Community Event / Creation The Svadilfare: Building a sci-fi simrig

Dammit, just read through my own thread and becomes a bit sad to see how I let the project halt completely.
I know I will get into it again but I dont know when. So much that gets in the way and makes small jobs become big undertakings.
I really REALLY wish I had my own little workshop in my home.

I know what you mean. I need to do the same too.

Trying to kickstart the build again since ive been enjoying alot of DCS lately :)
Been thinking long and hard and come to the conclusion I will never be satisfied unless I go fullsized simpit so while I cannot say for sure if it will ever be finished, Id much rather aim for the sky and fail then settle on the ground in despair. So at least im back at the drawing board :)

Cooked up a rough concept tonight with just the basic idea. THis is NOT a final design and measurements are not done with great care.
THere will be alot of drawing, measuring and testing before I find a design I will stick with and hopefully Ill get to the actual building later this fall/early winter.

Anyways, heres the concept and stay tuned!

(HOTAS marked in red and the monitors marked in blue. THe aux monitor below the rest may or may not end up being built into the pit, doing so gives an awesome look for the MFDs and some other instruments, but it also restricts its usage outside of the selected sims.)

Been working a bit more on the side consoles.
Will need to compromise some looks for easy of creation as I dont have access to a real workshop or alot of good tools and machines.
The less angles and trickyness, the better!
Trying to figure out how to best design the frames.

Don't quit. I'm doing a parallel job to yours on making a simpit/spacepit and i need somebody to look up to! I'm slowly finishing up on the electronics controls (foot rudder) and i'm trying to come up with a good way to make the housing for thes controls.

The project been idle so long and I know Im gonna have alot of hassle building this winter so it would be a lie to say that I think Ill finish it.
But I AM excited to be back with the planning at least so well just see what happens :)

Im sure youve already seen them but if not, please check out ThereIsOnlyOne's build thread. --> https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=43192
TIOO also has links to some of his other projects, each and every one of them a work of art! Very inspiring!

And If your really want someone to look up to and to spark your creativity, check out Pigfumblers thread! ---> https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=58593
He came in, started breaking things apart, and endured throughout the year and now have a splendid simpit for all his space (and wine) needs!
The speed with which he built and how he managed to find amazing use of just about anything that comes in your way is just so awesome! An inspiration to pitbuilders!

For me, ive think ive settled on the console design.
This is a fairly easy design to build even with simple tools and it offers a way to have the panels modular so I can design and redesign them in whatever length I wish (their width is forced though). And fitting them will be a cakewalk.
They also transitions well into what will be the front/center console.

The picture shows one side with mockup panels, and the other open to show the inside.

Some pictures with the first concept for the front console/stand.
Its rough but ive tried taking into account HOTAS and pedal positioning, screen heights and positioning as well as mounting the triple monitor stand in the "shelf" behind the glareshield.
It seems to be working out this way but as always, there will be need for adjustments and problemsolving upon actual assembly.

These pictures show how the simpit is segmented and how one of the sides will be removable for easy entry/exit.
Previously I tried doing something similar with hinges and wheels but couldnt find a solution I was happy with.
The new idea will be ballbearing wheels and the entire console will attach to the seat and center console via strong magnets.

If you havent learned by now, I enjoy making drawings in sketchup!
Adjusting the plans, trying to find the best way to put things together, taking wiring and peripherals into account.
So here comes yet another concept, this one closer to a finished result.
Colors are only to show what parts will be quick removable (orange), dedicated panels for switches, controls and similar aux (blue) and the actual build and frame itself (grey).

Ive made sure there are ample room for wiring and there are also alot of space for various accessories to be mounted.

Ooh, i really want a 3d printer!
I have no "real" use for it, and cant really justify a purchase, but it would sure be useful in building simpits :)
LOL, I was aiming to finish just a single simpit. You are already thinking in multiples! I bow at your perseverance my liege.

Good to see you're back at it! Go! Go! Go!

From your latest sketchups, it seems like you should be able to at least use the chair that you've already built. It would be a shame if you had to start from scratch again. However, do what you have to in order to build that awesome pit!

Thunderbirds are GO!

These projects are never finished! And if they are, a new one begins immedietly! ;)
But more seriously, even tho i enjoy gaming, i enjoy the building even more, as long as it doesnt stall too much.
So yes, the future in my thinking is compromised of not simpit but simpits!

Yes I have no intentions of redoing the seat so im designing the rest around it :)
That said, would I ever want another design I only need to make sure it fits between the sideconsoles and were good to go!

Which is a hood thing as I just recently learned about g-simulation seats Oo

Will the seat slide in or will you climb in? Looks really cool :)
If climbing in is one of your worries, maybe a little exercising would be welcome. I'm trying to say this as delicate as possible :D. Because you could be a disabled veteran, a mega-tall person, or a women wearing a tight skirt (and several other options).

Seriously though, 'going in' will be one of those extra steps towards total immersion. I wouldn't go as far as adding seatbelts through. Because a) the simulated gravity generator will be able to pull you towards your seat in case of collissions, and b) they are pretty useless indoors.

Hahaha! Good one :) No exercise is not an issue here haha. I'm more worried over the potential switches and buttons on the sides if he adds any :p You don't wanna break anything just because it's a little too snug in there :p
And sliding is not a bad idea. You could even make it even more sci-fiy by adding an rotatonal axis to it, so you slide back, rotate and get out. You know all evil geniouses have rotating chairs.

Check my post here https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=171495&page=7&p=2824874&viewfull=1#post2824874 on how I am trying to solve the exit/entry.
