The Truth about Oculus Rift DK2

I love how people stress their bad vr experiences with such low specced pc's. honestly, if you want to experience vr, you need to invest, to be impressed. You think it's bad now, imagine what it'll be like when the consumer model is released.

This review captures the essence of the Rift perfectly. It also highlights why I can't understand why they think it's ready. It's 5 years from ready... At this half SBS 1080p it still struggles on a game as resource-feeble as Elite with a GTX 970, AND looks like gameboy res, how do they expect to get it up to a decent res AND have it work on even the top end home PCs, not to mention the average joe's?

I've seen one of the Rift devs say that it will need to be 8k resolution to match the resolution we see sitting a normal distance from a 1080p monitor. 8k guys. With all the tracking and stuff. It's a long long way off from being ready, but for now, as your review says, it's the most awesome crappy thing in existence.

Stop ripping Gameboy it's classic! It led to DS3 then DS3D. Gotta start somewhere not gonna wait 5 years for what I can experience today right.

If that logic was wrong I wouldn't have one ;)

Yeah and anyway, I wouldn't compare it to Gameboy. More realistic to compare it to Playstation 1

Bit random... I reckon CV1 will have 4K resolution...

... because the Galaxy Note 5 is out in Q3, and they're already using Galaxy Note 3 in DK2, so are chummy with Sammy... who're sure gonna be happy about an extra 500,000 4K screen sales. I reckon this is why the delay... until Sammy gets the mass 4K production line running.

And here's the thought that excites me... we're gonna love it with our existing rigs!

Even if PC's can't power a 4K Rift display, but instead output a DK2 signal into the 4K Rift... then the quality will still be much higher when viewed. The screen-door (which I've yet to see when my rift arrives), might vanish completely. If they manage to put some on-chip interpolation/upscaling in too, then it could add some amazing potential, for no extra PC graphics power. Like playing your 15 year old DVD on a top notch modern 1080p/4K TV with upscaling... it's better than it ever was originally!

And then, when PC's do get better... we can use the full potential of the 4K Rift... thus making a late-2015 Rift release future-proof for possibly 3-5 years (until regular gamers' rigs catch up!).

Any thoughts?

Random link in case it's not been posted... a simulator of different resolutions for the Rift, check out the 4K beauty... http://vr.mkeblx.net/oculus-sim/

I like the way you think

i've had my rift for a week now and the first day i got it, i thought it was awesome. but i hadn't set it properly. i've played it with iracing which the rift makes it awesome. and now that i have set it up properly. yesterday when i was leaving a station 4 feds were attacking a wanted NPC in a added. so i stopped and watched the show. it was awesome, now i want every game to have rift supported as standard. the only way to play.

Good writeup. Maybe a bit dramatic. ;) It's not gameboy graphics.
The screendoor effect is a major issue though and the reason it is only a devkit. You could not sell it like that.
All the need to do now is reduce the screendoor effect and make it more userfriendly to setup and wear (get VR Cover - seriously!).

Pending my Rift delivery today, so don't really know nuttin'...

Could it somehow be possible to add a sorta screen-protector to the screen inside the rift... to add a very small amount of blur? If the pixels were blurred a tiny bit, so that blur could extend over the lines between the pixels? Possibly also help with the chromatic aberration that I've seen in pictures by merging (via blur) the colours in the PenTile matrix?

Got my rift last night. Played demos for a couple hours with the wife. Oh man... What a blast!!!
Sure the graphics are not great, but its still plenty good considering what you get... A whole lot of WOW.....
VR is not comparable to playing on a monitor. Its fully involved...
ED first run was easy and no errors/problems. I followed good advice found here. https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=88239

You can and it has been done. It works sort of. Screendoor is gone but so is sharpness. I got a protector here but my screwdriver is not long enough so i did not finish the mod.

Ahhh, ok... good stuff! Glad to hear I'm not talking utter... :).

Just googled it (duhhh, why didn't i earlier)... looks like this guy has tried it too, with positive results.

Might give it a few weeks first myself though... since my Rift only arrived an hour ago.
