The scale is sometimes really mind-boggling...

No that wouldn't cut it either.
The thing that makes Elite look huge in VR is that you feel 'in' the environment, not looking though a window at it. (even if it's a 50+ inch window)

Someone was mentioning the vulture cockpit looking bigger, I've actually been able to walk round my Asp-E one and look down the ladder to the crew seat below.

Can't do that in my anaconda, I bump into real walls 😕, that really does look the size of a large apartment, it's bigger than any room in my house.
😊

True, I loaded the normal none version a few days ago, was the first time in 3 years. Completely understood what everyone had been saying about scale, it felt like it was a miniature version of reality, very strange. Non VR users should really give it a try once, the fact that you are in the Elite universe at 1:1 scale really brings home the sheer size of these ships/ports/planets/stars.

@Op - VY Canis Majoris or Betelgeuse 2 is definitely something to see. Mt Neverest is also mind blowing in VR, in fact the whole damn game is, main reason I still keep coming back for more.

It would help. But I agree that VR is the proper way to go to see scale in the game.

You want to know mind boggling....when I was young I lived in the countryside of Cornwall in a house that was at least 2 km from the nearest street light. my dad and I was laying on the lawn one night and he pointed up to the endless sky and said "You see that little pinpoint of light there?...that's not a star...that's an entire galaxy"

That's when I learned my place in the universe.

I was playing Elite on the ZX Spectrum at the time.

Having made a few jumps this morning, how about this for an idea - have the ship drop in at 1.3 light seconds from the surface of the star.

I’d hope most players of this game have seen the Apollo 8 photo of Earthrise from the Moon, so there would be an immediate scale reference in mind.

How many Earths could you fit side-by-side across the star you’ve just arrived at? Usually, lots. Sense of scale accomplished!

I’d also like to see our hyperspace tunnels drop us at the same distance from the surface of the star, so the really big ones will look really big.

At the moment most stars look the same size to me when arriving at them, even in VR.

Totally agree with this. As with planets, I feel FD could make much more of the scale. They have it all built in, they could make it more apparent. There’s a line in 2001 (A.C.Clarke) about being in orbit around Jupiter, and it’s so big it is all the pilots could see out of one side of the ship, it blocked out ‘space’.

It would be nice to have this sense of awe more apparent in the game, to reaffirm the vastness of space and our tiny place in it.

I don’t mind having to fly for longer round a star/planet/gas giant, although I understand that FD probably had to make many judgement calls of Reality Vs Gameplay to get ED to where it is.
