The PC specs vs. Performance thread

PC Specs

Processor:
Intel Core i7-8700K @ 3.70GHz
RAM: 16 GB @ 2133 MHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti (12 GB)
Game Drive/OS Drive: Samsung 970 PRO M.2 NVMe (512 GB)
Motherboard: ASUS PRIME Z370-A
Resolution: 3440 x 1440 @ 100hz (G-Sync)

GAME PERFORMANCE ('Ultra' Graphics Settings):

Station Concourse:
25-38 FPS
Planetary Settlements: 20-35 FPS
Space and space combat: 77-80 FPS
Planetary combat: 15-20 FPS

GAME PERFORMANCE ('Low' Graphics Settings):

Station Concourse:
32-48 FPS
Planetary Settlements: 28-45 FPS
Space and space combat: 125-130 FPS
Planetary combat: 20-25 FPS

The most surprising thing here is that there is very little difference in performance between 'Low' and 'Ultra' graphics settings. 🤔

Odyssey runs fine. No connections or FPS/graphics issues. Compared to Horizons, my FPS is 140-150 (45C)
Can you post evidence of this please? It seems wildly unrealistic based on everyone else's experiences.

CPU
Intel Core i7 10700K @ 3.80GHz 40 °C
Comet Lake 14nm Technology
RAM
16.0GB Dual-Channel Unknown @ 1463MHz (16-18-18-36)
Motherboard
ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. TUF GAMING B460M-PLUS (WI-FI) (LGA1200) 34 °C
Graphics
AG352UCG6 (3440x1440@120Hz)
8GB NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 (Gigabyte) 49 °C
Storage
223GB Corsair Force 3 SSD (SATA (SSD))
465GB Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus 500GB (Unknown (SSD))

Odyssey runs very well, all options maxed out and good FPS
That's a bit vague - your idea of "runs very well" may not be the same as everyone else's.

Can you post the actual FPS you're getting please ('Ctrl+F' in game)?

This is what I send to FD when they were asking for performance feedback. Hasn't really changed with patches:

Windows 10 Pro 64b, build 19042
Gigabyte X570 Motherboard
Ryzen 7 3800X stock speeds
32GB DDR4 3200MHz
Gigabyte GTX 1060 6GB
PCI-E 3.0 NVMe SSD (Western Digital Black SN750)

Always playing in open, never in wing/group. Running fullscreen at 1440p, mid setting, no VR. Generally have Chrome open on 2nd monitor (YouTube/Netflix), lately performance metrics on 3rd. No third party modifications.

Fps
~100 in space
45-50 in station, on pad/in hangar.
~30 on concourse and around settlements, generally just below 30, occasionally far below (15-20) depending on position and facing. Biggest issue for me occurs in damaged settlements. Framerate will be "ok" one moment, but then turning to look down a smoky corridor it can drop <5. Literal slideshow.

Latest Nvidia driver. Temporarily rolled back to 1 year old version; no discernible improvement.

My PC:
i7-10700K @ 4.8 Ghz, cooled by Noctua NH-D15
SSD 970 EVO Plus 2 Tb
RAM 32 Gb @ 2133 Mhz
GTX 1070Ti
1440p with G-Sync enabled on Asus TUF Gaming monitor
All settings at max.

Getting about 100 fps when flying in space
On foot in the hangar or on the planet surface about 50-60 fps
In the station's public area or inside in the building on the planet it is anywhere from 26 to 40 fps, but couple of times it dropped to 16 fps or so. I don't understand what causes these drops as it appears to be totally random. Sometimes I'm just standing still somewhere in the quiet corner and fps floating all over the place.Changing resolution to 1080p didn't made whole lot of the difference and I went back to 1440p.
I didn't check my actual FPS count until after patch 4 update, so I have no idea if there was any reasonable improvement in numbers but it feels little better now.

i knew it would not take long before someone wants "proof"
just because your fps is horrible does not mean everyones is ;)

i see 80+ fps all concourses
i see 240 fps in space
i see 120 fps in space near stations
i see 80~150 fps in the docking stages and hangers
i see 17 fps while looking at the FPS Monster
(i posted video of that for "proof" and i have a new video of the FPS Monster in a different area i will be posting too with 17~100 fps)
i see 80~100 fps in most all settlement with or without fires
i see 50 fps in CZ's
(this seems to be that maybe, because the NPC's/AI is being ran by our rigs and not the servers....?)

Likewise, extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. 😉

Interesting that you are not running any game settings on 'Ultra'. Hardware like yours should easily be able to run a game like Odyssey on 'Ultra' at that resolution.

silly child ...
you are the "ultra" fool with crap fps not me!

i never built any of my rigs to play games on "ultra"
i dont play any game on ultra ... that never has been my thing 😛

And yet, if you look at my post (https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/the-pc-specs-vs-performance-thread.583097/post-9330759) you'd see that there is virtually no difference in performance between 'Low' and 'Ultra' graphics settings.

