Modes The Open-Only Spectator

thats no so interesting.

you should do that in odyssey first.
no reason to do that in horizon, its empty. to easy.

and also, a challenge need a trial: iron man, if you die youve to clear save.

It is interesting for me at least. Nothing else this was about, and certainly not about a self-imposed challenge. If you don't find it interesting, feel free to ignore it.
Bon voyage, and watch your six, CMDR!

Wait - this experiment is in Horizons?

That's well - kinda like trying to find people in a train station after the train left.

Like written in the first post, it is Horizons and not Odyssey, yes. It is not Legacy, though. The reason for this is just that I'm using the free Epic account that is only the base game.
It was still interesting to see that the Horizons mode is just as abandoned as the Legacy one, it seems. I would not have expected this, given all the posts about how useless Odyssey is and how nobody wants to buy it. Maybe the new ships coming with it eventually convinced all the nay-sayers?
But then again, the experiment is far from being over. There is still a CG participation to be done, which was not possible due to the lack of CGs since the start. I also want to visit well-known places like Sol and ShinDez with it, but for that there are permits to be grinded for. Given the casual approach, I guess it will take another month or two until I can draw some conclusions from the experiment.
And who knows, maybe a sale comes along and I can pick up the DLC on Epic as well. I would then restart it, but this time from the view of on-foot content first.

So I really think that if this was to be a valid player experience - it should really be in Odyssey. You've pretty much culled out the active "pvp" crowd by going Horizon's only.

I applaud you for the time investment.

It is a valid player experience of somebody buying only the base game without Odyssey. This experience seems to be free of all the open-only hassles, but also of the supposed fun it might bring with it. But again: it was started over the holidays and has not seen a CG yet. We can't really conclude something for Horizons just yet.

BTW, the Spectator flew back from Juri to the Arissa territory already, but that was only a very short session with 2 jumps and of course no encounters at all. I just wanted to check the weekly tasks, and that feature is still bugged. It comes up with one or two tasks right after a login, and shows the rest only after some minutes in game. Weird.

Great to see someone document this.

Of course, everyone who already flies open frequently is going to be completely unsurprised at the results. You’ll find no hostile encounters and very few encounters at all outside obvious danger zones such as CGs, Deciat, Shinrarta, Sol, and the odd active Power Play system.

keep it up and fly dangerous!

You should make a GoFundMe page for Odyssey, I get the feeling someone would donate.
If the Epic store allowed gifting, I would have done it already tbh.

As Easy said, the bulk of PvP'ers will be in Odyssey now. So it would be a more brutal experience for someone starting in Ody.

Haha, good idea. Maybe I'll do that if no sale is showing up in the time I'm completing the current experiment. Next I will do some Fed rep grinding in order to get access to Sol and check how high the traffic is there. The plan is to do the Ochosi/Chakpa mail delivery service again. Is this still viable for getting up to Sol permit levels?

And off we go today to Ochosi collecting the mailman license. I'm curious how many back and forth flights I have to do to get the Sol permit.

That's it for the mailman career. Spectator is now a proud petty officer and holding the Sol permit. Running back and forth Ochosi and Chakpa was actually not that boring, given that the navy missions also brought along some other destinations, too. Haven't seen anybody, though. Not that I watched out for someone with all that SCOing. Which is fun, BTW.

Hurray, a CG! Off I go to HIP 90578 in order to hand in at least one report for that engineered DSS.
EDIT: and done. There was one lone unarmed Orca CMDR there, peacefully exploring in the CG system. Spectator still sits in that megaship, but I had to log off for today. I'll watch the scene in the coming days.

Next short hop will be flying from the CG system to Sol for sight-seeing, then back again to maybe deliver another batch of carto.

EDIT: finished. I had action on the gank-o-meter (2 CMDRs) while departing the CG system, but never had one on the radar. The flight to Sol was without surprises, Sol itself no encounters as well. I visited the debris field and even managed to scoop up 10 meta-alloys and a heart in order to unlock the bobblehead.
Made for a shiny bobbling on the dashboard while I headed out again, this time I thought a detour to Arque might be interesting for the tiny CRCR, but I forgot that I would need the Palin invitation for that, which I don't have. A well, some extra LYs, but in the end it payed out at the Trailblazer with something like 20+ millions.
It seems like the CG is paying first discovery bonus for some of the planets, even if they are certainly already discovered. Earned me a promotion to Ranger, which is a nice step forward to an early Elite rank for the ShinDez permit.
On my approach to the Trailblazer, I also saw some hollow icons and much activity on the meter, this was from 3 CMDRs according to the contacts list. So 5 encounters today, all of them in the CG system.

Its a good idea, but as others have said, Horizons is not the place to do this.

You will invariably encounter gankers in Ody' however it won't be at the frequency some forum-dwellers like to make out it will be.

Basically just high-traffic systems, moreover, you'll only bite rebuy if you're in a sh**fit, ofc if you're an experienced cmdr, the odds of that rebuy are pretty small as death is entirely optional in Elite. More to the point, rebuys are also basically free.

Yes yes, we know its about "time lost" before someone pipes up. (Rolls eyes and yawns)

As written elsewhere, it is not about proving anything. It is just about a personal experience flying in open-only with what I have. That it turns out the way it is was not planned, there is no agenda behind it in this aspect.
Thus Horizons is as valid a place as Odyssey for that. After all, people can buy the base game only and play with it. For them, it will turn out mostly as described (depending on experience and/or talent, of course).
Once I've reached Elite and get access to ShinDez, I guess I can do a first summary on the experiment. If I can get my hands on a cheap offer for the DLC, I'll probably get it and start over, but this time from the on-foot point of view. On that note, anybody knows if I can keep the CMDR name on a reset? I only did it once when I started years ago, and I don't remember how it was, and don't know if the mechanics are even the same today.

Fair enough. You should just be able to type in the same name after you wipe the save yeah. At least unless someone ninja's the name, which seems a little unlikely

Had to break away early on yesterday due to RL, but I'll pick it up today with the same agenda. I'm already in Arissa space doing PP work, but met nobody so far.
