The Voiceattack Discussion Thread

I wonder if the devs would consider doing a deal with the guys at VA to make it a part of the released game?

I think that is highly unlikely. I've written why I think so in a different thread. I really love VA and don't want to play the game without it anymore, but it really doesn't make sense for Frontier to ever integrate a licensed version of VA.

It may also be of some help that VA recognises phonetic spelling too which is useful if you have an accent. So you can enter commands like this;

When I say: Shields;Sheeelds
or
When I say:Landing gear;Landing Geer;Landing Gia

Remember, VA is listening not for what you say, but how you say it, so if you examine how you actually say different phrases phonetically you can improve VA's hit rate at understanding you. It really worked for me.

Hope that helps :)

Also in the voice attack settings you can set how hard VA tries to associate what you say with one of your commands. I don't remember what that option is called and I'm posting on Android right now, but it takes a number value between 0 (or 1?) and 100. On highest setting va will always try to execute the closest command to what you said. So if you have a voice attack profile that only has the two commands "shields" and "weapons" and you set that option to 100 it will likely execute the shields command even if you say something like "shining" and the weapons command if you say something like "weather". On 1 or 0 on the other hand what you say has to be recognized precisely. In most cases the middle is OK, but if you know that there is little background noise that could be misunderstood and you are the only person in the room using a headset you might set it higher, so that if the underlying windows speech recognition engine misunderstands you voice Attack will still pick the correct command.

Edit: Also remember, that you can use the windows features to input new words. If you do not VA will have trouble identifying words like "hyperspace". If above mentioned option is set high enough it might still work, because you say "hyperspace" and windows recognises something like "hyperbole" and reports that to voice attack, but because there is no "hyperbole" command in your profile va will interpret it correctly, considering it to be close enough to hyperspace. If you make sure that windows speech recognition knows the words however, your going to be a bit more on the safer side.

Macho Voice Attack

Hi all

Voice Attack is great, but what phrases do you all use? Are you a traditionalist and go for ordinary phrases, or do you do things with style and macho things up?

For a laugh I yelled 'Combat Mode!' when interdicted, but the only interception I got was from my wife with a withering stare.

I lost a great many man points that day.....

Use phrases from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

"It's only a bleedin' rabbit" = full power to weapons.

"Run away! Run away!" = full power to engines.

"I'm invincible!" = full power to systems.

"So, where is this beast?" = silent running.

"All right, we'll call it a draw." = supercruise.

Just curious, as Ive not looked into voice attack yet; is there a key you need to press to enter 'voice command mode'? If not, single word commands could possibly be a problem if those single words are used during a regular conversation with someone sitting next to you!

Otherwise, combinations seem to make more sense, e.g., "Computer, stealth!", as they're far less likely to be used unintentionally.

You can set a key to toggle voice command on and off, so you can talk without VA going ballistic on you:)

You could always try something like 'Danger Will Robinson' when you are under attack and need to activate weapons :D

There's no way you can phrase the things you say to your computer game spaceship that other members of the human race will find normal.

But it could be worse. Just wait till we're issuing orders to our NPC crew :D

Currently I play ED with a headset. I'm using VoiceAttack for some commands. When I'm home alone I would like to hear the sound in my loudspeakers and use a standalone microphone for VoiceAttack. I'm thinking about buying a Samson Go Mic Portable USB Condenser Mic. Anyone has experience with this?
