The Ramblings of an Optimistic CMDR

I spent a good few hours on Odyssey on Saturday, meandering my way home from Colonia, (where I’ve been since before it dropped) checking out anything that I thought might be interesting, and I must admit, since Update 5 I’m really, really starting to enjoy it. I know the planetary geography ‘isn’t working as intended’, but I’ve found some beautiful areas so far, as well as a fair bit of new biological stuff and for me that’s been really cool. Some of the atmospheres and ‘sunsets’ have been breathtaking too. I’m about half way home now and starting to pick up the pace a little. I’m going to forgo planetary landings in favour of forward progress so I can see what’s happening on foot around the Bubble once I’m back. It’s been a few months since I was there.

The rumblings from many of the ED YouTubers and a lot of this community has understandably (up to a point) been getting more and more negative over the last couple of weeks with people like Hawkes, ObsidianAnt, Yamiks and others all claiming Elite is dying. I seem to remember a similar kind of discontent in the build up to Lavecon two years ago when there’d been not a lot happening for a while. Over the last couple of years though, there has been plenty of stuff happening, and from my (possibly naïve) perspective this now feels to me like the very shaky first footsteps of a potentially much bigger expansion than it currently is. I know the game wasn’t release-ready, and it’s going through damage limitation exercises at the moment, and Frontier haven’t been the best in communicating historically etc etc, but we all know that things will improve. They have already started to.

I just don’t get why, if those negative naysayers are so passionate about the game, they’re so ready to dismiss it, citing this (admittedly pretty significant) bump in the road as if it’s the final nail in the coffin of what is a still incredible, awe inspiring and beautiful game. Maybe it is that very passion and a feeling of being let down by the Odyssey launch, and FDev that’s making people feel so aggrieved, or maybe we’re all just a fickle bunch 😉.

To pick one bone of contention, the ‘ship interiors’ argument doesn’t feel a worthy reason to sound the death knell to me. I know they were initially spoken about as something that was coming (soon™) in the future, but as it is, we’ve never had them and yet we’ve managed to enjoy the game and build an amazing community around it. Now we have the much demanded Space Legs, and no ship interiors and people are throwing their toys out of the pram over it? There’s still a vast galaxy out there, and this is still a great community, but now with the addition of those all-important (to some) Space Legs to wander around on so you can punch unwitting Imperial Eagles to death.

My experience and musings will not be indicative of most Odyssey players, I get that. Being in Colonia when it dropped, never engaging in ground combat (there wasn’t much to be found out there and I’m not that bothered about it tbh), but that doesn’t mean I can’t see or experience some of the improvements that have been made so far. Since the updates my frame rates have been fine, but my VR headset has been pretty much dormant since Odyssey launched, and that really did affect my gameplay. I’ve adapted back to flatscreen for now and I’m happy to continue until VR whilst on foot is feasible again once the frame rates improve, which I'm sure they will. I had a break for a while and waited until the patches were applied so I could set off back home with the possibility of seeing some new things on the way. I'm glad I did, it's been worth it.

Everyone's experience of Elite will differ from the next person's, along with the reasons they play it, their style, goals and level of commitment, and this meandering post isn't at all meant to diminish anybody's version of that, positive or negative. Personally, I'm someone that has had an overwhelmingly positive experience both in the game and in the community and I guess I’m probably venting a little because I'm passionate about Elite and want to celebrate every step forward, rather than trying to hold it back with negativity. I have faith that some of us will look back in six months, a year, and celebrate how far Odyssey has come from it’s apparent rushed and difficult birth. I’ve not played anywhere near as much as many CMDRs, (3000hrs across few accounts/platforms), but I will have played a lot more than some. I’ve had many fantastic experiences, but I’ve still got so many things I’d like to do in the game. I’ll certainly be around for the next 3000hrs doing just that. Hope to see you out in the Black.

For me, the troubled release of Odyssey is like sitting at the bedside of an old friend who took a wrong step and ended up in intensive care.

I desperately want my old friend to get well soon, but until that happens, I know I'll probably have to help out with the bedpans now and then.

Oh I'm gonner cop it!
BUT
Once SC brings out a working vr flight model....??
Once there is an alternative that scratches the right itch I'm sure there will be a natural migration for many. Nothing lasts forever, otherwise I'd still be playing Elite and Manic Miner on my ZX Spectrum :D
Nothing has hit the sweet spot for me in any other game like Elite Dangerous has, and it'll take something very special to draw me away from it. Everyone is different though.

