The Open v Solo v Groups thread

Having to inform my wife that we don't have any coffee when she wakes up.
Thats nothing.

Real fear is knowing you can't go to the shops for twenty or so days, and you're down to your last bag of Yorkshire tea.

Believe me, the fact you see all this as something to compete with me speaks even louder volumes. :)

If we're in two differing factions in Powerplay, we're competing against each other in some shape or form, whether you like it or not. Trying to imply thats some sort of defecit on my part is at best, failing to understand the concepts underpinning Powerplay and at worst, disingenuous.

Which I agree with in principal, I'd rather not have to interact with such people either. However where you and I split on this path is that the problem for me is, you are still having to play with them (in the context of Powerplay).

But only in a totally abstract way, which is identical to the other 99% of players I have a zero percent chance of interacting with, due to the fact that our play sessions, version choices, and physical locations don’t overlap.

Please check the Ascendancy patch notes. The leaderboard is for "Friendly competition", just so everyone is aware
The leaderboard we've seen is at internal to each faction, based on individual cmdr levels.

Whereas actual Factional (i.e. not indivdual) standing (which is what I'm referring to) is not.

Brrokk, I can assure you it very much did, from my personal experience of the first six or so months of powerplay communities. When I say 'Open Only' in this context, it relates to Powerplay activities and how the average players in those communities naturally migrated (or were heavily encouraged by their peers) towards the most advantageous way to play a competitve game system, but how, in turn it killed the spirit of community that was being built around it. (e.g. Why get together in a wing to do a fortification run where some took on the role of topcover or pre-emptive interdictors, when you could do it risk free in Private or Solo where all 4 of you are shieldless cargo hulks? Why get a group together to go into a PP CZ where you might meet a rival player or wing and lose all your hard work, when you can go into the same CZ in solo or a PG and zero throttle turretboat while binge-watching Star Trek on your primary monitor?)

I personally I don't have an issue with folk playing to their preferred mode, until the moment that choice leverages an advantage in a competitive situation, to which the only counter is to adopt the same practice, if you get me?

Here’s the issue as I see it. I’ve heard this kind of statement all the time, and it’s always the same old song and dance: “We do our work in Open. It’s everyone else that’s doing their work in Solo/PG.”

Now, a significant majority of players choose to play in Open. Open has numerous advantages over Solo/PG, especially forming pick up wings with complete strangers, and the drawbacks are few, and usually involve an instance being hosted by a poor machine or poor connection. The usual suspects that would make Open a cesspit are for the most part conspicuously absent, and the few you rarely encounter are easily countered with some low effort defenses and not flying slowly in a straight line while watching Netflix.

And this is where the issue comes into play. Either the old PowerPlay community is significantly less likely than the typical player to choose Open, or this game’s networking architecture and matchmaking rules are ill suited for the type of adversarial PvP you claim you want.

If it’s the latter, which I believe is h the case, you’re never going to get the experience you want, and you’re going to just be more frustrated by the side effects of your unintentions. If it’s the former… why on Earth would anyone want to play with you, when can’t even play by your own rules?

I say, it could at least rename solo mode to practice play, or even private play, and even if they were still counted in community goals and BGS. And private groups, I say, private groups could be party mode. And open mode could just be called "Play".

I think respectfully you need to re-read my post again then, because as at no point did I say 'We do our Work in Open'. What I said is because of the benefits Solo and PG mode offers to players engaging in Powerplay (the reducing to zero the risk of encountering only thing that stands a chance of opposing their journey to deliver their cargo or data/kill farming, particularly in those early days, where you could lose combat bonds etc. on death).

Organised Powerplay gameplay as a whole (regardless of faction... in fact its why I left ALD, but thats a story for another time) slowly migrated away from Open as their preferred playmode for PP in the first half year, and the quality of the mechanics/community built around it suffered for it.

Powerplay in those opening months was fun, invoigorating and engaging gameplay with lots of healthy competition ongoing. In my eyes what killed that was the migration of tactics by organised play types towards the emphasis on Solo/PG modes as that dynamism was replaced with a type of play where to succeed required minimal engagement in the game (or other players, a peculiarity I felt in what was encouraging teampla) with mindless hauling in shieldless cutters, or parking in a combat zone for 3 hours while you watched a movie. What I would have liked, would been for it to return to those halcyon days, which we had in the past, so is within the realms of achievability.

