The Thargoid War: Thoughts and Feelings

Are you enjoying the Thargoid War?
Yes, even with the mission bugs. With the new weapons it has encouraged me to take on larger interceptors. I used to spend most of my time in a small private group but now play regularly in the AXI private group. Been in wings and taken down Hydras. Has been great fun joining with other like minded commanders. I prefer the surface base combat, high g is frustratinlg entertaining at times.

Are you motivated to engage in the gameplay associated with the war?
Yes, although there are times when I think - ok what should I do now. I finally decided to try out the modifies plasma charger, I like them. Have been taking on a variety of missions.

Are you optimistic or pessimistic about humanity's chances to win?
I am sure humanity will win in the end. My guess is that we will get more weapons and possibly a new ship with regenerative hull.

What do you think of this direction for the narrative?
I think it mirrors real life. Commanders are on different sides of the fence. Not sure where it is going yet, I expect the next update will add more. Like many others commanders I look forward to on foot Thargoid CZ's (fingers crossed).

While not really important to the gameplay, the area I find frustrating is not appearing to be credited with a kill. Example, when in a CZ with other commanders (both in wing and not in wing) I kill a Thargoid scout (only commander in the area), I get the credits message on screen but don't get anything written to the log, but sometimes get both. Makes we wonder if it is contributing to my combat ranking when I only get the credits message on screen.

Remark:
We do not mean to offend anyone and or disparage the achievements of Frontier and its developers/employees.

Told from another side....

Status as of a few weeks ago.
Some of our clan members have tried and failed with a customized Stadndard configuration of ships and ARX weapons.
It would take too long and the effort is too great for them to equip their ships for battle.
Therefore, they have withdrawn from Elite for the time being.
(I the admin of our group)

To 1.
unfortunately no.
I have been trying to equip a ship for weeks with the grind, but have now put it on hold for now!
I have as a person who has to work every day from 0500 in the morning to 1900 in the evening and also already belongs to the older semester, not the time to fulfill all this in a short time. The grind to get certain materials is just too big. In Dave's Hope alone, you have to log in and out hundreds of times to fill your warehouse! The time is simply missing. It is extremely exhausting!

Zu 2.
Only slightly.
Why?
For one thing, there is no game in this segment that doesn't get along without war. In the free game, you are now already being attacked on the ground like in SC in Coli Diski if you want to farm parts! So we only play in our own group when we play.
Can man devine himself only through wars?
Anyway.
On the other hand, it is currently in the game as already described too costly to build and equip ships.

Zu 3.
I think that the players who still play Elite are far too few to participate actively and continuously in this war and to decide it. It is also all too complicated!
Don't get me wrong, it's beautifully implemented but all too complicated and time consuming! The whole day the everyday life and then in the evening for 1-2 hours maybe once or twice a week with his friends still highly concentrated in a war scenario to play, that want the fewest players at a mature age. Unfortunately, that is not relaxing. So you better make a delivery to everyone and then the air is already out! And we have already spent many hours in Elite.

Zu 4.
This is a beautiful story.
The staff who write this story and keep it alive a big thumbs up.
However, as I/we have written many times, that's probably where most young people can really identify. For the more mature semester, it's hard to read into a story like this over and over again after the weekly survival efforts in real life ;) Please do not misunderstand! For teenagers certainly exciting and exciting top! Us in the evening then already annoying when we have to fight with the date in the game or in videos ;)
But that's just our problem! :)

In summary:
The idea and narrative is okay. In view of the many wars in the world and the current situation, let's say not so easy! But this is our adult opinion!
However, we are all of the opinion, as already written and listed in many other posts, that Elite would need many more important and other changes in the game, but unfortunately have not found their way into the game so far. Our suggestions alone to the holding, behavior, management, costs, route planning and some more of the carriers are simply skillfully ignored.
Why ever!?
But this is exactly what could bring fun and many players back into the game. I've been playing Elite since it existed! And I play it again and again. However you find no new players or old players who still want to bring up the energy to want to go through the in many places outdated techniques, gameplay and administration in the game.

All this is only our opinion.
Just our feeling freely expressed
We look to the future and hope.

Many greetings.

