The unavoidable poll: PvP vs PvE!

What is more important for you: PvE or PvP?

  • PvE

    Votes: 609 83.3%
  • PvP

    Votes: 122 16.7%

  • Total voters
    731
  • Poll closed .
I think the question was quite clear: which playstyle do we prefer. Surely you can't be undecided on that?

I, for example, picked PvE. This doesn't mean that I don't do PvP, but in this kind of poll that's irrelevant. Because, well... I do prefer PvE, that's all.

Yup, that was the intended question.

Well, it's like polling the general public about their religious beliefs or political standpoints, they either have no idea what they're talking about, or they rip each other to shreds.

Humans are designed for conflict, what can I say.

Not all of us. But then again I am a Martian. And there's a Banana around here somewhere.

Not 90% of the population - 90% of those who chose to vote on a poll (open to all forum members, not just owners of the game) on the official forums (that have a rather small membership in comparison to the number of game sales) and hasn't been advertised to all forum members.

Also, not all of the visitors to this thread have voted.

You're right, but;

It's the votes that count, not the non-voters not voting.

Plus a small caveat that, these forums represent the front-of-house portal for all things about the game, an interface for the ED developers and designers to gain insight by listening to those that voice their opinion.

So as much, or as little as this poll suggests 90% prefer the PvE aspect, all feedback in the 2.1 feedback page represents as equal representation of bugs / needs / wants / desires / feedback as this poll itself does.

I guess in short, this poll represents as much a voice of the playerbase as the feedback about 2.1 does. If it was even close you could argue the swing... but ~90% is inarguable.

(bit like conservatives getting in on a 90% majority due to 80% of the country not voting) [squeeeee]

Not at all, you can pray to who ever you want and vote for who ever you choose and will get not negative judgement from me (ok there are exceptions on the latter) just so long as you do not ram it down my throat and try and convert me.... as it aint gonna work - actually...... its not a bad analogy you chose tbh.

Not really true if this "data" should then be used for making a decision on what to focus on. Or be used to support some later argument on this forum: "Hey! Look what this poll showed!"

I think we're pretty safe here... if fdev was in the habit of basing design decisions on poll results ED would be a very different beast today. :)

What if there was a "both" option and it turned out 90% voted for that with only 9% towards "PvE" and 1% towards PvP? Not saying this would be the actual numbers though. Just brining up the problem of phrasing a poll like this...or using statistics in general for that matter. ;)

Which why it would have been better worded to mention that people in the middle shouldn't vote either way. However for the sake of argument... even considering the most extreme case where DBOBE had a brain fart and started running his company based on the results of this poll it still shows interest in PvP so that side wouldn't be abandoned... it would just shift the focus somewhat. However the most this poll's likely to achieve is to give PvE forum warriors like me more ammunition in the "more people like this or that" argument, which the other side will continue to ignore and claim "polls mean nothing" (Which is, oddly, the same thing politicians say when the polls are against them despite political parties spending millions on polling) or "forum polls are only representative of forum users, not game players" (because apparently only PvEers answer polls and use forums).

You are of course absolutely right, Tinman. By omitting the "both" option, the results are skewed. And I wouldn't think the results of this limited poll by themselves should be used as a base to judge exactly how much development time should be distributed among new features for PvE and PvP. I think the result shows for which of these two "axiomatic" playstyles - PvE and PvP - more people think it has a higher priority - just not by what margin (the people who would vote "both" wouldn't affect the direct relationship between just PvP and PvE voters)

A poll with the "both" option added would show the same thing by looking at the extremes and seeing which extreme was higher and it would create a better overall picture so people don't misinterpret the "results". Even better would be to have a "sliding scale" where people could pick an option between 1-10.

These kind of polls only create misunderstandings.

Case in point:

Explains some of the outrage when PvE is nerfed to balance PvP.. 90% of the population lose out. Food for thought.

Also...just to be clear. I'm not in the slightest worried that FD would change their dev plan due to this poll. ;)

Where is the 'both equally important' option? I would probably have voted for that - instead I voted for PvP, which to me is more exciting/less repetitive.

