The problem with typing in VR ...

The map cursor is a circle, and you have to tilt the galaxy plane to have it show up (iirc).

I think when I can't see the blue disc it is because the cursor is a lot further away than I thought and I'm zoomed out more than I thought. And when I zoom in and bring the cursor back to me, I often need to then translate up or down to get close enough.

But maybe it could be something as simple as being in "map" mode and having filters set so that you can't see some systems? Maybe check the filters or try "realistic" mode to have all the systems show up.

I was having major problems with the map in VR - moving off plane, and then looking for the little round circle as above helped me loads.
I would still like a quicker way of selecting things - and the system map are tough when you have to zoom out move and then zoom back in.
So when I'm in a system I use the Navigation pane and not the maps.

I often do have a problem selecting systems in the galaxy map. I can see the blue disc and navigate over to it, and I can "select" it and get the sound, but it is not highlighted and I can't navigate the UI for the system for selection, routing, bookmark, or system map. I need to back out and re-enter the map, and then it usually works. This just happened twice in a row, but it usually happens about 10-20% of the time. I have no idea why it does this - maybe something to do with the trigger on my joystick or just funky USB ports?

YES. In voice attack I make a command for "dictation" , which basically has a script to open dictation, then set a 4 second pause timer, and then to paste whatever has just been dictated. So when I'm in the in-game text chat window, I simply say "dictation" followed by whatever I want to say within 4 seconds, and voila it appears in my test chat box.
I also include in the script to say back some feedback to me like "you may commence dictation now" and "dictation stopped" to have an idea where the script actually is in real-time.
Also, I've made commands for "erase", "back" incase of errors. On top of that I also made commands for numbers and phonetics. For ex: "alpha" will spit out the letter A. This helps when voice attack is having trouble with dictating a specific word, so I just have it spell out. This works great too by the way when searching for a system in the galaxy map.
Also, realize you can train the windows speech software and add to the dictionary using your voice for the words having trouble being recognized. Voice attack uses what windows speech recognition software learns. At least this is the way for windows 10.

OMG Never knew this thank you so much rep given.

Was wondering about getting voice attack, i would probably never use it to control my ship because my HOTAS has all the commands at the touch of a button which I know where they are in even in VR. But keys on the keyboard are still a pain and searching on the galaxy map especially so.

Now I know Voice Attack can do this dictation command I have a good enough reason to invest in it.

Would be nice if we could use the Vive controller as a in game laser pointer in the galaxy map or even the pad on it to move and pan the map.

That's a great idea Tenshi, the Vive controller would make the G/map much easier to use in VR.

I've got the whole G/map icon circle thing worked out now, apart from getting it to select the system.
I've tried the space button & fire buttons, but no joy.....yet

I use the X55 HAT buttons to move the highlight across from the left hand side panel to the system select panel. The top HAT (the black one) I use to move left /right, up and down. The pinky on the throttle part moves the cursor back and forward while the HAT that use to control the head movements is now doing the pan command in the galaxy map. Main trigger is select just like left click on the mouse.

You just have to move the G/map icon circle thing to the star circle thing to snap them together so the star is selected, simple :)
At the end of my movie you see me do that.

you cannot get the system selected with the mouse. I navigate with the mouse very close to the star so the blue circle is very close to the blue dot of the star. Then I use the Joystick to pan left or right and it snaps. You need to set that axis on the joystick fot the G/Map
