I wonder if mask wearing will persist in the West like it does in Hong Kong, once this is over?
Probably in some areas, like the cities maybe? Definitely on airplanes.
Asians have had a fetish, about wearing masks for decades. It is just like, a way of life, for them. (Now I am wondering if I am allowed to say that)

And to build on that, Asian cultures don't just have a 'fetish for masks', they more generally, and this sounds super alien and weird, value their health. Sure, that includes masks against smog, but it also includes weird stuff like effectively dealing with pandemics and generally trying to be fit and healthy.

No clue what is up with all of that...

Yeah it was great fun living in Japan for a few years. Everybody was smoking like chimneys, but it was very easy to eat a healthy diet (just stay away from ramen houses).

I think it'll be situational. If the vaccine gives long term immunity and we have good uptake of it and the virus doesn't mutate then no real need. But if we get a new version of covid every few years or keep the current version because of poor vaccine uptake and lax mask hygiene then it'll eventually become odd to go out without one.

Here's a piece about Asian mask wearing

- written in 2014

Frankly I'm unsure about mask wearing as a health benefit. In the direct sense and as it has been used in the attempt to control the COVID pandemic; yes, mask wearing is effective. But in what used to pass for normal times, I did not like the idea of mask wearing or indeed flu vaccinations (again, I'm all for flu vaccinations for people for which the flu could be very dangerous).

Why am I, an otherwise educated individual (or at least one that has spent an exhausting amount of time in schools), against these obviously effective means of viral control? I am against them when they are used as an excuse to get sick people out to work among other people. They should stay home, rest up and get well instead. Society should allow for that in addition to making vaccines available. A large part of the spread of this virus has been due to people thinking they could go to work while sick as they have always done.

That's kind of the issue with the flu vaccines. We have to guess what strains are dominant, and hope for the best. The only time I ever was flu vaccinated I got the flu. Still, the vaccines may be crucial to keep people safe that are otherwise susceptible to complications from coronaviruses.

I'm getting my flu shot tomorrow, hopefully for the right strain. Flu numbers are down though as covid infection control methods are also preventing flu spreading.

Influenza is notorious for mutation hence all the strains and vaccines, corona viruses mutate much more slowly so it's unlikely to ever be similar on the vaccine roulette front. As with the vaccine it's too early to tell really.

Plus: The authorities will ban them, as many did before the pandemic hit, as they were making it hard for the facial recognition systems, to work.

Nah, face masks are no problem with today’s machine learning!

I don’t know if it’s a cultural thing but I’ve only been buying and taking vitamin pills since January when the virus became a threat.
I’d always considered my diet sufficient but in hindsight I doubt that.
It was a surprise to me the first time I visited America and saw the inside of a vitamin supplement stocked bathroom cabinet; although I’m sure there’s plenty of full bathroom cabinets here in the uk too, it shocked me at the time that it seemed fine to be taking all these pills. I guess some moderation and knowledge is the sensible thing.

Denmark has (or had) a law against covering your face. It was usually 'just' an issue for more orthodox Muslim women, but it also meant you couldn't go around town dressed up as, say, Darth Maul. I wonder if facial mask wearing will be an issue under that legislation when this crisis blows over and the new normal arrives.

For yourself: I would say that it is a belt and braces, thing.

If you think about it. Most Americans if they could afford it, would have been in therapy, of some kind, since before the 1970s. Culturally, it is the land of hypochondriacs.

I do think it amusing, that everyone can walk the streets these days, with a completely covered face and no one will bat an eyelid. If I tried that two years ago, in the U.K. I would have been justifiably been stopped, under the stop and search laws.

Stuff changes, a few generations ago it was considered indecent to go outside without your hat or to be able to see the legs of a table.

Well one of those three things is in response to a deadly global pandemic and matters to everyone whereas the other two only matter to nerds and orthodox Muslims respectively.

So switching back could be justified by the absence of the first one given a return to old normal.

Of course one may disagree with old normal.