Because the question was what is more important to you, not what is more important to the game.
That question is just being projected into the poll by a number of posters, the OP never asked that.
You said you voted for PvP, and you even gave a reason. Good. Wasn't that hard, was it ?
Surely people can pick one of 2 things when asked. The ones who simply feel it's 50/50 for them can abstain.
I'm sure there'll be a poll for them, which they feel like voting in, another time.
This poll asks a simple question. It's not loaded and has no particular agenda. It merely gauges the opinion of its participants.
Let's not overthink everything.

Sure, but as discussed earlier there's not been any evidence put to suggest that the population of the forum isn't generally representative of the population of players. You also have to discount players who own multiple accounts, because you're measuring opinions rather than purchasing power.

Also, not all of the visitors to this thread have voted.

As discussed, the OP intended only to measure & compare those with a strong preference. Those with a middle view aren't relevant to the poll.

It's like a poll asking if more people have green eyes or brown eyes. Sure some people have blue eyes or no eyes or black eyes... but that's not what the pollster was asking about. They only want to compare green to brown. The ONLY reason in this case to ask about others is to avoid having to explain over and over why you didn't ask about them, and then quietly discard the irrelevant information later.

Aye it's exactly that-

90% is way way way too prominent than for it to be just a fluke.. ED priority should be on PvE, and really quite rightly so by the looks of it.

Interesting poll OP.. never expected it to be such a margin

The thing is people who want both PvE and PvP did not vote.. and that would be quite a number of people, including me.

Glad you were able to pick one. I wasn't able to.

This is such a loaded and pointless poll. Any good multiplayer game has both, obviously.

Well it's not, it shows a swing of ~90% of the vocal player base disregarding PvP as the reason they play.

It could just have easily been the other way, which was more in line with my presumption. How pleasantly surprising though. [up]

The result doesn't surprise me, only the extent of the result. It's in line with every similar poll that's been run over the last 2+ years, though they only showed that PvEers outnumbered PvPers by 2-3 times, not the 9 times shown here so far. So either the PvPers are all asleep or have left the forum and only post on reddit now... or PvEers are joining up much faster than PvPers. It also parallels the in-game experience... it's never hard.to find people in mobius (home of the PvEer), but PvPers regularly bemoan the lack of "targets" in open (then deny it when that's brought up by PvEers. :p ).

As a longtime eve player myself i find it find your stance a bit odd.
If i ever knew a game that relies heavily on player coorporation, both in PvP AND PvE, it's eve. Even more important, both depend on each other.
Indiscriminitly caving each others heads in doesn't make a multiplayer game.
Both, PvE and PvP, should ideally be viable options with a purpose.

Me to. As a 7 year EvE player "retired" for 3 years I'd have to say in that game substantially more players did PVE. Even the PVPer's PVE to fund their PVP. Those super capitals take months of grinding to afford and outfit. Most of the player conflicts involve players conquering the best PVE areas, so they can PVE or rent it out to PVErs. PVP is a consequence of the desire to PVE... Mission runners and PVErs love to buy rare stuff from PVPers who PVE in 0.0...

Like most MMOs Elite is a PVE game where you can PVP if you wish. Even in Elite PVE is the driving force behind PVP. How long would it take to earn those credits and rep without shooting a few rats and grinding a few missions? Probably years if this was a PVP only game. Even the Elite rankings are PVE ranks. Right now in Elite, there's really no reason to PVP unless you want to gank or grief people for lolz, or you enjoy a duel.

wrong question, multiplayer / pvp or PvE.

Everyone thinks PvP is killing other players. it's only one part of the Multiplayer game that we could have.

I think it's the product of PvPers dirtying their own pond. If they hadn't chased vast swathes of players into Mobius.. The poll may have looked greatly different. Perhaps that 2-3 times is of days long passed. This poll suggests that PvPers really did over-do the nasty in OPEN, and now folks avoid PvP like the plague.

For once I agree with you, Twittle. This is just another self-affirming and loaded thread in an attempt to show FD that they don't need to put much development into pvp, whereas all it shows is that most pvp'ers no longer engage in open v solo discussion here because it's like flogging a dead horse.

Killing other players is the only form of direct PvP that can only be done through OPEN.

Doing PvE to undermine a player aligned faction is still PVE [woah] - at least in it's raw sense, as you dont actively have to shoot anyone. But I'd be happier labeling it as 'indirect' PVP :)

hang on.. there are NO player factions in the game.. there are only ai factions which players align to, a few of which players have named. ergo this is all PvE content.