My point is that your (our) spec machine should be able to far exceed any of the FPS you (we) have posted on a game like Odyssey - implying that there is a problem with Odyssey's rendering engine, not our PC's.

your issue is not mine ...
i can lower my settings and see a big difference in performance!
(except with that FPS Monster)

sorry, that your system cant utilize the different settings ... which is odd!
have you deleted your gfx folder and let ED remake it?
i did as i had a gfx issue(way to dark) when odyssey first was released and that issue was fixed with me doing that

PC Specs

Processor: Intel Core i7-4790k @ 4.4GHz (all cores)
RAM: 32 GB @ 1600 MHz
GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3070
Game Drive/OS Drive: Samsung 860 M.2 Sata 3
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD5H-BK
Resolution: Triple screen 7680 x 1440 @ 120hz (G-Sync)

GAME PERFORMANCE ('High' Graphics Settings):

Station Concourse: 25-45 FPS
Planetary Settlements: 20-40 FPS
Space and space combat: 90-120 FPS
Planetary combat: 15-40 FPS

If I change to single screen 2560x1440 it makes on foot a lot more consistent, but surprisingly I don't gain the FPS you would expect. While it's an older CPU it never goes over 70% and at 7680x1440 the bottle neck should be negligible.

The game is set to Ultra settings.

PC Specs:

Processor: i5 8600k
RAM: 16gb 3400 mhz
GPU: RTX 2070
OS/Game Drive: 500gb SSD
Resolution: 1080 @ 60hz

GAME PERFORMANCE:

Station Concourse: 58-60 FPS
When looking through glass it drops to 50ish FPS.

Planetary Settlements: 58-60 FPS
Except where there is lots of glass, then it drops to about 40.

Space and space combat: 60 FPS
Unfettered FPS is nearly 200 FPS

Planetary combat (non-combat zones): 50-60 FPS

Planetary Combat Zones: Haven't tried.

It's very playable for me on ultra settings, but yes it has some issues.

I'm still unsure what the actual issue is though, whether it's GPU utilisation, CPU utilisation, ram utilisation, or a mixture of all.

Yes, I've deleted my gfx folder and allowed ED to remake it.

Personally, I would expect much better FPS than the values you've posted for the high-end hardware you're using - especially considering you're not even running the game on Ultra.

In my opinion, 'Ultra' doesn't look much better than 'Low' which might explain why it doesn't appear to make a huge amount of difference to FPS performance.

Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 3600
Memory: 16384MB RAM
Card: Radeon RX 580 Series 8GB @2560 x 1440
Drive: 512GB SSD
I have the newest drivers installed
Settings based on Medium but I changed almost everything to low except Textures that I have changed to High and Medium, motion blur is off - of course
In space my GPU has a usage of 80-100% and it is running fine with 60FPS, i have huge FPS drops down to 17FPS with average FPS of 28 when I am in the concourse, or in a CZ, the usage of the GPU is on 100% and the fans are screaming and my PC is hovering 3cm over the ground when I am running around. Exploration on foot is an average of 45FPS, I did some massacre missions in small settlements and the FPS it is an average of 30 then. It seems I have the worst experience in the CZs, it is unthinkable to take part in a fight there.
If I use the Medium settings without changes my FPS are worse around 10FPS less, CZs are a slideshow and I get some sort ofmotion sickness in the concourse

i7 7700 on a z270 chipset
16Gb DDR4 2333 RAM
GTX 1080ti
1Tb NVMe M.2 drive
43" 4k 60Hz main monitor used for the game, two 24" 1080p 144Hz monitors (Portrait either side, not used for the game)

I normally play Horizons with settings to ultra terrain slider to max at 4k and the framerate never dips below 60fps (capped).

At those settings in Odyssey I get around 18-22fps at worst while salad hunting on planets and in social areas, with considerable jerking & dropping of frames if the view moves rapidly, never improving with multiple looks to the same direction or objects.

Playing with shadows turned down from ultra to high, and at x0.65 supersampling I get ~45fps at worst, and the stuttering is reduced but still present, but most of the time it maintains 60fps (capped). The jerkiness caused by terrain load in while flying at high speed low altitude (something salad hunting encourages) is appalling. In Horizons the gameplay didn't make the pop-in noticeable and there was little to no jerkiness once the terrain was loaded (which didn't take long). In Odyssey I can reduce quality to get the FPS up but can't eliminate the jerkiness and the gameplay makes pop-in at close range undesireable. On foot the pop-in & jerkiness are undetectable because of the lower speed of travel, the SRV it's usually acceptable apart from the rocks.