I like the war. No wait, that came out wrong. I enjoy the Thargoid invasion. No, that sounds wrong too...
  • Are you enjoying the Thargoid War?
Yes, I am having fun with the war actities I take part in, which is mostly flying evac missions.
  • Are you motivated to engage in the gameplay associated with the war?
As said above, my main interaction with the war gameplay is flying evac missions. When the invasion was unfolding I built an AX Krait, but it has yet to be used. I do not really enjoy the idea of Thargoid combat. I don't really have any experience in it, the little bit I tried I really sucked at. But I do enjoy doing humanitarian support. The flying part (in VR) is by far my favorite thing about ED, and the evac missions give me a good reason to sit in the cockpit. I also enjoy the elevated difficulty of having to be alert and having to deal with interdictions as well as hyperdictions. It also helps that the evac missions are a good source of G5 materials.
  • Are you optimistic or pessimistic about humanity's chances to win?
If humanity stays on the "kill 'em all, kill everything that moves" course of its past, I think things will not look so good. OTOH who knows what advantage the development of new tech will give us. Also, after two attempted genocides, the Thargoids have every right to try to exterminate the thread, so a peaceful solution might be off the the table.
  • What do you think of this direction for the narrative?
(y) . I hope the future will not be too predictable and we get a few surprises. i would not mind a bit of doom, too.

  • Are you enjoying the Thargoid War?
    • Yes very indeed
  • Are you motivated to engage in the gameplay associated with the war?
    • I am little scared about involving this because i have no Guardians weapons.
  • Are you optimistic or pessimistic about humanity's chances to win?
    • Very optimistic i am
  • What do you think of this direction for the narrative?
    • You are doing wonderful job about revive the game!

Greetings Commanders,

We're checking in again to see whether you're enjoying the Thargoid War at large. We recently posted this thread to ask for feedback on the specific mechanics, let us know about any bugs or issues and technical things of that nature. We'd like thank you all for the feedback you provided. It has been immensely helpful in working with the developers to plan the direction of future changes. We have already started to roll out these plans the form of recent balancing adjustments and changes to the weekly reset system. If you have further feedback of this kind, please make sure to leave it in that thread!

This time, we're checking in to better understand how you feel about the War. Here are some questions to give an idea of what we're trying to understand:
  • Are you enjoying the Thargoid War?
  • Are you motivated to engage in the gameplay associated with the war?
  • Are you optimistic or pessimistic about humanity's chances to win?
  • What do you think of this direction for the narrative?
Once again, please keep any feedback on specific gameplay related issues or suggestion, to this thread. Thanks in advance!

I personally haven't joined the war against the Thargoids, don't feel motivated to fight them knowing we pushed for this situation and also because we've done it before many times already.

I would rather see them burn the bubble and force humanity into Colonia where we would do a last stand. That would motivate me! Either that or a new gameplay where we can actually work with the Thargoids instead of fighting them, and maybe improve our relations with them.

As for the narrative can't say I dislike it, but would rather see an option for friendly interactions with the Thargoids and ways to end the war peacefully.

  1. Are you enjoying the Thargoid War?
Yes and no. Since the war started, I've actually started doing AX combat. However, some of the bugs, as well as constantly having to deal with scouts AND interceptors at the same time (different loadouts are optimal for each, plus scouts can be a real pain when supporting an interceptor I'm fighting) have detracted from my enjoyment. I also enjoyed doing evacuation missions for awhile. However, I'm getting burnt out and preferring to do other activities.
  2. Are you motivated to engage in the gameplay associated with the war?
Again, this is a mixed bag. I was, at first, to protect systems from being lost. However the sheer scale is getting overwhelming. Plus seeing the same systems going from invasion>recovery>fine>alert>invasion over and over again makes the exercise feel pointless, especially since the Thargoids keep expanding through uninhabited systems at a rapid pace while we remain focused on defending the same systems over and over.
  3. Are you optimistic or pessimistic about humanity's chances to win?
Unless the we get new weapons, ships, and equipment, no. More so, if Aegis and the super powers can't pick up more of the burden and curtail the spread, no we're going to lose. If this were a real war, it would be demoralizing. Adding to that, this is a game, and if it stops being fun, the number of people resisting will decrease... yeah, not optimistic.
  4. What do you think of this direction for the narrative?
I like what you're trying to do, but I'm losing interest fast. Already wanting to go back to doing my own thing - bounty hunting, exploring, VIP passenger runs, etc. It feels like a chore.
Worse, the AX constraints are still irritating (needing any AX scanner just to tell targets apart and target subsystems is insulting). My AX fighting is only part-time now and rapidly decreasing. The AX combat bond reduction was another disincentive. Maybe it was needed for balance, but it felt like "real life work crap" - i.e. "Congrats on all your hard work, as you now have even more work to do, were going to pay you less per hour so it all comes out the same." Again, not saying you made the wrong decision, but you're asking how all this feels and for me... I'm getting frustrated, irritated, and losing interest.

