I think it's well known that all posters are equal, but some posters are more equal than others.

Mods moreso, so I completely understand that they're not willing to abuse their position and stay neutral in debates where their opinion would be given more weight. Even TJ's hat-off posts are more in the humour threads

Really? I'm surprised anyone would see it that way. I've never known mod's opinions to carry more or less weight than anyone else's.
