The Star Citizen Thread v9

A lot of things break with the mobiglass, starting with the mobiglass itself.
I have a slightly different list of things that are not working i'll highlight some random (OTOH) differences:

You just don't understand game development!

- Doors still show a lot of glitches with maps and random polygons appearing or disappearing

Doors in Star Citizen are so high-poly and stuffed with fidelity that your GPU isn't capable of rendering them.

- Physic grid transitions are still a huge mess, they can kill characters, fling them into orbit, etc.

Physics grids are tuned to perfection. Newtonian mechanics are completely implemented. It's just perceived as bad.

- Jittery physics with ships that weight a few grams (see them flipping around after landing on a rock..) or same for vehicles (like big 4x4 rovers just flipping over too)

Gravity is implemented in 64 bit fidelity. You are only used to analogue gravity.

- Oh and speaking of vehicles, Nox is utterly broken (does whatever it wants but certainly not hover), Retaliator cannot even fly anymore...

Flight and hover are currently undergoing rework and the final go/no-go from Genuine Roberts, as soon as the required pixels are made green or blue.

- Ships still appear without doors or equipment after spawning

Did you buy doors and equipment for those ships?

- People falling through the floor at random locations, then through the planet itself, or doing 3 meter high jumps without effort (such realism !) but falling from a few centimeters but with a map transition will break their legs...

Sandwurmie nests are not to be trifled with lightly. Hidden spring traps are part of the visceral FPS combat more lethal than CS. You need a rogue in your party to properly find, warn of, and disarm such things.

- and yeah missiles are utterly broken...

Missiles are implemented perfectly and have been in-game for years. You simply cannot appreciate the magnificence of their design.

Buy an Idris!

[h=1]Personally I m not sure what CiG could possibly market at this point.

Pets. They haven't hyped that at all yet, and its one of their stretch goals.

Tell everyone they are working on pets now and throw some JPGs of pets in the store.

That's easily another 50 million in funding there.

Anything related to land claims... I'm sure Hurston and Loreville were made priority for this. Condos, furnitures, you name it.

Yup, been saying this ever since they introduced land claims. Sooner or later they will add prefabs purchasable for real world money, and its going to earn them millions.

If SC development is slow or delayed it's because Chris Roberts is a "perfectionist", if any other does the same it's because "the devs are lazy".
Frontier is "slow," but they also put out buggy, shoddy, low-rent results. Low res textures, outdated game engine, graphical downgrades with each iteration, low detail, cut-paste art assets, half-realized game mechanics, and giant obnoxious glaring inconsistencies in the implementation and integration of every feature. And they call it "done". That's why they'll never be accused of perfectionism. And Braden certainly isn't going to be called a perfectionist given that he's handed the game off to other people and is essentially MIA as far as Elite is concerned.

Meanwhile everything about Star Citizen is either top-tier amazing or else absolutely completely unuseably broken, which perversely makes it easier to forgive the shortcomings even while it's less fun to play. When something doesn't work well or doesn't look right (or is outright missing) in Star Citizen, it's because hey they're still working on it and they haven't got it right quiiiiiiite *yet*. CIG doesn't put up a wall of silence when something is broken nor do they claim that something is "done" or "working as intended" when it clearly is not. When something doesn't work well in Elite it's because the devs thought it was "good enough" or else just ran out of time, money, or patience and decided to push it out the door. And that's the end of it. Which can be tremendously frustrating.

I'm not going to claim that SC is on track to amount to anything at the rate (and direction) they're going, but it's not hard to see why their slow development is characterized as perfectionism; they are continually overhauling, expanding, and refining every aspect of their game, to the point of self parody. It *is* perfectionism, which in popular consciousness is sometimes mistaken for staggering artistic genius, but in almost all cases is a recipe for disaster and stems from arrogance and a deep fear of being judged. Chris Roberts is profoundly lucky to have been kicked off of every major project he's ever been in charge of going all the way back to the original Wing Commander, otherwise he would never have enjoyed his reputation as a game design genius which allowed him to fund Star Citizen in the first place. If he continues to be lucky, he'll be forced out of this project and whoever takes over will deliver a scaled down MVP version of whatever SC is supposed to be, and he'll once again be hailed as a hero.