  • Are you enjoying the Thargoid War?
Absolutely, the new content you've given us is superb. With the latest fixes, we're enjoying the crescendo even more, however I think FDev still need to balance the effort vs. progress. If a small group of CMDRs are working to save a system, that cannot be compared with another system that a large group is doing so. Since the Thargoid War started, the number of Thargoid controlled systems is obviously doubling. Moreover, the issue with the kills registering in our journals while in a wing or a group of CMDRs haven't been looked at. This is causing to fail missions deliberately and hence the progress of a system.

  • Are you motivated to engage in the gameplay associated with the war?
That's what I'm currently doing. AX hunting is what I like most, so definitely motivated especially when FDev gives us new content. Having said that, though, Elite is not only AX hunting, We would like to see content in other aspects of the game, like new ships, the ability to engineer the new Stabilisers modules, in a way to stabilise heat for e.g. Apart from that please do keep in mind other communities of the game like CQC - Please do fix it, and highly, but highly introduce private groups like the main game to enjoy it even more.
  • Are you optimistic or pessimistic about humanity's chances to win?
Definitely optimistic that humanity will win, however not anytime soon. Perhaps when the Thargoids have reached Colonia and other parts of the galaxy? So they've attacked our Bubble, the Human space, once we win in perhaps a year's time, when are we going to reach their own bubble? the permit locked Col Sector? We definitely need a payback scenario there!
  • What do you think of this direction for the narrative?
Simply perfect, we've got a lot to look forward. The narrative is definitely becoming more and more interesting. Give us more news in the Galnet that guides us with hints to what we need to discover.

Keep up the good work, and please do not give up Elite Dangerous anytime soon. We love this game!!

  • Are you enjoying the Thargoid War?
  • Are you motivated to engage in the gameplay associated with the war?
  • Are you optimistic or pessimistic about humanity's chances to win?
  • What do you think of this direction for the narrative?
Am I enjoying the war? More or less. It makes for interesting reading whilst I go about my stellar surveys in deep space.

Am I motivated? Not at all. I don't like to engage in those kinds of activities.

Optimistic vs pessimistic? The human race is doomed! The bubble will be annihilated and millions will be fleeing to the far flung reaches of the galaxy looking for new homes. The very ones I'm scouting out. You're welcome!

What do I think of this narrative? I think it is very entertaining and is certainly one of the more interesting things I've seen in an online game since the time in the late 1990's when Everquest staged a huge invasion of monsters attacking the main city. I also think it's well done on the part of the developers that they've designed a system that lets the game decide how to proceed with the war, rather than it being directed by a human or group of people. This will make it more challenging for the players to understand how the enemy is making it's moves. Top notch work all around.

  • Are you enjoying the Thargoid War? - Absolutely! This war has been not only profitable but fun! This introduced Xeno combat to myself and many many CMDRs that never set foot in that realm before.

  • Are you motivated to engage in the gameplay associated with the war? - Yes! Before this war, I was mainly playing solo and on occasion with 1 or 2 friends. This war intro'd me to the AXI community and it's been awesome slugging it out with other CMDRs in CZ.

  • Are you optimistic or pessimistic about humanity's chances to win? - As it stands, pessimistic. This war has really set the tone of immersion with the fact that humanity is losing far more than it can currently save. Humanity is absolutely on track to lose the Bubble at this rate. But with war, comes R&D! Cannot wait to see more new tech

  • What do you think of this direction for the narrative? - Enjoying it! It's been unpredictable!
Now with that said, here are is some gameplay feedback.

*Allow more CMDRs to instance into a CZ without the use of a Wing.
*Fire back up the Guardian narrative. There are alot of explorers that want new Guardian content to go hunting for.
*Fix Interceptors and Scouts clipping into stations and planet surfaces. They should actually take damage when they crash into the surface as well as bounce off of it. They shouldn't be defying physics. They are not ethereal.
*Introduce Huge weapons for our big boi ships. :D

And the big one...Revamp Engineering. That thread that was posted in 2021 asking for feedback has not been addressed at all.

Are you enjoying the Thargoid War?
Yes
Are you motivated to engage in the gameplay associated with the war?
Yes
Are you optimistic or pessimistic about humanity's chances to win?
neither ATM feels like a stalemate, salvation has gifted us a generation war. However, updates could certainly change this.
What do you think of this direction for the narrative?
Neutral

  • Are you enjoying the Thargoid War?
    • Yes its shaken things up in the bubble a lot and that's a good thing
  • Are you motivated to engage in the gameplay associated with the war?
    • Not really, it a was fun for a couple of days but i really want something fresh, ground combat is what I am looking for
  • Are you optimistic or pessimistic about humanity's chances to win?
    • From an interesting point of view it would be fun if humanity lost, but it wont.
  • What do you think of this direction for the narrative?
    • Its a good narrative but its very predictable.

