Modes The Solo vs Open vs Groups Thread [See new thread]

So play solo but don't take your solo (easier) achievments (money, ships) to open play later to be a super player who's got everything that's what i mean.

Lol that's funny, I played open nearly all of Beta & most of gamma (except buggy times), I only left because I decided there were people I would rather not spend my free time with after seeing them on the forum. I have an Asp & 10 mill, even though the last month or more was in "easier" mode, I am not slaying Condas galore in open using my easy mode Asp, it is my only ship, I don't have a fleet.

Please do tell me why you find this to be such a big problem that you feel the need to change the game, the game I bought 6 months ago & am happy with because you didn't research it first & I did.

FD never hid the fact that you could change modes to avoid *AHEM* "people" if you want to, the time to comment was back in the DDF stage, the devs have said its not going to change, its part of the design, it always has been. I understand you don't like it but you bought it, I bought it and I do like it, its what I expected after researching it a bit first.

<grins> Life in Solo is harsh! No wings or pals to help - you're on your own!

Yeah those people in open mode with their wing mates helping them, damn cheats using those intended features, I hope they can't bring their cheap, easily earned (backed up by 3 mates) credits in to solo mode or groups and abuse things, solo players don't even get AI wing mates, I might have to go into open mode & cheat a bit until I have enough credits to survive in solo :D

The reasons I play Solo -

- I want to get a handle on my ships before I play against somebody who knows the game inside an out. Given how the Dunning-Krieger effect works, I will learn nothing from the defeat unless I understand how the game works first.

- I'm an Introvert and deal with lawyers all day as part of my job. While I'm good at my job, it drains a man and you need time to yourself to recharge.

- I don't want to deal with the "umad I ganked you" crowd most days. I know that's not everybody.

Now, the day may come where I may decide to give PvP a try, but I sure as <that hot burning place> ain't starting over. I might bring in a sidewinder or eagle starting out, but I ain't starting from the bottom in terms of credits. I did that schtick in Eve and decided it wasn't for me. And to be quite honest, I probably wouldn't have tossed down my 60 dollars of hard-earned cash on this game if it didn't have the solo option.

Not to mention, I want to see the game succeed - we've had a rather large drought when it comes to viable space dogfighting games for way too long, I want to see this genre expanded. That isn't going to happen if this game doesn't succeed. And the hardcore PvP crowd? I'm sorry guys, but you're a minority. Consentual PvP is much easier to sell to the masses than Surprise pvp. You're fooling yourselves if you think otherwise.

I play solo most of the time. There is no point to Open. No group content. Everything can be and should remain possible in solo as well as open, even after wings. Arguably everything thats being toted as new and improved shouldve been tested in Alpha or Beta and already ingame. Who markets a game as an MMO before they even have proper chat and grouping?

The only time ill opt for Open is if FD pull a fast one and force us to do so for some malignant reason.

Maybe I'm missing something, having never played solo play. I've been on the fringes of occupied space for over a week, and haven't seen a player since. Given the size of the Galaxy, why would FD even add a solo play option?

Are people just too lazy to leave the starting systems?
Bought the game.
Launched from starting station at LHS 3447.
Got blown up by some player camping just outside the station... 6 times.
Went solo.
Playing in solo ever since, if there were offline single player, i would play that instead.
ZERO PUNCTUATION said:
I get quite enough grief from all the NPC ships, thank you very much.

I'm one of those solo/group/all players who doesn't give a hoot about what anyone else thinks about the way I play the game.

I trade in open and explore in solo. PvE group when I fancy meeting other players on a friendly footing.

Still not made more than £2m in cash and also have my original ship. (I don't grind, so potter about doing whatever I fancy, setting my goals on a week by week basis)

Play the way you want to play. If someone else doesn't like it that's their problem.

Right. Now I've got that sorted out, I reckon the mods can close this thread! :D

Oh so it looks like i buyed space truck simulator ? Not an Elite Dangerous space adventure sandbox game ?
There should be Solo Play, Open Play and a Space truck simulator option for you loud cryiers...

Look at official ED page:
http://www.elitedangerous.com/about/playyourway/

a small quote from official description of game:

That's what i bought and since beta i'm trading, bounty hunting, pirating, mining, freelancing and fighting with players few days ago i lost Imperial Clipper (trade eq A3 shield) with cargo in fight with Elite Python 3 hours after this i lost ship again with cargo cause i thought i can win with a pirate player in ASP and i'm not crying out loud...

things should look like this:
Open Play - Piracy should have more penalty same for PK (i'm doing both sometimes when we want to have revolution in system)
Solo and Group - should have penalty to gained money as it's easier to get rich in this modes and shouldn't give possibility to affect market and fractions by your actions

And it is a spirit of the game. A bit of risk, a little unknown. Exploring, trading, fighting, winning and loosing.

