While waiting for the servers to come back up yesterday I spotted that you can still occupy yourself with the Training missions and Challenge scenarios.

So, here's a little challenge for people to complete next time the servers are off-line (or if you just have 20mins or so to spare and are looking for some instant SRV action).

The Patch Day SRV speedcam challenge.

Basically, start the game, go into the Challenge Scenarios, pick "SRV Practice" and then just drive straight past the mission objective, keep going and see how fast you can get your SRV to go before you blow up and/or run out of fuel.

The following infographic may help with the technique.

My personal best from yesterday was 325 m/s ..

.. but that was then smashed by @Darplata94 with a run at 479 m/s ..

Post your speedcam screenshots and I might do a scoreboard if we get enough.

Oh ... crap. Last time there was a patch you could still launch the game to play the training simulations.

I've just tried tho' and I see what you mean. Well that's a bummer. I made a whole new forum signature banner and everything.



Maybe it'll be available later?

P.S. even weirder - apparently some people are in the training simulation and doing the challenge right now. Perhaps it's down to something like which server you end up connecting to from your geographical location?

I just tried launching from Oculus (in pancake) and once the game loaded got the 'Servers Down' message too.

Interesting move. I mostly used it too smooth the bouncing.

I'm still trying to get on - servers say "OK" but it says it can't connect to authentication servers. I've restarted and trying again.

I wanted to put a little film together and then inadvertently binned all the footage along with speedbowl stuff.

I fully expected to boom here:

but didn't.

So kept going, turns out orbital velocity is 1440m/s:

I might've 'broken' the challenge. Hit that speed on orbit 2.

The sunset/sunrise was really quite beautiful:

The world is a proper potato, I was over 20km above the target after the orbit, and then within 10s of metres of impacting 5 minutes later. Panic boosted which added too much to height so next time the sun came around I was off:

I've never SRV orbited before, always meant to. It was nice it just happened doing something else random.

How the hell did you get up to orbital speed without repair synthesis!?!?!

I don't really know, just happened.

I mean, I got up to ~150 with minimal damage which I've done before, but then (from memory) only hit the ground 3 more times with the top screenshot being just before the last.
I was concentrating on getting the bounce right over speed and aiming uphill to minimise vertical impact and it just worked. Not sure I could do it again.