Overall 6/10, Not a lot of new content which is my main gripe, New content as in something we haven't seen before.

Hi Bruce ...
  • Are you enjoying the Thargoid War?
No. I am not good at combat, and have not shot at any Thargoid. I am trying to stay out of the conflict and hope it ends as soon as possible.

  • Are you motivated to engage in the gameplay associated with the war?
No. Combat doesn't interest me. The Thargoids attacking systems is restricting my gameplay, and if it escalates further, may result in me ending my playing of Elite Dangerous as my enjoyment is being eroded.

  • Are you optimistic or pessimistic about humanity's chances to win?
I don't care, and would prefer Humans win so that the game can return to what it was, despite all its flaws.

  • What do you think of this direction for the narrative?
Please end it soon, if not sooner.

Are you enjoying the Thargoid War?
No. I am not involved.

Are you motivated to engage in the game play associated with the war?
No.

Are you optimistic or pessimistic about humanity's chances to win?
I am optimistic your script ends with a victory for humanity regardless of player participation.

What do you think of this direction for the narrative?
It's really not that interesting. Thargoids don't really do much but slime stuff, make noises, and sometimes shoot at you. They have no personality other than anger or ambivalence. Why are we fighting them? Because they are fighting us. Why are they fighting us? Because we are fighting them. Pretty dumb.

  • Are you enjoying the Thargoid War?
The start was very good. Now it's going to boring a little bit, good money, but less effort, no sucessfull weeks, always lost systems after a lots of fighting.
  • Are you motivated to engage in the gameplay associated with the war?

Yes.
  • Are you optimistic or pessimistic about humanity's chances to win?

Pessimistic.
  • What do you think of this direction for the narrative?
Good direction, but players are waiting more new content, for example alien thargoids.

  • Are you enjoying the Thargoid War?
Yes I definitely am enjoying it. Overall I enjoy the current mechanics far more than I did the old days of nothing but optional AXSS

I have ONE major point of contention:
Hyperdiction and Interdiction in the conflict systems is over-the-top.

I believe these mechanics should absolutely exist and I think everyone going through should face them however you need to add a cool down or leaky-integrator over a few hours on these so they stop happening after they have happened and been survived multiple times. I get insanely tired of being hyperdicted on nearly every jump through the region as well as facing 3 and 4 interdictions on the way to join friends. Also please fix the fuel use bug there too. Combat ships have short range as is so having to use the fuel twice on every jump gets incredibly old as well.

Beyond that and some bugs I'm sure you are aware of it's a cool addition to the game.

  • Are you motivated to engage in the gameplay associated with the war?
I am but that will wane over time. It's fun that some new ways to approach things are possible now but there is not much new (beyond the backend) in how it's done, types of interceptors or scouts and in 6 months credits will be all but meaningless to me. I think we need some shake up in this to make things more interesting in the long haul. The mechanics of the settlement power ups need a look, that's just not going to work as a feature as is. I'm feeling pessimistic about Thargoid ground combat now but I do hope that is coming.

The new CZs around the stations are fun but the stations need to have weapons that are meaningful. Seeing a whole port and everything it fires unable to stop a single scout makes it feel a bit silly.

  • Are you optimistic or pessimistic about humanity's chances to win?
I don't entirely believe we are running that show, but without a breakthrough way to slow the advance I'm pessimistic for anything beyond stalemate.

  • What do you think of this direction for the narrative?
I like it overall. Narrative as been much more entertaining the last year or so. Well done.

Thanks for requesting our feedback, Bruce! Hopefully some of it has been and continues to be an asset to help the devs move forward. Here's my hundred credits worth;

  • Are you enjoying the Thargoid War?
Absolutely, yes. This has been the most significant, dynamic, exciting event I've seen in the game since starting the game in 2020. Even when I am not engaging with this part of the game, I'm enjoying that it's there.

  • Are you motivated to engage in the gameplay associated with the war?
Generally yes. I was originally skittish about trying AX combat, as it seemed to be off-limits without specific ship builds and flight tactics. The war has done a very good job of making AX very accessible at the lower tiers (fighting scouts and Cyclops class Interceptors) while still also keeping the Thargoids in the realm of top-tier high difficulty encounters that feel risky and exciting (Basilisks, Medusas, Hydras).