Then you're one of the few exceptions, then, because all I ever hear from the old-school PowerPlay representatives is "We do our work in Open, it's everyone else that does their work in Solo/PG."

What I said is because of the benefits Solo and PG mode offers to players engaging in Powerplay (the reducing to zero the risk of encountering only thing that stands a chance of opposing their journey to deliver their cargo or data/kill farming, particularly in those early days, where you could lose combat bonds etc. on death).

Which is funny, because for as long as ALD's leadership didn't require me to jump through hoops to get access to their overall strategy, the communications from on high, regarding mode choice, was essentially: "Don't be like those other guys. Play in Open!" That was also the message I got from AD's leadership when I switched my alliegance from ALD to AD, as well as every other public facing communications for Powers I was the least bit curious about.

And that is essentially the entire question when it comes to this whole topic: Was the old-school PowerPlayerbase significantly less likely than the general playerbase to choose a mode other than Open? If that's the case, as you insist it is, given that the overall message we get from all the other old-school PowerPlay representatives in this discussion, one of two things is happening:

1) This game's networking architecture and matchmaking rules is not designed for this type of confrontational PvP.

2) The old-school PowerPlayerbase, in general, cannot be trusted to play by their own house rules.

While I believe it's the former, if it is truly the latter, and these players cannot be trusted to play by their own rules, then how can we trust them not to act in an unsportsmanlike manner for a competetive advantage? You yourself claim that you would much rather play in Open, but they've "forced" you into Solo/PG for some etheral advantage. If they take action to poison instancing for that some etheral advantage, how can we trust you not to follow suit, becuase they're "forcing" you to do likewise to remain "competitive."

This is the type of behavior I've seen in similar MMOs I've played in the past, and that behavior makes playing a game a miserable experience for everyone who believes "It doesn't matter if you win or lose, but how you play the game." That good sportsmanship always takes precedent over winning. And when faced with such a toxic environment, our reaction isn't to sink to their level, but to quit playing, and find a new game.

I've played in Open since the beginning, fully expecting it to become a cesspit like other games became in the past until the game either died due to lack of players, or the development team added a PvP switch in an effort to control the behavior of the usual suspects. Much to my surprise, Open never became the putrid morass I expected it to become, and the usual suspects are few and far between. As a result, I still play in Open. It is a fun experience, and I see nothing good coming from changing the status quo. On the other hand, I see a whole lot of bad if the cohort of players most inclined to choose Open actually do play in Solo/PG to gain some hypothetical competitive advanatge.

I think what is obvious now is that:
BGS/PP wont be Open Only
BGS/PP or anything wont have any type of weighting
BGS/PP and all game content will be available in any mode

Those continuing to clutch at straws need to just let it go, we need to move on.

O7

Well as you phrased it in the same way as the stage show I'm working for the next two weeks;

They can just...

It has probably been mentioned before, but here goes. CMDRs using Solo/PG to undermine and subvert others in PP/BGS are just like governments in real life who use covert means/proxies. The chances of catching the culprits and ending such acts is remote. B can suspect A of covert hostile acts and can chose to ignore, go to war or retaliate in kind. They could also try for a treaty (not worth the paper it is written on) or try raising the issue in a recognised forum (UN?) to change the system. And then there are those that just want to cause trouble and strife.

All in all the game mirrors real life.

Yes, it's been mentioned before and it's still wrong now. Players who use Solo or PG are playing the game as intended (as are those who use Open). We're given different ways to play to make the game appeal to as large a number of players as possible, and in general this works.

If your comment was just about PP I'd have some agreement: I don't see why ED shouldn't have some actual PvP content and I think PP could provide it. I have to say that I don't think the present PP2 looks like an attempt to provide it though.

But as often happens, you've conflated PP and BGS. BGS is influenced by all modes equally by design, to make the galaxy seem to respond to all player input. I see no justification for changing this: BGS simply isn't a PvP thing.

There was a fun reddit thread today where a guy posted about his experience getting ganked and how it was the first time he'd met another player, and he ended up striking up a conversation with the ganker and then getting a bunch of advice and now they're on each other's friend lists, how it was unexpected but a fun experience for him...

... and the redditors proceeded to spam the thread telling him to go to solo and mobius and accusing him of being some sort of weird masochist, one guy actively told him that he hoped the guy gets ganked without rebuy when he buys an anaconda just so he'd learn the correct attitude, it was wild, people just really can't accept that other people like playing the game differently to them.
