. Its one reason why I bother to post about it. Disgruntled ED players diving into NMS, X4, Space Engineers, Rebel Galaxy or whatever? Fine. These are all cool games and worth the money, no strings attached. Go play them, dive into their communities, have fun. Maybe come back to EDO later, or not if you're done with it. Its all good.

But this cynical predatory SC crap? Heck no.

Crazy how fast every Elite related channel I watch has absolutely soured on Odyssey.

It's not a total shock given how FD has been treating ED for years. Many saw this day arriving, but have been constantly belittled by the knights. Unless FD makes some drastic changes in-house, there isn't gonna be a horse left for the knights to ride. I don't believe FD has what it takes to make the necessary decisions, they are going to sacrifice ED in order to keep the same people drawing paychecks. I hope to be wrong.

But if you are wrong what will you have to complain about then?! Surely its better for FD to keep messing things up!

Yep.

Look, I have to admit it, I'm intrigued. I've seen gorgeous videos from "content creators" I do watch (basically D2EA and OA) and have been tempted. But by god, all you have to do is a simple google search to see how awful it is. People think we're like a cult on here, but it's nothing compared to some of the SC ardents. I was talking to someone about it a week or two ago, and they likened it to scientology.

You get paid to recruit members (every player gets a referral code) and the rewards for doing so are persistent through the alpha and will remain on release (the afterlife... which is where we'll all be by the time its actually released). Anyone who's critical of the game within the circle gets slaughtered. They essentially send out "missionaries" to the social media accounts/forums of other games (you've seen 'em in here) to sow malcontent and "show people the way" (using their referral code of course).

But the player community aside (they're not all loons, obviously) just read some of the media reports. They've raised over a third of a BILLION dollars, but an article in Forbes said that by the end of 2017 they were almost broke. Ex employees paint a picture that makes the state of Frontier seem perfectly organized and running like a well-oiled machine. Remember how Frontier have been slaughtered for their Glassdoor reviews? Ironically Cloud Imperium have the exact same 3.7 star rating. (Only, and this is the cynic in me, most of FDevs negative ones have come in the last few months, whereas most of CIGs positive ones in the same span.)

This isn't to poop on the game. If its ever released I'll definitely buy it. I just find myself utterly confused that all these people who are "falling out of love" of Elite (and its understandable, nobody's saying its not a mess!) are suddenly lockstep in their love of a game that's got more bugs, is being developed by a company with just as much negativity surrounding them (arguably more), has just as many limitations (arguably more) than the game they love(d), and has a giant pile of evidence pointing to it being a pyramid scheme/money grab.

Thanks, think I'm cured already.

I've been "playing" for 2 years on the $100.00 I spent on a starter pack and another ship. Everything else I have I bought with in-game credits earned in a wildly successful business venture into bulk drug running. I just forked that much over to FDev in excitement over Odyssey for 2 accounts and some ARX. The former is providing less frustration right now. I put that money in knowing it's a concept and hoping that the concept becomes reality, but if not I'm not out anything more than a nice dinner with the family.

Sure, there are people dumping thousands into it, but there is nothing at all requiring you to do that. It is in fact made clear when you buy exactly what you are doing and what the money is for. I don't necessarily think CIG needs a pat on the back here but it's not some nefarious cabal of henchmen stealing money from you. However I do understand the way people view it. All I can say is that you don't have to become a degenerate gambler and pour in real money to fly around and see what you like or don't like.

I don't think you'll find a single person on here who thinks the game is fine. You might (if you look hard enough) find some people saying they're not experiencing the issues others are having - but nobody thinking that this is good or even acceptable.

What people are saying is that there's little point in running around screaming, demanding sackings, hoping to the company is destroyed, harassing or threatening developers, (none of which will actually SOLVE anything) or posting the same "There goes another content creator" thread since the exact same topic's been kicked around like a battered old football.

And that leaving the buggy mess that is Odyssey to jump ship to the buggy pyramid scheme that is Star Citizen is... well, we'll see where things are in a couple of months.
Do you not think it's significant that content creators for Elite are abandoning ship? Does that not say something about Elite as a whole? I agree with you about the "screaming, demanding sackings, hoping to the company is destroyed, harassing or threatening developers, (none of which will actually SOLVE anything)", as that doesn't accomplish anything. However, Hawkes has contributed quite a lot to the fanbase for Elite, as he's specifically spent quite a bit of time to help others save quite a bit of time due to the ridiculous design decisions around grinding in the game.

I am looking forward to reading what you think about that.

Yep. I watch these videos and chuckle. "Why play Elite"? You'll figure it out soon enough. After shooting the same unresponsive NPC in the same Cave/Bunker/Ship or whatever. You'll figure it out.

So just over 7 weeks since they re-badged the Alpha a full release.
almost a 1000 bug fixes later, what am I left with ?
  • Frame rate < 20 on settlements - so the by far the biggest features of Odyssey is virtually unplayable: No word on when / if it will be fixed.
  • New Planet is broken : No word on when / if it will be fixed.
  • Networking is terrible ( so many people struggling to play with friends ) : No word on when / if it will be fixed.
We have promise better communication, more open honesty ( lots and lots of honesty ) and monthly Developer Update stream:
No Stream, No Developer, and No real information on the future of ED:O

Time again since launch we have been told news and information is coming - it's now July the 8th and we have nothing still.

CM's are clearly promising what they are not allowed to deliver - Management are killing the community and the game.

ED:O has been described by various people as a dumpster fire, with CM's bravely running around trying to stamp out the flames.

Well it's too late now - the community is dying, the game is dying and Frontier do not care, if they did care they would released some meaningful information by now to give us hope - but the management are silent.

I've enjoy Elite Dangerous since it's release(and Elite from the ZX Spectrum days), I have 3 accounts and thousands of hours of game time logged, but I see no future in the game and as company Frontier have shown a complete lack of respect for both their product and the communities it gave rise too.

Goodbye Frontier.
