They are also switching Captain America's skin colour (another superhero will pick up the shield). I find that more acceptable than this continuing dismantling of Nordic mythology. Thor is a son of a God. That's his name. You cannot just suddenly have the guy say that "Nah, I was Thor for long enough" and give the hammer and name away to someone else.

It should be mentioned, that Marvel have not said Thor will change sex, so this is to be a different character becoming Thor.

And, yes, Thor is to be replaced by another character whose name will suddenly and quite inexplicably switch to Thor. Apparently, Marvel decided that the name is no longer a name, but a title that can be transferred...
in the Mavel universe, Thor is whoever can pickup Mjolnir - in the comics, Thor has already been a woman, a Frog and an alien Horse..
Loki's been in a female form before though. That's how Sleipner came to be if I made my Knowledge Norse Mythology roll.

This is just a desperate attempt by Marvel to create a marketable female character.
I just wonder why they make these obviously temporary switches. If I remember correctly, there's a Marvel character called Cyf that they could have frontlined - even by making her the central character in upcoming Thor comics - without having to make up the silliness with Thor's name.
This is just one of those many occasions that Marvel makes "radical" changes and then retcons, switches back etc. a year or two later.

Like I said it's a marketing move. Virtually no Marvel female characters have name recognition, so the obvious move is to produce a female Thor.