Is this discussion still ongoing? I think we should work out a way to harness this thread to produce an infinite source of renewable energy.

lots of reasons all been covered in this monster of a thread but a few highlights

1) Technical....... The game was meant to have an offline mode for those with terrible internet. This has gone, but solo online still uses V little data so you can play tethered to a phone if you like and it barely costs any bandwidth. I myself have benefitted when my internet is playing up or when I am out and about. Not all of us are always at home when we want to play.

2) Enjoyment.... Not everyone wants even the chance to meet other people, for those not interested in competative gaming humans are just as likely to spoil a game as enhance it, but FD promised to leave the door open for those players should they change their mind, or, should they want to socialise with mates from time to time when gaming.

3) unlike other games, ED is such an insane time sink assuming you want to reach elite and the expensive ships, that multiple game slots something many would not be interested in (not directly relevant to your question but just pre-empting the "well lock your game to solo" comment)..

I play this game for my own entertainment not any other be it a pirate or player killer who needs someone to "interact" with. if i feel i need a pvp challenge il go open, bringing the ship i feel il have the most fun in. be it a D rated viper, T9 or a A rated anaconda.

We each have a degree of free will, lets use it and accept, others doing the same.

That bot gave me nightmares in ways the Terminators only wish they could have.

It was because it never said anything and it was unpredictable. You never knew if it was going to razor out your insides or serve you tea.

Bit like this thread. Anyway, if the bot gives you nightmares then don't listen to this. The brilliant new (old) John Barry theme song for the Solo/Open thread. The journey that starts where all things end...

+1

Shame it goes over the heads of some :(

And it is a spirit of the game. A bit of risk, a little unknown. Exploring, trading, fighting, winning and loosing.

So make game more grindy for me because I do not feel like being your little target practice?
And deny me having my own tiny footprint in the world?

Penalize me for not wanting to have anything to do with ats and I start to lose interest in the game, simple as that.

I stop having fun => I stop playing => I stop contributing cash to ongoing existence of the game.
There are huge number of people like me, so hurting our gaming experience can lead to game going bust.

You guys have game you desire out there, it is called Eve Online and it is total cesspool, or was last time I played it and I doubt there will ever be change on that.

Yes. this is turning into a kindergarten playground. kids trying to make rules on how we are supposed to play.

What's most troubling to me is people's lack of vision on this topic. You clearly don't understand what's lost when you let people selectively choose when and where they want to face adversity.

You know the endless threads about how the game is dull and lifeless? This topic is one of the biggest reasons why they exist. Maybe you don't have experience playing multiplayer games, maybe you simply lack the ability to see the larger picture, who knows.

So much was lost when they decided to let people go ghost mode at will. If you can't understand that, you probably never will. You may as well let people disable hostile npcs...

Personally I would say the big picture is mode swapping is an advertised feature of the game, promised since 2012.

I agree someone is refusing to "see" the big picture, by buying a game with features which clearly offend them so, I just disagree with who is it who is being blind.

According to Steam WarThunder is my highest logged game, and at a guess BF4 is my 3rd most played PC game of current times (neither hold a candle time wise to Elite), and I put 35 DAYS into Gears of War 2, and I dare say a similar amount into Gears 3.

So I would say I am fairly experienced in MP games

Believe me. I have a chance to kill others alltime. I have car, i can just drive in a bust stop and get a 10 frag combo, get reverse, get forward and get another 10 frags. I can play in War thunder or battlefield if i want to do it without penalty... or Star Citizen Arena commander if i want more killing in space...

You do not know me, you do not know my preferences, my person and my gamestyle. So why you judge me? Get judge yourself.

Elite is last game where i want to kill other players. I am not a killer, both in real life and in computer games.
However i would like to play a game with a bit of risk, with players and sometimes versus players, not a space truck with happy space family.

If you want to show some points you can do it without attacking me. I am not your enemy, i do not want to kill you in game. Relax man.

a joke or stupid? RL = Game is the same for you...
For the End with the community Goals alive many pirates look around for victims at the hotspots and without group/solo you will talk an other story after Xy strike vs. other players. Than you will talk about "the rules of the game and that PvP is ok , because enabled, and that its only game" If you dont want kill others Players what your problem with group/solo? You can only play with 32 players at the same time.

Are you suggesting this is a well designed multiplayer game?

If so, well, you are entitled to your opinion. It's been kind of a disaster on that front so far though.

Again, some players for whatever reason are putting avoidance of danger over everything else. You guys are missing out big time by letting your fears be the dominant factor in how you play. Easy and predictable might simply be your cup of tea I suppose and I guess that's okay.

It's the unexpected that you're missing out on. That's what was lost by letting player choose when and where they want to be in danger.
