The Thargoid Disaster and what we learn for the future, a speculation

Would be nice to see something different on a game forum instead of the same old whine. Yes I'm new but it's the same old, this is to hard/easy/buff/nerf/change this/why was this changed.

Ahh well off to the pub for me can feel a pint and a game of darts calling me,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

it really comes down to the matter of "is this a sandbox where player agency matters, or is this a railroad, where we simply consume what is put in front of us?"

What certainly brought about a strong reaction within my group is exactly that. Whether Galnet or the AX missiles, FD seems to be taking agency away even where it was before. Nobody is upset with Thargies adapting to our weapons (which actually is a nice idea). After all, we do the same with engineering on our own ships to survive longer in CZs, etc.

This is just yet another example of FD completely misreading their community. I actually made a prediction before 2.4 that SDC/others in the community would likely within days find a way to kill Thargies. This was not a hard guess. It should have been expected.

To then just go, no! this doesn't fit our planned storyline, so <snap> we'll just change some parameters on the weapons.

i.e. Stay on the rails, you lot! You shall not determine the story's development or outcome.

I am not even that interested in the Thargoid content. But I am critically invested in this game being a sandbox, where players can affect the galaxy. That was already under threat in many ways. If this approach means the game will be even more on rails, I fear for the longevity of the game. It is the sandbox aspects of the game that keep me playing at all.

Remember when Frontier said we'd have a hand in the story, and we'd be partly affecting the outcome? This is true, from a certain point of view; just not our view. But clearly they have a design goal, and we will experience this on their terms alone. Nothing wrong with thargoids adapting, but such a blatant hand of god, using that as a convenient excuse, makes a mockery of prior statements.

There is a path, we will only have that one path; it's a completely linear outcome, in a sandbox universe.

I believe the entire forum needs to apologize to the devs me included. They told us the truth, they chopped the missiles to show they were adapting. Or they could have not told us till we discovered the thargoid did not adapt, they let us fly to maia with no hope of a win for a week. we found out they balanced the missiles instead after they weren't potent against npc's anymore. Or just gave us the missiles as they are now and nobody had fun killing aliens and the idea of them evolving wasn't there.
The truth wasn't good enuff. :(

THe funny thing about the fdev story telling is that it looks great from the outside. People hear about ED and it sounds amazing.

But for the majority of people playing it, you never even know it happened.

Interesting thing is that AX Missiles still dont work while Multicannons do. If anyone can logically explain this I will give him a medal. Both have same description: "loaded with compound that damages alien vessels".

Ok, one is Explosive, other Kinetic but why doesnt the same compound work on missiles anyway? They explode on impact, not some trigger holding.

And ofc just yesterday first goid has fallen (solo) using 2xMissiles and 2xMulticannon. Why you ask? Well missiles still have high damage to exert the heart earlier and then just spray it with multis. GG. But understand this, I just cant be bothered anymore to go into combat with them knowing AX Missiles dont work because of magic.

Anyway, this storyline is so horrible that I KNOW there is no real preset and they are working like "day-to-day" basis. Some complication here, some help there, repeat.
If they hired a few people from here (just for the story) we would be blown away.

And this is how 2.4 will go on...
- tons of fetch CGs for Parity projects and who knows what else
- after about a month some new thargoid ships will appear and people will wooooow
- that will die down while we still CG chuggin...
- And months will pass, we will get new utilities, thargoids better ships and there will be some story

Then Elite goes into 3.0 - "Maintenance Mode" patching.

Frontier said they are now working on multiple games and plan to release one each year. Elite will live because of its name and maybe just maybe it gets some attention down the road like Atmo landings. But for that I estimate 2-3 years.

I knew not to expect too much but did anyway and hype was real. It is still good but the fact Missiles dont work is killing me. It will pass.

EDIT: Those poor souls that dont watch the forums too much. They will miss all the story.

Just one of the possible solutions (which we actually have in the game for humans to use):

... also Thargoids have have their own tech so they might have a totally novel mechanics to counter missiles which are about to hit the vital modules (hearts in this case). The point is that the nasty ax compound can only damage what it can reach. Missiles can reach the outer shell of the Thargoid and thus do hull damage and exert the heart but Goids clearly have some way to destroy the missile before it reaches the exerted heart (hearts do take small amount of damage from missiles too so I'm assuming it's splash damage).

Personally I'm happy with the current mechanics. Just soloing them with missiles was much more boring than what we have now and who knows what we'll have couple of months from now. I only hope FDev will rethink the arms race mechanics (there's only so much CG trade grind people will tolerate).

Even with that, they should do more damage and not be completely useless. But you are right, Thargoids are unknown so they might have something different. But still it bothers me.

*hands over the medal* to Xargo

When they apologise for treating us like their beta testers and their play things, I'll reciprocate.