I am particularly motivated about running rescue and evac operations, as they provide a meaningful and sometimes high-risk way to engage with the war when I do not want to fly combat sorties but still want to be involved. In particular, I appreciate that Odyssey content is starting to be part of the equation, as of the last patch. Bringing settlements back online as part of post-Thargoid recovery was a good idea.

  • Are you optimistic or pessimistic about humanity's chances to win?
Initially I was pessimistic that the terrifyingly motivated and organized community of Elite Dangerous was going to contain the maelstroms in a matter of weeks and make this exciting scenario pointless. I am pleased that the players did not successfully out-game the dungeon master, and that the Thargoid invasion feels like a serious, dangerous threat.

I am optimistic that as the war continues, if new game elements (such as the Enhanced AX weapons, stabilizer modules, etc) keep coming, the war will stay fresh and evolve, and we'll stay engaged. Whether we win or lose is down to player effort, but I hope the evolution of this scenario keeps us excited and keeps us trying to win.

Overall I am optimistic that we have a chance to win, as long as the gameplay doesn't leave players apathetic and disengaged with the scenario.

  • What do you think of this direction for the narrative?
Fantastic. Y'all have generally knocked it out of the park. My one gripe was that I didn't want to see Aegis return just to be the narrative's punching bag again, but the setup seems to indicate that Aegis is going to actually do something, so I'm cautiously optimistic about that. I wouldn't mind seeing some narrative threads soon that start to give us some insight into the Thargoids themselves, rather than just humanity's reactions and internal politicking.

I think there could be some more direct puzzle-solving or scientific endeavor style content added to the narrative to help counter-balance all the fighting. Not sure if that's already coming down the pipeline, but it'd be welcome if it is.

I do think that for this war scenario to be meaningful, it does eventually have to end. This narrative will get stale if it tries to become a perpetual gameplay loop with no conclusion. I also hope that the systems and storytelling techniques used in this war can be applied to new narrative in the future (like a renewed take on power play, or large-scale wars between the superpowers, to name two examples).

All told; great job with this. This has made the game more exciting and made me want to engage with it more. Keep up the good work. The more dynamic and alive this galaxy feels, the better off the game will be.

I’m enjoying the thargoid and war quite a bit, I like the narrative, I only wish there was a little more narrative towards the pro-xeno type commanders.
I would like to see the thargoids be a lot harder, extremely harder.
I would like to see them in-gulf and take up the majority of the bubble, and reset the BGS in the PowerPlay of majority of the systems.
I would like to see total anarchy inside the bubble!
I would like to see the Thargoid’s have their own power-play and faction leaders, and they have their own types of missions.
What’s this one’s a long shot but I’m gonna say it anyways I would like to see all commanders that make any benefit to this game as to play in open only!!!!

Overall loving the war its a great addition and a shot in the arm for the game and the community... some things to make things feel more immersive and consequential with low effort...
  • More graffiti - make its spread automatic around systems within 50ly of the frontlines (and within) the invaded systems... leading to...
  • in abandoned settlements, some other types of graffiti and messages as hurriedly left by evacuating personnel! Would sell the panic and terror
  • Similarly, in the areas close to frontlines, have more audio announcements in bars and concourses about the war - ideally announcing actual current statuses and places to have best chance of impact (leveraging the great Galmap additions recently)
  • missions to recover Thargoid data recorded in the abandoned settlements that we also have to restore
  • missions to gather Vista biodata from surfaces - and increase the right-click audio ping range to 1km!
Bigger effort changes...
  • start to ramp up Thargoid counter offensives to the on foot settlement restore missions... and you know what we want! :)
  • then have the Frontline kiosk start to offer opportunities to counter those Thargoids -- real Startship Troopers moments
Regarding how I feel it is going, I want it to feel at least as bleak and pessimistic as it is, that we might not win this, real consequences stuff.

Other general ideas in the sig block below

I am (was) enjoying the war. but the bugs made me play other games.
First the Interceptors that do not spawn in. Thats very frustrating, as fighting scouts is no real challange
Second, when i tried the reactivation missions, alot of the settlements were already online. So i had to abandon those missions.
If these bugs get solved, i certainly will rejoin the war efforts.

I am pessimistic about humantys chances to win. The number of thargoid controlled systems is rapidly increasing. If we don't get more CMDRs to take part, or some new technology to defeat them faster, we are doomed.
But maybe, we are missing a point. Maybe there is a mystery that needs to be solved or a tactic to learn, so we can push them back. I don't know. Some hints may be nice ;-)

The direction of the narritive is very promissing. Keep up the great work - and include more Odyssey gameplay into the war.
