Maybe it feels different than combat in the main game, but for good reason, IMHO. I have had my fair share of combat in the main game - normally in CZ or Res sites, but occasionally against other players, too - and I think the fighting in CQC is much more exciting and exhilarating. After playing CQC enough to reach the rank of "champion", returning to combat in the main game feels slow and sluggish, mainly depending on ship loadouts - hence all the complaining about overpowered modifications in "The Engineers" - and not at all on skill. Wouldn't PvP interested people be more interested in testing their skill than just showing of their modules?

CQC has too low of a skill ceiling for me to invest in, it normalizes not stats but player skill to a degree with its aim assist and power up.

Saying a person is skilled in CQC is equivalent to saying said individual has memorized the location of the power ups and won't engage unless said individual has an upper hand in the engagement, let it be produced by power up or coming up from behind.

I don't know, does that sound familiar to something?

Because it's too casual, with power ups camping, dumbing down the aiming skill. Played enough FPS (ones that don't have aim bot right there for everyone to use and power up that make situations unrealistic)

It doesn't focus on fighting as much as power up chasing.

I'm not surprised it's not embraced by more people.

Well, that too.

Powerup chasing in Arena = bad. Powerup chasing (engineers) in Elite: Dangerous = good? At least in Arena there is no grind for your powerups :D

You are exactly right here. As you mentioned earlier mathematics (and I'll asume statistics in particular) is not your strong point so it's only fair that I explain. In statistics it's assumed that any sample randomly drawn from a population is representative, until a claim to the contrary is made and supporting evidence is supplied.

So, we have a sample size that is far in excess of that required for 99% reliability (something else of which you may not be aware is that the vast majority of polls strive only for 95%. If we went with that less conservative figure the argument would be even stronger), a reliably repeating result across a large number of polls over several years, and no reason to think that the sample is NOT representative of the population. The statistics clearly support the notion that PvE-ers outnumber PvPers in the game context by a degree of 2 to 3 times.

Your claim has often been that the sample is NOT representative (in fact I even questioned the relative representative degrees of the forum vs reddit... to which you ascribed all sorts of actions that weren't reflected in reality). If you still believe that to be the case I'd be very interested to see your evidence, and I'm sure that as an up and coming lawyer you're familiar with the difference between evidence and assertion.

But you are repeatedly polling a population the community manager admits to be PvE heavy, how can that be a reliability of anything without taking into account the psychological preference of using this forum and be in this environment. I think it's a haphazard argument to make that because you have the same result on the this forum over and over that it is representative of the-game population when there is no criteria that limits the participants to have purchased and played the game.

You are operating under the assumption that PvPer and PvEer have equivalent incentive to visit and use this forum, but that psychological claim itself doesn't seem solid whatsoever.

If FD ever makes ED a game that has balanced PvP, i might be interested in it... but then it wouldn't really be ED anymore i think. Until then, PvE all the way. For my PvP kicks ill play TF2 or CQC.

Join the PvP League, nothing much unbalanced there.

I think we can safely say that this forum is NOT representative of the community as a whole because lets face it if the results of this poll were correct there would be an outcry here about the sad state of PvP in open and there haven't been any complaints so there...

Indeed, considering how much "I got griefed" threads fly around, I'm not surprised.

Powerup chasing in Arena = bad.

Because it's built in with no option of turning it off.

Player can very much make an agreement to not use modification. Also, there isn't something that can restore one's shield suddenly by 110% or boost one's weapon damage suddenly by 50%. There aren't re-spawning power ups drifting in battle, if there are, people would be running for them.

I am sorry, but it sounds like you didn't really give CQC a chance long enough to make such a statement. I know a player who performs ridiculous roll / yaw combinations with his beam laser Eagle, owning the arena with this quite difficult manoeuvre without relying on power ups. Sure, the power ups help, but the increased speed and agility of the fighters makes flying skills equally important.

Now you're just arguing semantics. You can't turn off Engineers in the main game.

Player can very much make an agreement to not use modification.

Players can agree not to use powerups? Maybe in some kind of "league play" or Private Groups. Open is open for all and everything, remember?

Again, you're just arguing semantics again. Engineer powerups are just as gimmicky as Arena powerups, just a different flavor.

This forum being PvE heavy is not an argument for or against it being representative of the player base.

I would still be interested to hear arguments as to why it might not be representative.

I personally bought the game (recently) to play it as a single player game. I had heard about ED when it was in beta, but I incorrectly thought it was only a pvp game, so I didn't think about again until I saw an article somewhere that talked about its solo mode. Turns out that ED is a pretty awesome single player space game.

I think it was really smart of Frontier to make ED as three games in one: Single Player, Semi-Private Multi-Player, and PvP Gankbox. Had they just made the gankbox, they would have artificially limited their target audience by a huge margin; FFA pvp is a niche market.

Now you're just arguing semantics. You can't turn off Engineers in the main game.

