It's just crazy that these are the types of conversations that we keep having about SC. I mean, it's a space game, right? Or is it just a game about buying concept ships?

All these years and we've got is one big pie in the sky dream, a few disjointed and half-baked tech demos, a stable of concept ships without gameplay attached, a mountain of technical debt, and thousands of videos/commercials/interviews/filler on YouTube.

Just saw this. What baffles me is the disclaimer. Is that still neccessary? Or can we call a spade a spade now?

But, while doing that, very slowly, are they not? I mean, the following below IS in existence.

- Dogfighting and FPS are being tested
- Flight mechanics are being tested
- Fuel economy is being tested
- Trade and shop mechanics are being tested
- Basic mission structure is being tested
- Custome missions : People can set up beacons and create "taxi" missions when stuck
- Cargo loading is being tested
- Vehicle transportation is being tested (official and just if it's possible)
- Procedural planets and planetary flight is being tested
- Ground vehicle mechanics are being tested (or just fooling around on the ground with Cyclones and Ursa's)

To a degree.

And to a greater degree, it is wasted effort because it is built on an engine that isn't finished, using game systems that are half complete and destined to change with the entire system based on design work that hasn't been done.

It doesn't help when CIG are - as an example - alternatively happy with the existing flight model, believe it is OK but needs a few tweaks or (as I've seen one dev state recently) is a placeholder awaiting major work and updates.

So the other 300 guys are working on jpegs and pr then?

CIG has, last I heard, about 500 employees.

How many are devs? Programmers? Artists? PR and marketing staff? Community mangers?

The only people who really "matter" here are those who actually code the game. Those who create the mechanics, the gameplay. CIG might have plenty of artists, but when people say CIG has 500 employees, they might only have 300 "devs" and even then, many of those might be art guys or sound guys rather than guys who work on the engine or flight model.

500 sounds like a lot, but get rid of the support and auxiliary staff and that number soon starts to fall.

One reason why SC is in trouble is because CIG doesn't have enough staff to support AAA development....but too many to support "normal" development. They are getting the costs of a large staff, but little of the benefit because they lacks the depth and experience and specialisations that comes with numbers.

A certain Warlord is putting it about that CIG has only $9m left in tangible assets and is on the verge of bankruptcy.

I can't decide wether that is tragic, inevitable, surprising, too late or simply lulzworthy.

As always with things CIG - we'll just have to wait and see what actually happens. Best grab a bucket though :D

It wouldn't be surprising. I've seen reasonable estimates that suggest everything from already run out to about $40 million left. It depends on how you value certain aspects.

I'd have estimated up to $30 million but I always try to be conservative.

He may have info we lack, but $9 million seems plausible but so long as the backers are willing to throw money at the project, that's enough of a buffer for a couple of years.

If it is true.....well, SC is dead unless they get a new revenue stream or the fundraising picks up. They need more than a couple of years to fix things.

Well they have finally got a launcher that allows for incremental downloads! YaY!

Unfortunately, after the download, it feels like they have less than what they had over a year and a half or so...

Now there are rumors of them running out of money? Truly a sad state of affairs!

The $9m is out of left field, that's not something that's been floating about. To be serious for a second there have been departures this year and more rumoured. But if Derek doesn't back that up he'll be dropping something of a bombshell into livelihoods for no reason.

Will he back it up?

This is gripping stuff.

Being a backer and having the pleasure of reading this thread for what seems like a decade. I conclude it was the best 35 quid I have ever spent, and I have had about 5 mins flight time in my Auora .

Oh definitely - when it comes to filling lulzbuckets and providing endless hours of unintended entertainment - Star Citizen certainly punches far above it's weight. Some of the giggles CIG have produced are worthy of legend.

He should stop making those posts; it just spurs the whales into donating more organs.

Then again it seems like CR is starting to cannibalise them too so it might not matter anymore.

You know I've had more fun playing his games than I ever have in Star Citizen. Yes people it's official uncle Derek actually has made a better game than Mr Crobber. Subjective and potential bovine plop, I know.

A certain warlord has made more predictions than Old Mother Shipton. He's going to get something right purely based on chance.

In this case, it wouldn't surprise me, but it would surprise me if Derek has a source that could actually give him that information. My guess is this information came from the same nether region that most of his predictions come from.

Woah, that's rather critical from BNB.