You haven't been paying attention to CIG's track record, have you? [haha]

Their strategy is to put up a wall of “it's pretty much done, maybe some tweaking down the road” and never deviate from that until they change it, at which point it was horribly broken before, but this time “it's pretty much done, maybe some tweaking down the road.” At no point do they actually produce anything that could be confused with perfectionism — it's never top-tier or amazing, just late, and usually absolutely completely unusably broken on top of that.

Rather, the claims for perfectionism is just an excuse for tardiness with nothing to show for it — one cheered on by the main tardy person himself. His reason for tardiness has never been perfectionism (because it has always been rather low-quality) but rather indecision, inattentiveness, and inability to actually stay the course, all of which are almost the complete antithesis to that supposed quality. Always chasing the newest thing rather than actually sticking around and honing the old to perfection.

Is there something wrong with the way SC determines frame rate, in the top right display? Has anything like that been reported? After a recent chat in this thread, I loaded SC up to notice that I, too, apparently get 80-120 [reported] frames per second, yet it still runs like junk. It says 80, or whatever, but still jumps around enough to look worse than games locked to 60/Vsync (which also looks bad in SC). I don't have the technical knowledge around this to make any real assessment, so I thought I would ask.

This is rather selective recall if you ask me. CIG have repeatedly gone radio silent when they've missed release dates, ie Star Marine May 2015 or 3.0 Dec 2016 or Squadron 42's roadmap Jan 2018 etc
We've also had comments like Star Marine already being in the game...

Talking about that other game, if large amounts of 2018's content was about revisiting and building on core aspects of the game how can it be the end of it? That makes no sense whatsoever.

Might be worth trying MSI Afterburner for a comparison.

They were talking about that at CitizenCon weren't they? You'll be able to buy a condo, but a penthouse will cost more. They even looked up at the hab block when walking around outside and said 'that's where they are - that building'. They have it all planned ;)

Also: fishing.

No, not whale fishing, I mean the outdoor activity. In fact, I'm almost shocked they haven't gone there yet. It's probably the most classic in-game minigame and can be implemented from dumb (click, wait, click again when it's bobbing, get RNG fish) to high end (choice of hook, weights, lure, fish behaviour modeling, mouse gestures for line handling, etc) with everything in-between, and gives people something to do when there's nothing to do. I should know, I love in-game fishing as silly as it might be, from the dumb LotRO implementation to the fancy ones like Ice Lakes or the aiming-based Warframe spear fishing. And SC being SC you'd imagine they'd implement (or, well, promise at least) float fishing, lure fishing, spear fishing, bow fishing, underwater speargun fishing, etc. Heck, they could sell fish trawler JPGs and have a box of fish delivery mission tied to it. As for the commercial/marketing side, well, just have a look at the available dedicated fishing games on pc: 99% are online multiplayer games riddled with microtransactions, so well, in addition to mmo fishing being a proven time-sink, there seems to be a market for it too.

Well, in that case, why not interior decorating as well? They could literally sit watching paint dry! Untold levels of immersion and fidelity right there!

Ah, nothing like separating the real world haves from the real world have nots.

"Elevate yourself above the hoi polloi with this penthouse suite in Lorville! No need to mix with the poor people any more! This apartment surely punches above its weight! It can be yours today* for the low price of $10,000!

* - pending actual implementation in game"

You're joking but, well, there's a reason every mmo and its dog implements (or keeps being harrassed to by its player base) housing. People like that stuff, and that opens an entire new category of things you can use as rewards or in-game purchases (or cash-store exclusives): extra rooms, furniture, wallpapers... That said, SC arguably already has this with ship interiors.

It might not be your thing, but housing and fishing are common mmo tropes for a reason.

Well...they have aquarium fish...and utilizing a ship mounted 40mm high powered railgun to fish with would be kind of fun...Would be more skill based than waiting for the fish to take the bait.

I do find the idea of having an apartment in a condo and having to commute to the starport each day slightly odd. I had sort of imagined that player characters would live in their ships. Sort of like Han Solo.

But perhaps some folk prefer to be based in port. And if your ship gets blown up and you can't afford the insurance, perhaps you'll end up working as a hired hand for other players until you.can get back on your feet. A cosy brownstone would be just the place for the disenfranchised ex-ship-owner.

I would say this could be a choice.

With a large enough ship you can live on the ship and only stop temporary in cities to load up supplies while smaller ship owners need an apartment since their small attack ship lacks any kind of living space.

*looks at his super rare achievement of catching a 3 star legendary fish in FFXIV, while decorating his persistent neighborhood garden* I have no idea what you are talking about :D