I'm not, think about it, whenever you engage in combat, you have to deal with power ups, that are sudden, respawning and temporal, it throws everything off. Whereas organized league like the PvP League can avoid the thing entirely. You can't even create private match in CQC.

Yea, like that private match setting?

No, not at all, it's a permanent change instead of temporal and haphazard.

How often do you see in the main game a person's shield suddenly goes up to full from being down?

How often do you find their damage output suddenly increases by 50%?

How often do you find them speeding up to 100% more of their original maximum speed?

How often do you find them Silent Running with shields on?

I don't know how much time you actually spend in CQC and main game PvP, but you don't seem to know what you're talking about.

This forum being PvE heavy is not an argument for or against it being representative of the player base.

Precisely, which is why there is no correlation between forum being representative or unrepresentative.

I would still be interested to hear arguments as to why it might not be representative.

There is none, at least no empirical ones, and I am certainly not putting forth any, it's the ambiguity that people refuse to accept that FD doesn't want us to know.

The thing is people who want both PvE and PvP did not vote.. and that would be quite a number of people, including me.

I want both too. But I prefer PvE in the current game setup. I am pretty sure most of the voters understood this. One option does not exclude other, as being said it's just about personal preference.

Glad you were able to pick one. I wasn't able to.

It was quite easy actually. I just thought about how many time I am spending in PvE versus PvP, and... answer was right there :)

It appears our argument is that you feel Engineers is not powerups, and I do, fair enough. For the record I don't PvP, but that doesn't mean that I don't follow the topic. Ad Hominem CMDR, tisk tisk :D

Ad Hominem

Strawman.

Ad Hominem would be me attacking your competency as a person and your ability to reason, I am questioning your credential on the topic you discuss.

Modification and power up are two different story, the former is permanent, the latter is temporal.

Purely PvE at the moment.
Although I can imagine even engaging some pvp myself in the future, when having enough credits and being in the proper setting like cz's, powerplay, minor faction (bgs) reasons and such.
Don't have issues with 'forced' pvp either, IF there's a reasonable role playing argument for it.
And yes, I know, 'reasonable' is highly personal subject. Not for this thread to discuss ;)

Fang is one of my favourite posters. Respectful, polite and way too smart to be a student :)

I happen to play at the opposite end to him/her but at least I have never combat logged.

Actually I'm mostly a pve'er.

The former games were all PVE, no one can object that.
I do believe that pvp and pve should exist.

But the game stands on a wrong architecture.
Why do i have to select solo? Or Private? Or Open to play the game?
Why is this have to be this way?

Why cant i select my side from the functions menu, like selecting my faction which i want to fight for?

If im willing to fight, i could do it without restarting the game.
If i'm not willing to fight i could change the game from the same option to pve, so that no one could interact with me!

The game has things to be fixed.
Afterwards there will be no problems at all.

BTW, there are some guys on the game/open mode smashing small ships outside the stations.
Please try to understand that its harder for newcomers guys/ using small ships to upgrade their ships if you kill them this way.
And its just a loser way for pvp' ing at all! Such a shameful action to kill the one who cant even take action against you.
Especially i see them in Kamadhenu nowadays, FDL's.. No thats not pvp, let the smaller ships alone and get better ships so that you get better and joyful future pvp's.

Thats all from me, voted for both.

To be honest, the forums here are quite a melding pot. According to some moderators, it's hell on earth when things break out. ;)

A lot of the PvP population here either: doesn't post and lurks, posts and gets glomped by a bunch of PvE based posts, posts threads that are knowingly going to get a rise out of people, or is just PvE vs PvP / PvP vs PvE jabbing.

Perhaps the issue is that a lot of the PvE crowd reserve their PvP for forums :D:

Or (for equality)

Perhaps the PvP crowd continue their in game attitude in the forums :p

Pun was intended

I don't know how much time you actually spend in CQC and main game PvP, but you don't seem to know what you're talking about.

If you would have left that last part out, I wouldn't have brought it up.

Anywho, Engineer mods do add extra abilities (often gimmicky) to the established game mechanics, just like powerups. I never argued that they were temporal.

Jenner

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
Demanding 'credentials' and accusing others of ad-hominem attacks..... what's goin' on in here?!? C'mon guys... you know this is the kind of stuff that sets a mod's eye twitching. Play nice, guys. Everyone can post their opinions. If someone is breaking forum rules then just report it.

Thanks. (goes to get a stiff drink).

Eh? This is all in good fun, friend. Nothing to Moderate here! [up]

Ad Hominem is attacking the debater instead of the argument.

And your argument isn't basing itself on thorough experience with the subject of discussion which I'm trying to explain to you why you are not seeing part of your argument being inconsistent with what exists in game and how it functions mechanically.

Except that there is trade off, which means it's not pure power up but modification. Which is why there is a distinction.

It's okay Jenner, Jypson and I won't devolve the argument into something that needs moderating.
