The Vive discussion Thread

I have a single 980ti and not noticing any poor performance, maybe a small hiccup or stutter on occasion when something happen in the background making cpu usage spike (I only have an i5).

Also. A question I upgraded my nvidia drivers last night and now I get occasional blue "twinkling" lines at the edges of both displays, it's only passing and I only see it with ED.
Anyone else notice this ?

Yes, you can "fix" it by adjusting the fov a bit with the two wheels left and right on the vive (the headstrap is on it, you can pull them out and rotate them to increase / decrease fov). I prefer a slight lesser fov instead of the twinkling

I have the same issue, though I noly see the twinking in Elite. Not other games. I saw a few posts others saw it as well. Driver bug most likely. I didn't roll back to the previous driver though. I'll deal with it.. maybe fixed in next driver release(?).

It's been around for the last two patch cycles at least. The latest patch didn't fix it. Neither NVIDIA nor Frontier are acknowledging the problem. I expect they are both just waiting for the other to do something about it. The usual crap. I haven't logged into Elite with my Vive on for weeks now.

Maybe the game will work properly in a year or two.

When the new drivers this week didn't help, might have even compounded the matter. I grabbed the latest copy of DDU (display driver uninstaller) and installed the 364.72 set of drivers

And:
http://www.geforce.co.uk/drivers/results/100992

No more twinkling in the edges. Even the display mirror is black where it should be.
Granted this might not be an option with 10xx owners but for us on 9x0 this is the no brain solution.

Is this just for the Vive ? Are we talking aliasing here ? Any screenshot comparisons ?

Yes It was discussed here.
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/267053-GTX-1080-Vive-Garbage-Edges-of-Screen
I of course don't have a 1080 but this was pretty much the same with the new drivers on my 980ti.

I don't always update my drivers since if I don't need to you shouldn't have to.

I updated my drivers the day after I got the vive and had wierd blueish twinkling in the edges of my fov.
And I didn't have them the day before.

Figured I could wait and see if this week's drivers would help but no.
Since I don't need any of the 10x0 driver support I can downgrade to an earlier driver set.

Granted haven't tried the vive much lately since my rift arrived yesterday so have been playing around with that ;)

Thanks, this is helpful. I recently reinstalled windows so I didn't have access to a rollback this time.

Is this the latest driver that doesn't cause the glitch?

So I have played ED on the vive. My verdict: terrible. Not playable. The map is completely unusable. Considering that navigation and exploration underpin the entire game this basically renders elite dangerous as unplayable on the vive.

Anyone had same experience? Is there a fix?

I've read elsewhere that im not the only one. Should have got an oculus.

Unsure.
I dont know what driver I upgraded from the first time but it had been a few weeks.

This set of drivers was mentioned by someone in another thread so I just figured why not.

While I'm really happy I got the HTC Vive and not the Oculus Rift, I do agree the Galaxy Map navigation is terrible. Your mouse pointer simply isn't over what it looks like it's over. I tend to have to search for the system, enter the name and then click the button to plot the navigation course while the star is selected. There's not much more one can do in the Galaxy Map at the moment though.

You need to set up your HOTAS to be usable in the galaxy map screen. I have it set up just fine and can navigate perfectly. The stick controls my viewing angle and the rotation, and the two hat switches on my throttle control panning, zooming, and elevation. Don't use the mouse unless you're selecting stuff on the panel on the left. If you don't have a HOTAS, you should get one because I don't even see the point of playing this game with a VR headset without one plus navigating the galaxy map would be basically impossible. You would have to set up your keyboard to allow you to move around.
Also, to the guy that said he should have gone with the rift: The only thing that would have changed is that you would have made that post in the Rift topic instead of the Vive one. The galaxy map behaves the same in it too.

There is a workaround for the Galaxy Map. You need to be specific with what problems you have with the map, because I can't quite remember what I did to make it workable. The good news is, the Galaxy Map is actually one of the better things about VR once you get used to it. It's actually quite beautiful, despite being clunky sometimes.

It may be that you're not using the mouse effectively to navigate. I have my mouse on the right of my joystick. I use the mouse + my keypad (I don't own a HOTAS) in order to use WASD + mouse movement/buttons to navigate the GM.

Edit: found my old reddit post on the subject:

1) Remapped UI functions to: LEFT/RIGHT Q/E (from A/D); TABLEFT/RIGHT A/D (from Q/E). This means some adjustment when operating the in-ship panels, but makes Galaxy/Star map much more intuitive.
2) Use mouse pan/zoom/rotate as you suggested, and WASD for forward/backwards strafe left/right (feels much more intuitive this way for experienced WASD users), and Q/E for moving UI left/right to select 'route' etc on the individual star systems.

Some of this may no longer be necessary as they fixed one of the bugs that was causing me to have to remap one of the functions.

As for Vive vs Rift, the Rift is better for seated experiences like ED as it is more lightweight. It's also currently got better support in ED but that's not a long-term plus.

My main problem is that I cannot read the contents of the damn map. My eyesight is fine, its just so low resolution. I do use HOTAS but didn't try using their controls for map maybe give that a go but if I cannot see the map detail not really sure how that will help

I'm not sure what you mean by map detail. What specific things are you trying to read?

I have a map issue as well. The details are far too close and large compared to my position in my cockpit. It goes from being centered correctly in the cockpit, to this giant Galaxy Map UI where the text box on the left looks gigantic and too close. So much that I have to look to the left to read it, and to be properly in front of the text box I would need to stand up and strafe left. The game menu when you first launch the game is the same way. It's not a positioning error on my part. To fix the problem it would need to be smaller and closer to the center. This giant game menu thing is annoying and certainly doesn't have anything to do with graphical horsepower.

Accurate to 0.3mm, pretty astounding really when you think about it.

Possible new vive out by the end of the year with improved ergonomics and internals.

If true imo it confirms HTC felt they had to get a vr hmd out beating rift to the punch even if it meant it being a bit of a dev kit.

Again if true imo it's great for vr but a bit of a kick in the nuts for v1 owners unless they get a very good sweetner out if it.

How do early vive adopters feel about it?