Agreed. But and I'm speaking for myself, SC does look good. Hell kates playing it!@
So if vr support does drop and I'm meaning elite style vr not emulated etc, along with final release ie no resets, I'm off

If they didn't hype for weeks prommising lots and lots of information coming at the end of june. Like everything will suddenly become clear - if all we had to do was wait until the end of June.

Well July came, everthing became clear - they got nothing. They tricked players in to buying Odyssey in this terrible state, and now working on Console, leaving PC players in the dust of broken promisses.

It's july 12th today still nothing. Things don't look bright, and patience is runing out...

I'm no expert
I've gamed for over 40 years now. And I've learnt a thing or 2.
How to get something to run propper. Might take me a few weeks but ;p I get there.
Hp reverb g2 and an oc 3060 and its perfect. Yup pixilated planet surfaces and other glitches.
But it renders gorgeously.
Last night after swapping out my 2060 (it's now on ebay) and jumping into an srv. I was able to run the buggers over on planet base missions..could not do that before cos of lag.

I get the limited info we got was not what we were hoping for, but I'd counter that it wasn't really 'hyped' and if by 'everything becoming clear' I don't recall them saying they were going to divulge everything that we can expect to see in Odyssey over the next few years, if that's what you mean? PC players haven't been left in the dust as we've had patches to fix many of the things that were undeniable broken, and work is still ongoing which we'll only benefit from in future. Whether that's optimisations when the console release drops or in further patches remains to be seen. I agree though, it wasn't handled particularly well at all.
What I would ask, is what kind of information were you anticipating? What was it that you didn't hear? There's been a lot more communication during the last few weeks from the CMs, either on these boards, or through Supercruise News for example. Some of it not to our liking, but it's been there.

The issue is that FD is very disconnected from what CMDRs in general want. Which is more connection to our ships, not gameplay added that is remotely related to our ships

No, we did not get the spacelegs that CMDRs in general wanted. We wanted interiors/boardings/eva/station &FC social hubs. Ie, we wanted legs to revolve around our ships and being CMDRs. Not a mediocre FPS from 2002 with a tiny pool of static cactii assets to become Elite ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ in staring at.

this was years in the making, surely you cant expect players to wait a few more years, to see if it possibly gets better with possibly more content?

I get your point, and this is me purely speculating here, but as I see it Odyssey and its FPS element was seemingly marketed to bring more new players to the game from wider genres (which it did) and is possibly being used as a starting platform to develop into offering some of the aspects you allude to for those 'CMDRs in general' you mentioned, the more seasoned players so to speak. Those developments wouldn't necessarily offer much to bring in newer players (keeping the game healthy and generating revenue) as they'd essentially be providing more interaction to existing elements that only existing players would fully appreciate, as opposed to the wider appeal those looking for more traditional and easier to conceptualise gameplay would want?

I think we forget sometimes how utterly impenetrable Elite can seem to those that haven't played it, and FPS is certainly something offering access into the game for players wanting to dip their toes in to that aspect first, followed (hopefully) by being blown away by the complexity and beauty of the galaxy we all inhabit as they expand into the more traditional game.

Again, just me speculating. I could be talking under the influence of too much onionhead. ;)

I don't see why people have issues when others are leaving. They likely have their reason, which might be anything from:

  • Not happy with the current performance of the game / amount of bugs in the game
  • Not happy with the direction the development of the game is going / expecting different gameplay.
  • Don't feel the current addition (FPS) are worth for them to pay for a DLC
  • Feeling missled by the FDEV and the communication about the state of the game and further development
  • insert point here

Some may come back, others not.
I personally don't care about the first person combat capture-the-flag minigames, so that's not a selling point for me, but if they get the planets working at a comparable performance to Horizons, I will give it a try.

Might be controversial, but I've been quite enjoying Odyssey so far.

It can be freaking frustrating at times with all the bugs ... my un-favourite new one is scavengers or npcs spawing 'below' the ground - but somehow they can still shoot you, but you can't get to them. Failed a fair few missions due to that.

But all in all, been enjoying modding my suits and weapons and increasing my stealth abilities taking down criminal factions.
