Shadowbanning has been confirmed: you are such a complete jerk that you get to play on your own special server away from the normies. According to the newsletter, it's an intermediate step between a simple warning and an outright ban.

So, curious minds want to know:

Is the shadowban server faster than the regular one? If so, can we get on it by asking or do we have to be bad people?*
Can I get shadowbanned without warning? If so, how will I know I've been shadowbanned?
What (typically) would get one warned versus shadowbanned? Is there a 1-2-3 strikes thing?
Will forum activity contribute to a shadowban? Is there a shadowban forum?
Are there shadowban appeals?
Can't I just buy another account and get around the shadowban - hello deep STEAM sale!
Is there a list of shadowbanned accounts we can see?*
Although the shadowban server has no connection to the "background simulation", can shadowbanned players still participate in Community Goals, Wings, and Powerplay?

* In these cases, I'm wondering about friends where one gets shadowbanned and another does not. Maybe those friends want to play together?

I look forward to your informed replies as well as knee-jerk reflex reactions. If there's any other questions regarding shadowbanning that I haven't thought of, be cleverer than me and post them.

Sounds like a great idea, not sure why it wasn't introduced earlier. GTAV Online has always had it, only difference is everyone on the server has to wear a dunce hat, all the cheaters can hang around on the same server blowing each other up all day long. Let the rest of us get on with it

According to what I've read, and some guesswork...

The Shadowban server would be like a Beta server.
You would be informed by FD when you get put there.
Anything you do in there has no effect on the background simulation (and assume that means community goals, etc.).
Shadowbanned players in there can see other Shadowbanned players, but not regular players. And regular players can't see Shadowbanned players.
Why would you want to intentionally go there?

2) Probably; The only other players that you will meet are also shadowbanned;

6) I would not expect Frontier to advertise who has been shadowbanned.

If people want to play together then it is incumbent on each of them to not get shadowbanned, i.e. don't cheat / combat log / etc.

Well, 1) if it is a faster server...

But also 2), the point I made about friends. Maybe in a perfect world, all your friends are in line for sainthood. On Earth in 2015, there are all kinds of people, roughly divided into Good and Bad. Sometimes, you'll have friends who do Bad things, sometimes they do Good things. Very few people can be just Good or Bad 100% of the time. But let's say the Shadowban Police deem you or your friend Bad. Perhaps you deserve it, too, although like I said, everyone isn't 100% good or bad 100% of the time. Yet now the divide between good and bad is real and enforced. You have a friend you play with all the time, but now one of you is shadowbanned. Wouldn't you still want to play with that friend? Friends have each others' backs. That's what friendship is about - not counting the weaksauce facebook version of friendship.

3) Maybe you are Good 100% of the time, it's not impossible. So you feel so strongly about your beliefs that Judge MacGruder-like, you decide to take The Long Walk into the Cursed Earth and bring The Law to those who do not have it. Or maybe you're so twisted with hate and revenge that you need to climb into the shadowban to exact fiery retribution.

Those are the reasons I can think of to want to be shadowbanned. I'm sure there's others.

As for not having any effect on the background simulation, I'm still unclear on that. Personally, I don't have much care where system X belongs to the Empire, Alliance, or Federation. But if I can make 10 million golden pazoozas killing rebels, well, that's hard to resist. If I'm in shadowban, my actions won't crush the rebellion in the background, but I still do get my 10 mil?

I'm wondering if the shadowban won't collect peoples from certain geographic communities. I'm not going to say "racial profiling", but I have to be concerned that this could happen. Frontier isn't impartial, after all, although it looks like they are trying to be at least.

First one: yes there is a 3 Strike system ;)

Second one: I think so, would be lame if not.

I'm not a fan of these artificial parallel worlds. Why create a sin bin server that may well need dev support, time, and resources to maintain? Why not either temp ban players for a week, or if that's too harsh create penal colonies in the gameworld we all share and transport cheaters to those?

Penal colonies are systems where players are given a non-hypespace capable relic shuttle and tasked to ferry biowaste or rotten fish around the various outposts until their debt is paid. If FD really want to be sadistic they could have some repeat offenders sentenced to a days hard labour.... 24 game hours mining bauxie. Given 'em a set quota to meet before their debt to society is paid :p

I still think that the best penalty for the worst offenders should be being stuck in a system surrounded by neutron stars if... IF you can get out of it in one piece you get a reprieve otherwise you get to spend the rest of your days (read fuel tank) sitting still surrounded by very dangerous neutron degenerate matter.

Having thousands of hours in FSX, I can tell you that I welcome flying a shuttle around! The flying and landing is my favourite part of Elite! Being banned to fly a shuttle would mean I get to practise FA off a lot more, which would be awesome!

Personally, I don't think shadowbanning is all that bad a solution to the problem of players who don't want to play by the rules. However, the enforcement system is obviously unclear at this point. That seems irresponsible. It's like playing chess with someone who changes the rules of what happens when the pieces are eliminated, except that you paid 60 clams in real money for the opportunity to play. Once things become clearer, then maybe we can be happier.
