The Psychology of a Terrorist - A question for SDC

OP. Members from SDC aren't terrorists, they're just a bunch of people playing computer games. It might be interesting know the average, median and mode age.

I can't comment on why they do it, but I can share why I did 4 years of griefing in WoW 7 years ago.

Reasons I did it
  • It made me laugh - sometimes, very, very hard; tears would run down my face, I sounded like a little girl when I spoke and I'd gasp for breath
  • It was fun
  • It could be challenging - knowing you were taking on more skillful / better geared players
  • Variety - I wanted to play WoW and had done everything else I wanted to do
  • 'Cos I could

  • It filled the time - sometimes I had to wait before a mate to logged on
  • Boredom - I played WoW even when I didn't want to play it
  • Addiction - It was the first thing I did in the morning, back from work and the last thing at night
  • I'd had it done to me over and over whilst I was leveling

Why I stopped

  • It was ultimately unfulfilling - First 100 griefs. Game on. Next 100? <mmm> Next 100? <yawn>
  • It didn't achieve anything either in game or in RL
  • It wasn't a challenge
  • I'm not a bully
  • I had nothing to prove
  • I wasn't behaving in a loving way
  • I matured and became less childish
  • What a waste of time

I could go on, but you get the idea.

Having hanged out with SDC regularly on teamspeak voicecomms, I can assure you there's no need to worry about anyone's mental health out of there.
On the other side, if a grown up man with kids gets angry about dying in a bloody videogame, I'd send him to a doc.

The anger is spawned not so much about the dying, but the time invested prior to dying. Every time I die in-game it makes me question whether I should be achieving something in real life instead.

I as some of you know I am CMDR Harry Potter, CEO of the Smiling Dog Crew(ISIS).I will do my best to explain why we do what we do and how.

We do what must be done to keep the balance in the game, a balance that must be kept to ensure the survival of the everyday PVPer, everyday a PVPer is abused on the forums needlessly! with that said it became clear that our struggle was one that should be fought with every last ounce of our strength as brothers of SDC, we would not live to see the world we build but we would die knowing we had a part in building it and this in itself is glorious.

See its only through our dedication to this "holy war" can we ascend to lordship, only through struggle and sacrifice will we attain our promised 7 god rolls.

To ensure we win this "holy war" we kill every living thargoid(Hollow-square) we can find no matter the rank or ship they use, we do this for the greater good, for all of us so that one day we can live under the rule of Lord Sundank himself!
That's nice :)

Now, how about a serious answer?

Sorry but I disagree. This is too convenient. Then you need to tell me where you draw the line. Videogame actions = not real. Discord statements = not real. Emails? Real? not real? SMS? Phonecalls?
Why are there laws against cyberstalking? If it's not in person, it's not real...

It makes no (or very little) difference what the medium is: it would take a seriously dissociated person to be able to keep up two or three completely unrelated personae (videogame, chatroom, real life...for ex.). That's just not what happens. And there's even psychological research that suggests that one's actions in virtual environments do depend on more generic personality traits.

That is exactly what I was saying in my previous posts. The players who cannot disconnect their real world life/personality are the ones who have such a hard time finding fun in games such as ED.

When you go onto a discord setup SPECIFICALLY as an extension of a game environment you are automatically extending the rules/conventions of said environment.

Now it would be different if say the SDC guys suddenly had access to a world wide message system like FB for eg and started posting some of the stuff they put up on there what is effectively as members club. That then brings it out into the public forum and will be judged upon by what society in general thinks as appropriate.

Yeh, cos pvp guys in general are known for their cool heads when it comes to unfair treatment. Lol. Thanks for the giggle.

Strawman. This thread is about SDC, not PVP community in general.
Though, to be honest, after leaving mobius and joining the PVP community I was hooked on the massive sudden jump in intelligence and self awareness of the people around me.

What if a grown up man with kids gets angry about someone disconnecting a bloody videogame?

From hanging out on the teamspeak channels and discords of pretty much all normal and well known PVP groups, I can assure you nobody is actually angry about people disconnecting.
In reality it's all laughing at the stupidity of loggers.

its valid... or would be if the pilots federation would remove all SDC members from their midst, losing them all privalages such as the remlok system, insurance as well as put insurance ajudicators onto their backs.

SDC should want nothing from the PF seeing as they consider all PF members their enemy.

2 out of 10, 1 for sounding like you're off your trolley, 1 for 'holy war', but needs more waaaaaah, and more cowbell.

I have a better idea, ask me any question I will do my best to answer. This might be a better idea since some of us have no idea why we just murder people.

Then go out and do something real and don't equate your life accomplishments to your progress in a game?

It seems you should be thanking the ones killing you in game as they are prompting you to better yourself, even if just that means bettering yourself in Elite, as every player encounter is a learning experience. You died, so how did you die and how do you keep it from happening again?

That was a very serious answer to be honest. It shows how SDC doesn't care about what you think and say about them, and play with you, the people. It was Harry trying to explain what he does in a style of his own, which shows how serious he is in griefing people.

I wouldn't argue with that, but you specifically people being angry about dying in a video game, which is patently inaccurate in the first place, what peeps object to is the loss of time and progress in a way they could (due to lack of skill, I grant you) not prevent. I simply pointed out that pvpers are an angry bunch too when you mess with their game and how they want to play it. What's the difference? :)

@OP, by making an entire thread spent on over analysing the situation and playing internet psychologist to the point of pedantry you are doing exactly what SDC wants to see. It really is as simple as that. They want to see a reaction and they know they'll get one. The bigger the over-reaction the better.

Rinzler himself explains the simple logic of it:

Deny them the reaction they want to see and you will frustrate them. Posting indignance and outrage at their obviously antagonistic actions and furthermore creating entire threads to disseminating their flame blaits only succeeds in giving them the reactions they wanted to see.

Have heard that argument before but don't buy it, if you find a game boring then why play it?

I have a better idea, ask me any question I will do my best to answer. This might be a better idea since some of us have no idea why we just murder people.

1) Is it true that SDC are adopting the role of an in game terrorist organisation?
2) How do SDC work as a group to define in game acts?
3) How did murdering someone in Beagle Point further your agenda?

So all the anger I'm reading on these forums with regard to combat logging is just acting. And it's really no big deal?

That's great to hear. It will save Frontier a lot of bother.

Will this be enough player kills to get my 7 god rolls?
