The Type-8

Since it's hardpoints preclude it from being a good mining ship, I'm wondering if it will be able to be lightened up to make it a good exploration ship. I'm thinking how the Adder is a decent exploration ship for that "level" in ship tiers. The adder is supposed to be a hauler, it sucks in that regard, but it actually makes a decent first exploration ship because it's basically a flying gas can, up the FSD, add a scoop and a probe launcher and you're good.

So I'm looking at the Type-8 and am wondering if this will be a repeat performance for the "its supposed to be a hauler but makes a decent exploration ship"

I don't fault Fdev since they didn't say it WAS going to be able to do mining. I think alot of folks assumed that because the industrial ships often are made INTO mining ships.

I would LOVE an awesome mining ship, but I get that mining is that "its there to enable making money with low skill, but it's not something we actively support" kind of thing. So I didn't even think any of these 4 ships they are making, that one was going to be a miner. I DO hope that we get an actual exploration ship, like a Asp X Mk 2 or something.

I don't understand about the miner, like the spear, and other mining equipment just class 1.
Only 2 classes have missiles for explosion but tvc t8 has one M slot

the decent mining lasers are class two hardpoints. There ARE class 1s but they are more "basic", so while the type 8 can physically mine, it's just wont be a good one.

most of the good mining ships are like the Python with this approximate build: https://edsy.org/#/L=F500000H4C0S00...5Vk000bg007Pc005Sc005uk002jw00,Mining_0Python

The worst thing about small mining lasers is their range. Since you can have up to 5 on that T8 it's not all bad. A pure laser mining build could also slot a medium one in. And mining lances don't have the range problem.

Ive taken a Type 7 to Beagle, this just looks better, i can see me doing the same.

Ron Cobb has been identified, and this concept art from Alien obviously shows his influence on FDev design:

That said, my first thought when I saw the Type 8 was that it reminded me a lot of a Chris Foss ship concept created for (the never-produced) Dune by Jodorowski:

Obviously, games and movies normally put form over function, which is fine with me. I love the creative element, especially when we get something that goes beyond the “airplane in space” mindset.

(Edit: apparently, spoiler tags don’t work on images the way I thought they would. 🙂)

I would quibble the second middle image is more Krait Mk 2 cockpit with the side blisters.

I think it’s more of a DNA thing for me than a straight copy. The Foss Dune ship doesn’t even really have a cockpit, and the prongs look like intakes. For that matter, it might have been a spice harvester.

It was just the first ship that popped into my mind when I saw the Type 8. Foss also worked on some concept art for Alien.

The documentary Jodorowsky’s Dune is absolutely fascinating, not only for the “what might have been” aspect, but also for seeing how the team he put together went on to use ideas and concepts from that project in some landmark sci-fi.

EDIT: I didn’t fully grok which image you were referencing. The “middle” image is part of the same gif, so I thought you were talking about the Foss design.

Interestingly, that middle one was one of Cobb’s designs for the Nostromo in Alien. It reminds me a lot of the command deck in ED’s fleet carriers.
