The Zoolympic Games

If i understood correctly the prompt is to have 3 island habitats ai.
All done, on a scale to 1-10 (1 is meh and 10 is the worse thing seen by human eye 👁) how horrible is it (any score lower than six will be not counted)

I'm considering Shetland Islands for this challenge but Przewalski horses just don't look like convincing replacements for Shetland ponies 🥲
Well it is a sub species so acceptable even if they don't look the same. The shetland ponies just adjusted to their environment over millenia :)

Equus ferus przewalskii instead of Equus ferus caballus (horse and pony)

Nothing like the guests telling you that your one animal island zoo starter is useless despite a 50k loan being paid to build it .. went from 0 guests to 200 guests to 0 guests twice and quotes of 'this zoo is terrible I want my money back'. Guess I am starting over rofl.

Ah, that doesn't help, just noticed the Dhole escaped due to a raised land, low barrier issue rofl, that's why the guests were running away, but only just got the alert of an escape when I went back into the game to get the dholes out before deleting the zoo and starting over rofl.
Rofl .. Take 2 .. made the island too big this time round

Oh dear! Honestly instead of a loan just open a new Franchise with a butterfly walkthrough and fast forward for like, half a century or so (lol). You'll rake in the cash and can then start building with some good buffer behind you!

Yeah I might have to do something like that. The terrain building is eating up way too much cash.
twiddles thumbs while I wait for it to start making money back... currently losing 1k a year with just 1 staff member at year 14 rofl , 2 walkthroughs and an exhibit barely making any money rofl
Nope, the insects in this area clearly do not breed as much as butterflies on the mainland rofl. Back to square one.

Aww loves, sounds like this round is causing some trials and tribulations! Believe in yourselves, I believe in you! 💚 Remember its not just about the finished product...it's about having fun with the process :)

Water is a nightmare to work with so I did anticipate this one being tricky! Major tip: you can use the green grass construction piece to smooth out rough edges between water and paths. It looks great especially with some foliage on it.

I also found that Scaevola Bush makes good island/water bush barrier very realistic to the rainforest islands.

Yes! The buried ghost gum sapling is nice too, gives a soft sage green that really looks like moss, weeds and undergrowth. One of my current faves.

On to Round 6!

Friday 8th November - Monday 18th

(as always, if you need an extension to the deadline it's fine, but post in the group so that we wait to score until you've submitted)

The most popular theme by vote as of today is...

Create an Island Chain inspired by regional island nations or clusters e.g. Japan, Borneo, Hawaii, Iceland etc.

That's fun! I'll set the parameters for this build:

EDITED TO BE FREER AND ALLOW MORE CHOICE
  • Must include at least three islands
  • Must include at least three animal species
  • The animals must be from the islands they live on (but mods and subspecies swaps are allowed, i.e. the red fox can be used to represent the ezo fox for example).
I imagine pathing and zookeeper gates are going to be the trickiest aspects of this build, so have a think about how you're going to manage that before you start! Please do all your landscaping and pathing before you place in the water...take it from me that it's really hard to fix things once you've added water!

We've also got some decisions to make as a group about how scoring is managed going forwards. There was some discussion about this here and here.
Please can you comment in this thread to vote yes/no or add your voice to the discussion?
I will make a final decision and announce it by Monday 18th November before the next round of scoring begins.

1. Yes or No: Increase the scoring to points out of 10
2. Yes or No: Swap 'Realism' with 'Level of Detail' in the scoring categories
3. Yes or No: Remove 'Animal Welfare' from the scoring categories
Are Invasive Species Allowed For This Idea (For Example A Mongoose Habitat For Hawaii)?

That is a cool idea .. it did happen .. I did look for that sort of information for the other island areas to see if there were introduced animals that Planet Zoo had .. but couldn't find much.
I watched a video where they told about introducing mongooses onto an island overrun by snakes, only to find that the the snakes were nocturnal and meant they weren't about when the mongooses were .. so the mongooses ate other animals instead slaps head They ended up having to capture the excess mongooses.

What an epic fail! Why were they trying to get rid of the snakes anyway? They have their own space to belong in the ecosystem. Snakes usually aren't a threat except when people take them by surprise. Bash around with a stick and they'll get out of your way.

Looking it up again, it was Amami Oshima Island and different reports say the snakes were killing the rabbits, or were too venomous for the humans.
