As for the magpie goose, I genuinely had no idea they weren't considered a true goose.
Sorry for the double post.
Although I said that, I think it is only fair for the magpie goose to stay in the goose category, similar to ducks.
As for the magpie goose, I genuinely had no idea they weren't considered a true goose.
1. African penguin - my most used one. Such a staple zoo animal.Birds. Avians. Pájaros. Let's begin:
- Southern cassowary - when I started playing back in November 2020, the Australia pack was the newest pack at the time. When I saw the roster, I was shocked that the cassowary was part of it and I got super excited about it. Their sounds are amazing, their look is cool, everything about them
- Red-crowned crane - while at 1st I didn't care too much, these have grown on me and I use them often when I need a space to fill and can't think of anything to do, specifically Japanese gardens
- Indian peafowl - peafowl are beautiful birds, and I love to have little gardens where the peafowl roam. I particularly love it when males display their feathers
- Greater flamingo - I love to have a lush pond where the flamingos can be. I only wish we had a 2nd flamingo species
- African penguin - these little guys are fantastic to have. I love everything about them
- King penguin - the sounds they make are cool to hear. I love to hear the different animal sounds in-game, especially with a hug flock of king penguins
- Emu - I don't use them often and likely won't unless I want an area dedicated to Australia, which I rarely do nowadays. However, nice bird, nice model
- Common ostrich - my least favorite, but that doesn't mean I dislike them. I rarely have a habitat dedicated to just the. For me, they only work if placed alongside other African animals, specifically giraffes and zebras
A countdown! From least favorite to most!Hey all! Very slow week with only one new contributor so I'll update the list when we get more traction.
In the mean time, weekly community question, what's your personal ranking of the 8 birds currently in game? Reasoning can be anything, your personal preference, the quality of the animal in-game, most fun to build for, whatever you like.
Honestly I think the Cassowary is more of a dinobird then the shoebill. Those guys are straight outta some Jurassic park movie.A countdown! From least favorite to most!
8. Indian Peafowl. Now perma-banned from my Franchise Zoos due to for the troublemakers they are. Peafoul is right. They're also super noisy. I got over the spread of the feathers animation very quickly.
(very very large gap)
7. Flamingo - very interesting to watch, but can be a handful to handle cleanliness wise. That's the main reason they're not higher on the list.
6. Red Crowned Crane - it's okay, but much of my excitement was for the potential they opened for more habitat birds besides Ratites and Penguins..........still.....waiting....for...this...
(small gap)
5. Ostrich - another fun to watch but may also have lost its "shine" so to speak by being in the game from the start...it's still the highest of the base game birds.
4. King Penguin - a moot point now, but this is should have been in the base game. Very taken with them from the start. They're still fun to watch. I sometimes struggle with the temperatures for them, and my habitats look really boring since they're all mostly snow.
3. Emu - really glad we got them and their running animations are fun to watch. Our australia zoos became much more complete after they were added. Visually they look great. Still something missing to get them higher than this spot.
2. Southern Cassowary - And that something the Emu lacks...was color. the SC are gorgeous and stand out so much in the animal roster. Really no complaints against them at all. But...
1. African Penguin - Everything I really love about the King Penguin, less the problems that I encounter with them due to more temperature tolerance. I love making habitats for them as well. They're definitely the go-to penguin for me. I realize that some people were unhappy with their addition and that's fine, for me, this specific species was still much wanted.
None of these would measure up well to things like the Bald Eagle, Toucan, Macaws (or the Shoebill even because DINObirb). But overall I like 7 of the 8 birds we have.
Daffy is also up there for me. I preferred the kinda calm-ish, cunning Daffy that would outsmart his opponents compared to the crazy "woo hoo woo hoo woo hoo" Daffy...This may surprise some of you - especially considering my username, but I love the ducks. I think I'll take Daffy over Donald, but Ducktales is masterpiece.
Who are some of your favorite fictional/cartoon birds? Would their Planet Zoo counterpart be a fun addition to your virtual zoos?
So fun fact about Rio! I'm a tour guide at the Bronx Zoo, and a lot of our birds were used as reference for Rio!I dunno, I guess the Rio cast: Nico, Pedro, Blue & Jewel, Rafael, Nigel, Felipe. Those would be the perfect birds for the game
Just noticed this has been expanded to 25, so 10 extra species for me!Oooh awesome... now the problem is that there are so many essential building blocks we need, gonna struggle to actually get any of my personal wildcard favourites in here, but nevermind
1. Golden Pheasant
2. Lady Amherst's Pheasant
3. Scarlet Macaw
4. Blue and Gold Macaw
5. Toco Toucan
6. Great Hornbill
7. Rainbow Lorikeet
8. Laughing Kookaburra
9. Grey Crowned Crane
10. Marabou Stork
11. Snowy Owl
12. Helmeted Guinea Fowl
13. Scarlet Ibis
14. Pelican sp.
15. Griffon Vulture sp.
Had to make some hard cuts to get it down to 15, but I think in terms of what I think of when I think of Zoos, this probably captures most of it (excluding the inevitable budgies and finches, but they aren't preciely big appeal species lets be real). The hornbill is really my only luxury choice here just cos its a really charismatic species,
Ok, that's cool, you probably have one of the best jobs out there. And you just opened a whole lotta memories with RobotsSo fun fact about Rio! I'm a tour guide at the Bronx Zoo, and a lot of our birds were used as reference for Rio!
Prior to its closure, Blue Sky Studios - the animation company behind Rio (also the Ice Age series, The Peanuts Movie, Robots, etc) - was the only East Coast based major animation studio in the US. So they'd make a quick trip to New York and come to the zoo and study the birds for the animation process.
Wow, a celebrity bird. Does he/she KO people too?In particular, our cockatoo Asia - whose lived at the zoo since the 1970s - was the reference for Nigel
I like Plimpton from the Dolittle movie a few years back. I love his ridiculous bushy eyebrows and his panic attacks and attitude is so me.Who are some of your favorite fictional/cartoon birds? Would their Planet Zoo counterpart be a fun addition to your virtual zoos?
How did I forget about him? He was greatCrane from King Fu Panda. He just looked cool.
I visited the Bronx Zoo last May when I graduated from undergrad. It’s bird world and seabird house were some of the things that got me on the “need birds” grind for this forum. They were possibly some of my favorite places in the zoo, which made me more sad the game had such terrible bird representation. :/So fun fact about Rio! Those are two of my favorite exhibits! I am planning a Bronx recreation down the line and needless to say, it's quite a challenge with such lack of avian representatives.I visited the Bronx Zoo last May when I graduated from undergrad.
