The push for two million

Just for update, week is around since publishing trailer, and there's have been pledges in total 25k. It's hottest week since end of KS (if I'm not mistaken). And we are just 27k away from 1.9M and 127k from 2M. Thanks everyone!

Just added at tenner to my pledge to reach the £90 mark so I get a limited boxed edition of ED. I've still got my boxed versions of Elite from 1984, and Frontier and FFE from '90s, so thought this would complete the set.

That's it for me though. I'm drawing the line at ninety quid, got to start saving for new laptop now!

I need a laptop too. I work away from home and am borrowing one at the moment.

PC Specialist ones look to be the right sort of price for me.

Not sure what your budget is, but I've got my eye on something like this...

http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/MSI_CX61_Haswell_1389669.html

or a cheaper alternative like this...

http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Toshiba_Satellite_Pro_C50-A-17H_1468971.html

The card isn't top end but looking at youtube vids it seems to run the Crysis engine on medium to high settings, the Crysis engine is what Star Citizen is using which is possibly more demanding than the Cobra engine Elite Dangerous is using. So unless things change, something like that laptop may be just about good enough for both games. Fingers crossed!

Nice!

Nice suggestion for a mid range laptop there Erimus - not bad value either. Personally though I would wait until ED is released before buying one as upgrading them can be very hard to impossible.

Also, before forking out money check here for GFX card comparisons - Some of the older cards are actually better than the newer (higher GFX chip number doesn't always mean better)

I have a similar MSI laptop, the MSI GE620DX, it has Core i7 (not Haswell), and NVIDIA Geforce GT635. Performance is pretty good. The only thing to get your head around with it is the dual graphics cards, the other card is Intel graphics (ie crap) but its good enough for day-to-day web surfing etc. You have to set up your programs in an NVIDIA control panel to use the more powerful card. When set up, it all works nicely.

One thing to think about though is its very power hungry. My laptop only lasts around an hour on battery, so I have to keep it plugged in most of the time.

That's "feature" with all these laptops with powerful graphics cards. Essentially it is meant that you do web browsing, email, etc. with Intel card while offroad, and play games with NVIDIA while plugged in.

Thanks for that  I'll hold off getting one until just before ED is released, as Liqua says there may be better options available around March 2014.

Do you use a laptop cooling pad with yours? Is that something else I should be looking into?

Also good thing would be check out power settings. While on battery set NVIDIA power mode to less hungry. Graphics will take slight hit, but battery life increases considerably.

Yes. Even though mine is broken (my cat chewed the cable off lol) I still use it to shield my legs from getting cooked.

Haha, I was thinking more about getting optimal performance from your computer, not roasting your chestnuts :p

I've heard its wise to get the right cooler pad for a laptop as some coolers blow air back into your laptop when your laptop is trying to expel the hot air out, so you're effectively stopping the hot air from escaping. And some coolers suck the air out, which is equally as bad if you have a laptop that's trying to draw cool air in. You need to get the right combo apparently :S
