The Supercruise interface should be part of the ship's HUD.

EDIT: Ignore this whole thread. I completely misunderstood how this works.

We generally control the ship (as you'd expect in an Elite game) using its (in-game) HUD. The exception is the Supercruise interface, which just appears on-screen, undermining emersion.

Supercruise only has a handful of states:
  • Disengaged.
  • Engaged (but inactive, due to misalignment).
  • Active (ship is navigating to the target).
  • Syncing (entering orbit).
  • Orbiting.
There's already an INFO panel that contains icons, and can log text messages, and the five Supercruise states are mutually exclusive, so only one icon would need to be rendered at a time.

Thank you for your consideration (assuming the devs ever read any of this).

I have no idea what you are talking about, unless you are talking about SCA, which really has nothing to do with Supercruise.

You're right. Sorry. I'm new to the game, and misunderstood how something worked. I came back to delete the thread, but you commented now, so I'll just edit it.

That's ok, I had some really silly ideas when I first started playing and may even have made a fool of myself several times on the forum.....may...., but I can't remember the times...nope, no memory at all....none whatsoever!

@Bottom Hat, I thought the messages that appear in the centre of the screen (Supercruise Assist Active, Entering Orbit et cetera) were just written on the screen (and not part of the ship's HUD), and thought they should be integrated into the INFO panel. When I looked around (in the game), I saw that those messages are part of the ship's HUD after all.

I still think those kinds of messages should have been integrated into the INFO panel (so you'd have an icon representing the current state of the Supercruise Assistant in the INFO bar, and any corresponding textual messages appended to the INFO log), but it's a bit of a lost cause (and would need thinking through in more detail, as there are other similar messages unrelated to the Supercruise Assistant).

While that's a reasonable idea, one of the problems is the number of things I have seen requested to be put in the info bar on the HUD would soon make it unusable for any purpose at all if they were all implemented, and my usual response to the that is, make a case where your need becomes a) superior to the needs of other players and b) vital to the operation of the ship.

That not being true and all ideas and suggestions being equal we should leave it as it is and let FDEV decide what goes there because a game designed by a committee who only meet on a forum has different members every time it meets isn't going to work at all!

@varonica - True. You're right, of course. It was always a pretty ambitious request, especially from a new player, and I should've thought it through properly.

In any case, there's a bug with custom controls (on XBox, and presumably PlayStation), where bindings overlap in ways they shouldn't, greatly limiting the possible permutations. Getting that fixed seems more realistic, and would be much more practically beneficial than tweaking the HUD.
