The Power of the Influence of the Data of the Explorer of the Distant Worlds.

Cula-Ta made a thread about the handing in off the vast amounts of data which will be returning in a few months time.

This made me wonder about a possibility. A concerted effort to have a huge impact in the bubble by propping up a minor faction that the explorer community feels worthy to be propped up. If such a faction even exists. I haven't been involved much in the BGS and factions, and there's really only 1 I know. Which I'm not a part of, but it's located at the edge of the bubble, so a convenient point to hand in data, and help friends of a fellow CMDR. So I'm not even sure whether this is possible. If the faction could be a silly faction, I'm all for it. I think. Idea is about 3 minutes and 46 seconds old, so it's quite possible it's terrible. Too early in the day for me to make that assessment.

Think of the data you're carrying as instant influence. Then think of our numbers. Why not give the bubble a taste of the might of the explorer community?

And to answer your question: Oh I am very much aware of the slings and arrows of this proposal :) Quibbles on which faction to prop. Should we create our own faction? (I'd rather not, but if others want to, I'd prop them with extra love on the side)

See how I avoided using the DW tag? :p

Does anybody have any idea as to how much influence we can get by selling data, and what are the dependencies and variables. Kancro might know with his knowledge of SEPP.

Personally I'm going to sell the first 9 million to the first system I come to to get Elite. Then I'm going to use the rest to gather permits.

I've not really aligned myself with any minor power (although I have a home system) but if I have anything left after the permit buying shopping spree I'll drop the rest on the faction that the community supports.

What's the betting there's an Exploration CG a couple of weeks after we reach Beagle Point?

I think in a great show of disappointment concerning "exploration love" the members of the Distant Worlds Expedition should deny Stellar Cartographics ANY data gathered on this expedition and not sell a single byte of exploration data at all, UNTIL at least some reasonable improvements have been made to exploration functionalities.

Think big! Think of the GalNet news! Resist Explorers Exploitation NOW!

BGS swings are limited each day to a few percent (5%ish, depends on population), so any political shenanigans would have to be very drawn out.
You only get to take 1 station at a time, and the controlling station is always last, so in a system where the ruling faction controls several stations, it would have to be even more drawn out, and very controlled.

For all you ancient Palladium players out there, this counts as "+5 Clever but futile idea"

I admit, it has been a while I sold data just to up the influence. I remember it had quite an impact.

I'll take clever and futile any day of the week.

For what is worth, SEPP is working in having its seven systems ready and fully secured and safe by the time we come back. With 5 systems already controlled and on high security, we are pretty much on schedule.

As Dommarra pointed out, it's not going to make much of a dent due to the mechanics and caps of the BGS, but it would have been a good idea a few months back when we didn't have that. So, good thinking!

For that same reason, is not like it would do much for SEPP, as we already control the systems and have healthy influence. Philosophically speaking, yes, it would do lots as it is the very mission of our nation to offer a safe harbor for explorers.

And lastly, but most importantly, it benefits explorers to get to a system knowing they won't get interdicted.

with a very structured and planned effort (i have no fear the DW people can manage that) it could be done nevertheless. drop enough explo data everyday, to raise influence(s) of the factions you want to back (taking over a system), win the war (players with millions of explo data in combat zones? or friends. or people who have already spent their explo data) to control system, trigger expansion (using explo data, without pushing the faction into a boom, which will block an expansion), expand (theretically you could expand after 10 days), get influence in the new system by coordinated exploration data, trigger war, win war, repeat...

on the other hand - maybe you simply want to coordinate with some player factions? i guess, many will be happy to have exploration data dumped in an organized way.

In case it's of interest in relation to this, the First Great Expedition, members of which are participating in DW, has a minor faction in the HIP 72043 system, which is in independent space near the Alliance, not far from the frontier.

The faction is called the Institute of Galactic Exploration and Research (IGER) and home port is Kippax Ring in orbit around the 4th planet, and it has expanded to adjacent systems.

Can I suggest supporting the Fuel Rats? They have a minor faction at Fuelum as I recall...

When (If :D ) I get back with data, I'll pop in to prop up.

Does the 1 mil Data equals 0.5% influence still hold true? If so, I'll at least sell 10 mill for each faction.

Im gonna prop up my fed influence, as I want to get to sol. Im one rank away, and I also want the FAS, but thats all Im doing with it

+getting to elite in exploration hopefully :D

Ziggy, you were faster than me bringing up this topic! +1 rep to you.

Before we decide which factions to support with these efforts, I would propose to do some research first.
The research question is: how much influence can be gained by selling exploration data?

So everybody picks a low traffic system with accessible station, records the current influence levels, sells 10 mio CR worth of exploration data upon return, and checks the influence change of the controlling faction 24 hours later, together with system, controlling faction name and population size.

With enough CMDRs participating, we can learn:
- how much influence can be gained by selling exploration data
- what is the relationship between pop size and influence gain (this can certainly be extrapolated to other BGS efforts)
- what is the cap on influence changes per day

What do the others think? I'm volunteering to collect and evaluate the data

I didn't know there was a minor faction of dedicated explorers. Thank you!
