The problem with Engineers and Rank missions

So i just got the game on ps4 and gotta say i love it so far spent the first 2 days just ing around in imperial space but i realized i havent been ranking up or getting the rank missions.

After digging aroung i found out its cause i got an invite to the engineer for engines and now im stuck doing a 400ly journey for no reason just to get some damn meta alloy so i can rank up.

So my question is why the are these two things tied together god dammit im on my second ship and ur yanking me halfway across the galaxy to force me to see the alien stufff rather then letting just naturally want to go there I just wanted to contnues playing the game not spend 2 hours jumping

anyways any advice on how to save me some time im 60/90 jumps so anything to stop me from having to go there and back.

You normally get a rank up mission when 100% of the shown rank is full. However in some systems you dont get thease missions, i would suggest go to a fraction owned system with a high population.

Engineers have nothing to do with the rank of Fed or Imp.
Could also that you have to sign up 1st before you gain progress. I cant tell anymore its been quite some time for me already.

This game is sold on the premise ye can play yer own way...however...rngeers is frontiers way of forcing ye to try all aspects of the game if ye just cant play without the mods. Thats basically the ethos behind the why and there are many who defend this approach...while others constantly complain about it.

It is entirely possible to ignore the rngeers entirely, although it wont make the game any easier by doing so especially if ye play in open. But its not impossible...some of us have been ignoring them quite effectively since they dropped last year. Its all about choices...ye make the choice to play the rngeers then expect to jump through hoops ^

They're not. To rank up you need a mission that says something like "Imperial Navy supply run". You don't need to unlock any engineers for these to appear. What gave you the impression these were related?

Don't do the engineer invite yet. Wait until you have a Diamondback or Asp Explorer with good jump range. It's torture otherwise, and Felicity Farseer is the easy one.

Hi there,

Having an invitation pending from an engineer has no effect on rank missions spawning.

Thanks,
Dom

Yes, and at this stage in the game the OP won't have many materials to buy upgrades with anyway. I'm glad I didn't start to engage with engineering until I was in an Asp and well over a hundred hours in. That way I'd already accumulated quite a lot of mats and data in the course of normal play, and just had to look for the few bits I was missing. Gathering everything from scratch would be so boring.

Haha, well that's about as definitive as it gets.

Dom,
Could you explain in more detail why this seems different than what you said?

"4. Complete any outstanding permit, rank-up, or Engineer invitation missions that you are currently working on or have available. Stations will not offer permit/rank missions to Commanders that have already undertaken or been offered such a mission."

It has always been my experience that ranking missions are easier to get if you have good reputation with the mission giver. For example, if you're sitting at 100% Federation rank, start looking at a Federation aligned mission giver that you are at least Cordial with. Sometimes they will give you the mission directly, and sometimes you can do another mission for them and the ranking mission will show up wherever that mission takes you to. Rinse and repeat if necessary a couple times and you'll find your mission. The mission description will mention the Federation or Empire.

Oh I see where the confusion arises now. The message you got from Farseer is an invitation, rather an invitation mission. You got it for reaching Scout rank. In order to access some of the other engineers, one of the things you have to do is get an invitation from a specific minor faction. This appears as a mission on the board at stations controlled by that faction, under certain conditions. Like so: http://i.imgur.com/EuBAfGs.jpg

I guess you have to clear such missions for ranking missions to spawn, but you don't have to worry about that. Totally see where you were coming from now though.

EDIT: Just noticed I'm not replying to the OP. Applies to both you guys though, obviously :)
