The Vive discussion Thread

Being a total newborn at this VR thingy, I have a few questions.
I have a Titan X card which drives a 4K monitor and a 2560x1600 one too. Do you think it'll be able to run the vice also?
I'm seeing some posts about direct mode or something like it. Now FD have delayed 2.1 and other patches until May, how good do people think ED will be as it is now on the vive.

Sorry for the newbie questions, but hoping some of you VR gurus can help

Titan X? Horizons VR needs to have a GeForce 980, so I think you'll be OK. Vive and Rift CV1 both have the same resolution and 90hz refresh rate, so I'd expect them to have the same kind of graphical performance. Both specify GeForce 970 for their supported VR titles, which is a bit below Elite's requirements.

Sorry man, no nope no and no...

Got to get yourself a real card!

Jk.

...

Of course the card will be fine. But then again it does depend on FD to optimize their code enough so that the cards can reach 90FPS. If you can run the game in 4K at 90+ fps, then there will be no issues whatsoever.

I, on the other hand, will need to ditch the poor r9-290 for something better this summer when the next gen cards come out.

About tripods.

If the tripods you are buying is intended for a DSLR you should probably be fine. Vibratons can ruin a photo (the reason for using a tripod in the first place) even so much that "mirror shake" can be an issue. If the tripod is prone to vibrations it'll likely get poor reviews, so check those. Also look for a tripod with a hook at the bottom of the central column, keep the column close to its lowest position and hang something heavy from the hook for extra stability.

I agree some tripods are for studio lighting and might not be as vibration proof as a camera mount.

I also agree.

The tripods I have ordered are for studio lighting and has meant I could get a pair for much cheaper than the ones designed to hold a camera.

This is one of those things where you have to purchase depending on your budget and the environment. For my living room where I plan to place them vibrations are unlikely to cause much (if any) issue.
However, if I had been using this upstairs, or on floorboards, vibrations will be much larger.

We still do not actually know how much vibration is required before it actually causes any real noticable problems within VR. (My guess is two lighthouses should help to reduce the effect, except where one is occluded).

I doubt any vibrations from being on a floor will be an issue - it'll likely not be significant - if it is, you really need to think about getting a structural engineer to look at your floors! I'd expect any positional wobble to be smoothed out by the software/hardware, as it's not exactly an exact measurement method anyway.

I read today that the pre-order units have sold out /:

Nope, pre order page still accepting orders.

Unless you mean ones they have ready to ship... if so, then the same happened with the Rift, delivery dates pushed back within minutes of the pre order opening.

ah yes, people talking about mounting the what's name's (what are they called?) do you put them in the furthest corners of your room or the corners of the actual area you can move about in?

Hi all,

The tripods and ball sockets I ordered arrived today.

I can confirm the tripods use the standard 1/4" camera connection and had a perfect fit to those ball sockets.
Also, the tripods will definately be able to support the lighthouses and still remain quite sturdy.

For others who are thinking about a tripod solution I recommend that you consider these.

Lighthouses?

Can you see the lighthouse lasers shining on things in the dark?

I'm curious to know.

I have a medium size room, with a desk and other obstacles around the periphery of my play area. If I could see where the lasers hit things, it would help position the base stations to maximise the coverage and avoid any potential shadow spots.

100% not.
