The Open v Solo v Groups thread

I prefer my block list to remain empty - it causes less instancing problems for other players...
YMMV, naturally.

I remember testing the blocking system with some friends after it was updated to the current version.
It was hilarious, I'm not sure if it was working correctly or not with the results but it did make it funny to mess about with.

So there were 3 of us, let's use A/B/C to make it simple;

If A put B on block. Then when all 3 sat outside of a station A and B couldn't see or interact with each other, at all.
Yet C could see them both and interact with them both. The other 2 just watched C interact with empty space.

Being in the same wing didn't seem to matter either. They could see each other's wing icons in the HUD and see if the other's shields were damaged at any point.

No idea if it is still the same, I've not tested it since. And despite my joke in another thread with Rebel, my in-game block list is empty.

there hasn't been a lot said about it in the recent past, possibly it has been 'fixed', although I doubt it, block has been reinforced a lot since I started playing.

Bravo!
I'm quite good at running away, I assume you share that talent?

I bought the game to play with r/l friends, so while I will use Solo and Open now and again, most of my playtime is in our clan's PG.
We tend to make sure hauliers have an escort and enough defences to tank long enough for any NPCs to be dealt with.
So've not had to run away often.

It's a shame we cannot use our spare ships and deploy our AI crew as wingmen. My clan members do not play this game much anymore.
So I'm spending more time wandering planets, scanning rocks and plants than I am hauling.

My reasoning for supporting open only play as far as Powerplay (and BGS) are concerned are this: It is very demoralizing to have a force of players attacking everything you have spent years building up (especially true in terms of BGS) who you can not engage with or even see to know who they are so you can do a counter attack against their own BGS. It makes the game feel less like you are fighting against actual humans and that the game itself is tearing down everything you made. It's actually quite similar to the experience of getting griefed in other games if the players doing it could turn invisible and attack and you could do nothing about it and not even know who they are.

I can sympathize with those of you who have had bad experience with PvP ( I myself have had such experiences where people were just killing for the sake of killing and to no other goal than that). I am not against using PG or solo to avoid the typical ganker types you would see in Shinrarta Dezhra or around any engineer or CG. I am only concerned with the use of PG or solo insofar as it's use to gain a tactical advantage over an adversary in the arena of power play and BGS where the problems i explained above would exist.

While this is an issue that there are strong feelings about on both sides I do hope that those on the other side reading this post can at least understand why I support open only BGS / Power Play and that it's not because I am some ganker who wishes to blow up the innocent (I do not condone that activity myself) but that I am worried about the integrity of the game when it comes to activities where players actions could negatively impact other players years of built up progress.

thanks for reading.

100% agree. Well said. Now wait for the counters..

I understand it can be annoying being attacked by someone and not knowing who they support themselves so you can counter attack that way. However, when it happens, we can counter their actions by countering the faction they are pushing, and in many cases, their faction is simply the faction being pushed, and at the end of the day, that needs countering no matter what, and diverting forces to attack someone somewhere else is weakening your home effort. If its a player faction, you can figure out anyway who is doing the attacking, at least the group, if not the individuals.

Also, i know of one case where the person/group undermining our faction didn't have their own faction to attack back. They were doing it simply to annoy our group, some sort of grudge. Never did understand it.

That's BGS... for PP its even clearer. You won't know who the individuals are, but you know which power is undermining you based on location.

There's no innocent, trust me: enemy is enemy.

Problem is widening the goalposts. BGS was not meant to be the game, or gamed on. It is just background simulation equally affected by players regardless of mode. I might understand making Power Play as open only, but BGS? No, no and no.

Not necessarily Open-only, but at least weighted. Conflict Zones with real players provide a very different experience compared to PvE CZs. I’d expect the risk of encountering players to be rewarded, and player kills in that context should carry more weight on both the conflict outcome and combat bonds.

This is a solution that I can get on board with! That way if those who enjoy playing in private groups want to manipulate the BGS and are not harming a player group then they can do so still but they will have to come to open if they wish to fight against a player group.
